Comments : Very smooth, had to go to another line, took10 minutes, didn't ask any questions, but forgot to give the stamp in the passport so had to go back. Everyone was in good humor and the immigration person even admitted it was his fault. I recommend Atlanta as the POE

Embassy Review : We, like all of you, were very nervous before the interview. We were prepared for anything and everything. We were particularly concerned about our proof of relationship. In our application we sent a three page story with photos rather than tons of IMs, photos, tickets, etc. We were worried that they would ask for more proof and so came prepared (and in the end they didn´t ask for it.)

We arrived in Rio the night before and stayed at a hotel close to the embassy. The next morning we ate breakfast and walked over to the embassy. We were an hour early but it didn't matter, they took us right in. Make sure that you go to the correct gate (not the "general" gate). You won't miss it and they will direct you to the correct one if you do go to the wrong one.

We passed through security. Remember, no phones! There are people outside (clearly identified) ready to hold your phone for you if you need to bring with you. We left ours at the hotel. I was stopped at security because I had some tissues in my front pocket causing a bulge. They asked me to remove them and pass them through the security screen.

We walked straight up stairs and were greeted by the infamous Aléx. He is exactly like everyone says. Very personable, humorous and very detail oriented. He explained what we needed to do and handed us a paper that explained the order our paperwork was to be in. He sat us in the last row at the back. After a few minutes, he called Carine ("sir you stay seated") and she went to him. He asked for her paperwork. He noticed that she forgot the piece of paper that he gave her when we arrived and asked for it. I had filed it by accident in our folder. She found it and handed it to him and he joked with her, "you just arrived and you already lost my paper?!" He made sure everything was correct and sent her back to her seat then continued to greet new arrivals.

Aléx is very aware of what is happening, keeping tabs on everyone within his domain. If you aren't paying attention, he will get your attention and direct you. Do pay attention. Do not deviate from anything Aléx says. He has heard it all and has no patience for it. He is there to help you but he is bound by the Embassy to do exactly as the Embassy requests. There is no negotiating this. If you forget a document (surprising how many did), there is a desktop computer and printer that you are allowed to use if your document is accessible online.

At one point several couples were having hushed conversations. Aléx called out, "People, this is a small room and there are interviews going on. Please remain quiet!"

When it was time, Aléx moved us up one row to prepare us for our document review. The woman called us up and looked over our papers. We had multiple copies of divorce documents, birth certificates, etc. She only needed the papers that were requested on the web site that we were sent by the Embassy in Rio. She reviewed all the documents in our GIANT file sitting at her window. I was amazed at how much information was processed concerning our visa. She stamped some things then told us that we could sit down.

When it was time, Aléx moved us up another row in preparation for our final interview. We watched nervously as people were called up. I was surprised how many women were doing their interview alone. (Guys, come on, don´t leave your ladies to do this process alone).

Our turn came and we were directed to the recessed room to the right. The person greeted us nicely. Carine and I were both nervous. He spoke in Portuguese and made some chit chat to make us comfortable. He asked if I spoke Portuguese and I said I did. He then asked Carine to take an oath to tell the truth. He asked her about her last name as the spelling was not typical. He then asked her how she knew me. He then asked if she spoke English. She said she did and they continued in English. He asked her if she knew where I lived and they talked about this for a minute again making casual chat. Then very unexpectedly he said, "Okay, Congratulations, you are approved. I wish you both a very happy life. Your visa will arrive next week". Then we both just stood there waiting for another question. When it dawned on me what he said, I said, "AWESOME!" We looked at each other, kissed, said "Thank you!" and left.

I think the feeling afterward for both of us was how wound up we were before the interview and how simple it turned out to be. Follow the information requested by the embassy, listen to Aléx and answer a few questions. You should be good to go!
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
