Consulate Review: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : October 6, 2015
Embassy Review : I just had my interview today, so I can finally write my review/statement/opinions here

Medical Exam:
I had my medical with Dr. Garrido, in Rio de Janeiro. To be honest, my first choice was the one in São Paulo, since it is easier for me to go there, but after contacting both of them, I decided to go to RDJ.
It is true: they only like to be contacted through email, so they’ll give you no information through the phone. The positive side is that Tania will send you everything you need to know, and if you forget it you just need to read it over and over again. She sent me the exams I would have to take (X-Ray and Syphilis), and a list of all the vaccines I should take.
If you are thinking on going to RDJ prior to the interview just for the exams I can assure you that a one day trip is time enough - there is no need to sleep there.
Tania is very professional - almost dry - and I say that so people will be ready for it, because it kind of made me nervous that day . Dr. Garrido is very nice, and he made me feel very comfortable. He asked me typical questions, such as if I had had any surgeries, any heart problems, diseases, and so on. He also gave me a copy of the vaccine certificate.

Both the attendants at Laboratório Lâmina and Clínica Cavallieri were very professional. Their labs are very nice and clean. I got to Clínica Cavallieri (X-Ray) a little early, but they did my exams right away.

Oh! And all their offices are right by each other. And they are near two malls, which makes it easy to find a place to eat.

Interview:
As many others, I also decided to come back for the interview (two weeks after the medical). Since I scheduled my appointment for 7:20, I slept at the Hotel Atlântico Business (5 minutes from the Consulate General).
There was a small line of K1 since it wasn’t even opened yet. The entrance we used is the same as the one for tourist visas, but instead on waiting on the first floor, we go straight up to the second floor.

When we got there, Alex explained us what was going to happen - he is the best! He gave us some papers we had to fill and also explained how we had to do it (do not fill it up before his explanation).
After that moment he will call everyone by name, asking if they’re done with the papers. He went through my papers to check if everything was ok, and told me to sit on the first roll because someone was going to call me.
A Brazilian lady (still not the interviewer) went through my documents once again, gave some of them back to me (the unnecessary ones) , and asked me a few questions just to update their system, I guess, (or to check informations) such as birth date, address, Petitioner’s address, mother and father’s name, and if I was employed.
I think I waited 40 minutes until I was called. I was the second on the “list”. The boy before me was there for 10 minutes or so. Like toozler said, they analyze your documents before the interview, and if everything is fine they won’t ask you much.
The nice lady who interview me asked how we met and how he proposed. Then she said I was approved. I didn't have a watch with me, but by 9:00 I was already on my way back to the hotel.

I know everyone gets super nervous - I was no different -, but everyone at the Consulate General is super nice. They are great and they’ll answer your questions in the nicest way possible. If you have all the documents they asked, and meet the minimum requirements for the I-134, everything should be fine. Good luck, anyone who might be reading this. Message me if you need anything

POE Review: Houston
Event Description
Entry Date : 2015-10-28
Embassy Review : I am quite surprised to see that most of the people that entered in Houston have not much to say. In my opinion, although it wasn't that bad, it was worse than the interview process.
When my family and I arrived there was a big line because of all the flights that were arriving. We probably stayed in it for 40 minutes before an Immigration Officer was available for us.
The first part of immigration was pretty ok: the Officer was nice, asked the usual questions you get when entering the US, and some others about my engagement, but all in a friendly manner.
The part I did not like was after that, on the actual immigration room (?). I waited another 40 minutes with Officers that were just laughing between themselves and being very rude to people in the room - although it wasn't directed to me I did not like the way they were acting. I noticed my papers (probably with other K1 and spouses visas) were the last in their stack of papers.
After 30 minutes a guard picked them up and took it to the back room, and called me after a few minutes. He didn't ask any different questions, but it seemed as if he was trying to discourage me about moving to the US and marrying an American, because my culture was way too different. And then he said I had 90 days to get married or runaway (which I thought was funny lol).
The part I hated the most was when I had to hand in that blue slip to the guards (right before entering the connections/check out area). He asked me the same question as the other two officers, which was "When are you getting married?", and I gave him the same answer as before: "Not quite sure. Sometime in between the next two weeks, after I settle and get my marriage license", which hadn't been a problem before, but he decided to give me THE hardest time about it. I answered that because every other time I entered the US, my policy was always not to lie, specially to Immigration Officers.
Anyhow, if I could say something about that, it would be: just have a date (even if it isn't the one you intend on) to answer everyone.

Thank God it is over

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
