Consulate Review: Sydney, Australia
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : April 3, 2014
Embassy Review : Firstly if you're like me and from the country, don't be too overwhelmed by Sydney. I had to ask around on the forums here as to what to expect but you can really 'miss' the MLC building. It's also only a small walk from Martin Place if you want somewhere to wander to stretch your legs.

My day for the interview began at 3:00am. Being from a rural town, 2 hours (drive) from Sydney I had to be up early to catch the train in. My dad accompanied me for the day so we caught the train at 4:10am. We arrived in central at 7:20am. My interview wasn't until 10:45am but the second train into Sydney was too late and driving there is only for the experienced. :P

We killed time until around 9:30am where we wandered up to the Lobby of the MLC centre (Which is actually level 8). We sat until about 10:10am then took the lifts up, followed the signs and left dad at the waiting area as I passed through security. FYI, if someone comes with you, left them stay at the lobby, the chairs are apparently so much more comfortable than the white chairs on level 10. As others have said, go to the toilet as well before you go, kids and all. No toilets on level 59.

Security was fine. Belt off, sunglasses off head, phone off. I didn't have a bottle of water with me but others have said they will ask you to take a sip. They kept my phone an sunglasses and gave me a laminated slip to collect my items when I was done.

I waited to take the lift. She even pressed the button for me :P for level 59. Take a deep breath 'cos that lift goes like a bull at a gate. My ears popped a few times. The door at reception on level 59 is heavy; muscles!

Interview was quick and painless really. I had nothing to really be stressed about after all. I took my number and took a seat. I got called up to window 4 first and handed over my passport, passport photo and CGI Federal payment receipt. She collected everything and told me to take a seat. She called me back up a few minutes later and took my fingerprints. She said the interviewer will be with me momentarily so I took a seat again and waited.
I was slightly hoping I didn't get the lady at window 3, she may have been having a hard time with the person she was interviewing there. The poor man was getting questions left right and centre.

Eventually was called up for my interview. Window 7 where a lovely lady made my day even easier. She swore me in and asked me the general questions:-
Fiance's Name:
How did we meet: She chuckled a little when I said World of Warcraft. :D
When did we first meet in person:
How many times I've visited him:
Has he been here:
What do we have in common: You know, you get so used to this everyday of speaking to your fiance, that it takes you back a little. But I answered truthfully... so when I said we are both a bit of a thrill seeker and love amusements parks, then one day want to go skydiving, her face was PRICELESS! She said "Yeah... that's not for me!" I said "Yes definitely not for everyone. Even I only want to give it a go once."
Is this your first marriages: I felt like this was a trick question, since she knew the answer. It was my first marriage but my fiance is divorced. But I answered truthfully. She didn't ask any follow up questions regarding his divorce so that was nice.

I think that was about it. And she said congratulations and thanks for being so organised. Such an easy experience. My stomach was in a knot the whole day and it didn't need to be. I know I read a LOT of reviews where it says to just relax and I figured people were just saying that. But seriously, just relax, and you should be fine!

PS- if you took the train in and want a good feed for lunch afterwards, head to The George Hotel. It's a pub yes, but we had lunch there. Very cheap and generous meal size. Was de-lish!

Best of luck to all in their travels and journey to the US.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
