Does my joint sponsor (Form I-864) need to keep working after I receive the 2-year green card?

Hi guys,

I am a new member here at VisaJourney. However I have been reading the forum since the beginning of 2015. I am an F1 student. I married to my husband on January, 2015 after 3 years of dating. We filed our AOS in May. I already received my EAD and we gonna have our interview this coming September.

When we filed our I-864 Affidavit of Support, we had to have a joint sponsor because my husband is a student and he doesn't make enough. Everthing is great except my joint sponsor (my mother-in-law) is thinking about going back to school full time (and quit working) in about 1 year. She wants to change her career and I don't want to become the reason for her to not be able to do so.

So my concern is: Does my joint-sponsor on Form I-864 need to keep working to meet the minimum income requirement even after I am approved? (She is willing to sponsor me no matter what). If she quits, will this affect my future application for remove conditions in 2 years?

If she is not allowed to quit working, is it too late to change my joint-sponsor/ add a second joint-sponsor, how can I do so, and should I do that at all (we gonna have our interview in mid September, in less than 3 weeks)?

Thank you so much for your help. I can't seem to find this information anywhere else so I am really confused at the moment.

She will be fine. You need the sponsorship at the time of your application but after approval there is no minimum the sponsor has to make. :)

Dear Cheezees,

Thank you for the quick response. I feel much better now. I was so stress out about it.

If she quits next year (after I receive the 2 year green card), it should not affect my application for the 10 year green card, is that right? (I haven't look into that process yet)

That is right. In fact, the sponsor has nothing to do with the I-751 ROC process. And after you get citizenship - sponsor who? Good luck!
