Embassy Interview Question: South Africa

Hello all,

The NVC recently sent the approved K1 petition information to the U.S. Consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am hopeful my fiance' will soon receive packet three. I have a question. She lives in Cape Town. Will she need to travel to Johannesburg for the interview, or might she be able have it in Cape Town? Joburg is fine, but Cape Town is more efficient and doesn't require a flight and hotel room.

Anyone dealt with the SA consulates?

We are going through the Johannesburg consulate too and also live in Cape Town. I have heard that South Africa is a great consulate to go through, but so far, we have not had such great luck. First, we were told we will need to go to Johannesburg as they do not process K-1s in Cape Town. Second, we have been waiting for packet 3 for over 3 weeks now, and it still has not arrived. After speaking with three different case workers,as our case worker was away in the states, the consulate said they mail all packets through South African Post, and are not responsible for any missing mail. However, you can have packet 3 picked up by a representative or a courier service. The first thing I recommend is that you call the following number for the consulate +27 0116448000 and press 0 to speak to a live person, they will ask for your last name, as cases are distributed alphabetically, and find out if they have your case and when packet 3 will be or was sent. Once it has been sent, give it a week. If it does not arrive, I definitely recommend a courier service. I am very lucky to be studying at this time in Cape Town so I can be with my fiance and daughter to work through all this red tape. I wish you luck on your journey, and we will keep you updated on our case.

Thanks so much for your thorough reply. Once again I'm ressured by a kind soul on VJ.

I just received the letter from NVC here in the states yesterday. Thus, I'm assuming they'll get it at the consulate in Joburg in a week or so, and then another week or so before it's sent to my fiance'. Your timeline and ours is remarkably close. We've waited quite some time now, another few weeks for the next phase to get started shouldn't be too bad. I would like to stay in contact and offer mutual support/brainstorming/information sharing/etc. if possible.

Hey there,

I am also going through the Joburg craziness at the moment. Our interview is tomorrow. I actually filed as DCF which has sped up the process considerably. As soon as I find out how things go with my guy and his interview I will let you know so you have an idea of what to expect. Wish us luck!!!
