New ATM fee for foreign ATM cards?

 Share

My sister-in-law told my wife they saw on the ATM screen the last time they used our PayPal debit card that a new 150 peso fee for all out of country cards to use the bank ATM in Philippines starting Feb 15.

Has anyone else heard of this new fee?

If it is true I guess we will switch back to Xoom for transfers because it will be about the same cost now to send money.

Thanks!

I went to take out money at an ATM in manila and it said that there was going to be another 150 peso charge, but it never showed up yet. I think it is only with certain bank ATMs. I will draw out money in a couple of days and let you guys know what the deal is. My wife uses my ATM card from Alaska USA (doesnt have a visa symbol on it)....and I used my ATM card from my bank in wyoming (only a cash card...not debit). I think it might have something to do with the foreign VISA cards (as in most ATMs you can only withdraw 5000 pesos at a time....good way for the banks to make extra money with a 150 peso extra charge per transaction). Right now I am only getting charge 1% international transaction fee for ATM withdrawals.

I will let you guys know what I find out.

fees for using a visa card are seperate from using a debit for cash visa international fees for a pos transaction are 3% depending on your bank fees are added to that for example wachovia bank charges 5 % of the foreign transaction and for a bank withdrawl from a foreign atm its 5.00 USD foreign atm fee as far as fees to use a certain Bank ATM I havent encountered any here in Mindanao

I just reviewed my account and it looks like they did add the 150 charge to the withdrawal. Either that or the dollar is down to 44.5 PHP. When I do the conversion using what they withdrew, it come out to close to 46 PHP when I add the new fee.

I guess we need to look for another bank ATM to use or go back to money transfer with Xoom or other company.

Hmm so far I havent been charged the extra. I checked the amount I was charged VS the amount we withdrew (10,000 pesos). I looked at my alaska USA account and i got over 46.5 each time (withdrew on 1 feb and 8 feb). On my other account that i just used my ATM card (not visa debit) I also got 46 withdrawing on the 5th of feb (that's when it hit my account). I will be getting more money this week, so I can let you know my experiences. I think this may have something to do with the VISA logo being on the card for this fee because with my cash cards (ATM only) I can withdraw up to 10,000 at one time....my card with the visa logo I can only withdraw 5000 at one time (found this out last time I was here) As far as the international transaction fee I get charged from my banks, it is 1% of what i take out no matter where in the world i have taken money out.....(I have done this in germany, ireland, philippines, italy this is mostly with my card with the visa logo)

The best I can figure they have charged the new fee the past two times they used the card. The only way I could tell was by adding 150 to the amount they actually withdrew and it comes out close to the current exchange rate.

I guess we need to look for another bank ATM or some other options.

hmmm just checked my bank online....of course it charged it....but here's something interesting. For my cash card (ATM only) I got a lower exchange rate than using my visa debit card...I wonder how that works out? I withdrew 3 times back to back....2 with my cash card and once with my visa....hmm

cash card - 10,000 pesos = $220.17

visa debit - 10,000 pesos = $219.49

this was the pelimenary soft transaction. I know its not that much of a difference, but I figured it would be the same.

xe.com has the exchange rate of 46.3 so the second one would have been pretty close to right. Maybe it was the swapover of time for exchange rates that the bank uses. I'm not going to lose sleep over it though. I will have to see if my other card that my wife holds charges the same or not...im sure it will be all the same though.

I just talked to my wife and she got the notice and was charged P150 at a MetroBank atm. Most atm's in Tacloban are empty on Saturdays (LOL) so she only took what the atm had available then went to BPI. The atm there didn't charge her the fee. I'm guessing that all of the banks aren't online with it just yet. It was implemented on the 15th of this month so I'm sure within a month or so all the banks in the Phils will be charging the fee. Cheap for us here in the US but she sure wasn't happy about it!!

funny thing...yep it was at a metrobank ATM. I will have to try another ATM to see. Might have my wife have to go to a different ATM to draw money out until they are all online with it. there is a BDO right next to her metrobank in baliuag, so it's not an inconvience.
