  1. Thanks everyone for your posts. Should this letter be notarized?

Also, there's another issue. My niece's father is actually in jail awaiting his sentencing. *sigh* What is he is supposed to use as a contact address and phone number?

  2. Hi all,

My sister and her daughter are coming to visit the long weekend in September. I'm a bit concerned about her ability to get across the border with her child and not the father. Anyway, my sister never did marry the father and he is not in the picture. Is this going to be a concern at the border when she tries to enter into the US. Any advice?

  3. There needs to be some simplified guide on how to file US taxes for new residents. I'm so confused with everyone's post.

Hopefully, someone can help me. In 2006, I worked in Canada for the first three months. Entered the US on April 1 with my Green Card. Collected EI from Canada for four months, and then was employed in the states for the last five months. Here's what I'm going to be doing:

    1) Filing a 1040 jointly with my husband.

    2) Submitting 2555 Foreign Income for the income I made in Canada for the first three months, as well as the EI income I received while living in the US.

    3) Submitting 8891 for the RRSPs I cashed out and paid 25% non-resident taxes on.

    4) Submitting a 1116 Foreign Tax Credit for the the taxes I paid to Canada and the 25% non-resident tax I paid when I collected EI and cashed in my RRSPs.

Have I got this done pat? Am I missing anything important?

    Thanks,

    SB

  4. Hey all, I'm hoping someone might be able to provide some experience.

I lived and worked in Canada for the first 3 months last year. After I moved to the US, I collected EI for 4 months.

On my T4E in box 24 is an amount of the 25% non resident tax deducted from any EI benefits which I can report on line 437 of my tax form.

Now I also have a NR4 for cashing in my RRSPs shortly after I left the country. Box 17 on the NR4 has the amount of non-resident tax withheld. I'm not sure what to do with the number in Box 17. Can I also report that on line 437?

I don't think I qualify to do a Section 217 as it says one must be a non-resident of Canada for all of 2006. I was still a resident of Canad from January to the end of March.

    Any insight?

    Thanks.

  5. The point of this thread is the "illegal" word the woman at Honda-Acura brought up. Did I really do something illegal here? Are they going to come and get me..throw me in jail....tow my car away.....make my credit look bad? I have not defaulted on any loan payments and I have returned to Canada to visit almost every 30 days, so my car has never been outside of Canada for more than 30 days at a time. I do plan on paying off the car and soon and I was waiting for them to get back to me after hearing that I have registered my car in the States. I was just trying to put it off for as long as I could...until the "illegal" word came up.

  6. Hey, I'm married to a officer out of Ft. Lewis who is currently deployed to Afghanistan.

I agree that the war in Iraq is illegal...however, I fully support our troops.

I stand by Watada's conviction's, however his conduct is unbecoming of an officer. He joined right after 9/11. Did he really not think that he was going to be deployed to a war zone?? Quite possibly he signed up with an agenda. While I'm not sure what the military is going to do about this one, team-wise he has not set a good example for his peers.

  7. Thanks guys....for all your good wishes. I see that there is now a new crowd of people in here! Seems like after everyone gets established in their new life in the US, they start to slowly disappear. :o)

  8. OKay, I posted this in another topic but it seems as if no one is reading that topic anymore....so here I go again.....

I brought my car over back in April. I'm financing through Honda-Acura Fiance and I am still making payments on it (I only owe $6,000 by now). Well when I brought it over the border, the customs guys asked if I was still making payments on it, I said I was and they still gave me the papers to bring it across. Then I went to the licensing branch and got it registered in Washington. They did send a letter to Honda Acura Finance. Well Honda fiance called my mom's place asking to speak to me.....and they told my mom that it was illegal for me to bring my car to the states??!! Is that true? If it were true why didn't the border guys stop me? Also I can't believe they told such private information to someone other than me. Does anyone know if this is illegal and if I am now a criminal or something?

  9. Hey all....been a while since I popped in but I wanted to let you all know that the interview process is over and I was offered the Epidemiologist position with my county health department. I had to suffer through three panel interviews. I was not expecting such luck after only living in this country for three months. I am so happy and excited right now.

  11. hey all,

I spoke to a few employment cousellors here in the states and they told me in order to be competitive for employment I should submitt the following documents along with my resume and cover letter:

    - photocopies of my degree and certifications

    - letters of recommendations from previous employers

    - samples of my past work

This seems really bizarre to me. Does anyone here agree with submitting all these documents with a resume?

  12. Congrats!!! just curious how long after POE did you go check on your SSN card? cheers

Flames, I went through POE on Saturday the 1st and went directly to the SSA office the following Monday (the 3rd). I'm not gonna take any chances with waiting.

  13. Hey all,

I crossed over with my UHAUL this past Saturday. I had called the border to ask what kind of inventory they wanted and the customs agent on the phone said a list of what is in every box. So i did just that. Going through customs was a breeze....they didn't even check my UHAUL or ask what was in it. I knew I should have packed my wine collection and my plants! Oh well.

On Monday I also went to the SSA office and filed for my SSN. I was told approximately a 4 week wait. For now I will just twiddle my thumbs.

Car is with me and we'll see what happened with this in a few months.

Other than that, I just found out on Friday that I got accepted into graduate school at the University of Washington.

Such a beautiful day here today and I'm glad I have all the free time to enjoy it.

  14. We moved my things down from Canada with a U-Haul truck. My fiance (at the time) drove the truck, and I followed in his car. I had made a list of the items I was bringing with me and took the list in with me when I went into Customs. They took a very brief peek into the truck and looked at my list and that was it.

Did you make an inventory of what was in each box?

Should I list the quanity of items? ex. 25 cookbooks, 12 hand towels

  15. Hey all, I'm packing all my belongings into a UHaul this Saturday. So far I have prepared a list of my household and personal effects. Anyone have any experience with this process?

I don't have my husband with me (he's in Afghanistan) and I'm getting worried about my treatment from the border agents. I just want to make sure I have everything down to a T. I might just call my father in law and ask him to accompany me. He has offered, but it's just so out of his way.

  16. Honda Finance US will allow you to transfer your Honda Finance Canada car loan into the US - you can't do it the other way (from US to Canada) but you can from Canada to the US.

Is that what they told you? Is this what you are doing? They told me this when I called a few months ago - the woman even told me it was very common especially among health professionals and teachers who move to the states. However, when I called back just a few weeks ago they said the policy had changed and now loans will have to be paid off. She did say there was a form I could fill out to keep making payments but that they are rarely ever approved anymore.

  17. Of course not. They are just trying to figure out how much money you have so they can figure out how much to charge you.

I was always amazed when I would go to a dentist for example. They would have a question on what you did for a living. This was so they could determine which scale to use. I would just answer laborer or something like that.

And here I thought they asked one's occupation so they could determine what kind of lifestyle a patient has...in terms of office work or working on oil rigs for example.
