  1. Once the visa is issued by USEM, it is valid for 6 months. This means you have 6 months in which to travel to the US. As soon as you enter the US on your K-1 visa, the visa is void. It's a single entry visa.

When you enter the US, you are issued with a white I-94 card. This is what permits your presence in the US for up to 90 days. In order to qualify to adjust your status, you must marry the original petitioner of the K-1 visa within those 90 days. They don't care whether it's on day 1 or day 89.

As far as obtaining paperwork, you should wait 14 days from entering the US before going to the Social Security Agency local office and applying for a SS number. You will need to take your passport with your K-1 and your I-94.

Your marriage license, you'd usually get from the county courthouse but look this up for your county and state. Some require a waiting period and blood test, others issue it on the spot. You do not need a SSN to get a marriage license.

Once you are married, you have fulfilled the conditions required to continue being present in the US as the spouse of a US citizen. If you're not planning on getting married until close to the end of the 90 days, you can still fill out all the forms for your AOS ready to send. You are not going to have any problems with the adjustment process if you do not send in your AOS until after the 90 days. Some states are very slow in sending the marriage certificate, some people encounter financial problems. It is of course advisable that you adjust as soon as possible, but not illegal if you don't mail it within those 90 days.

As for other documentation, most banks will allow you to be added to an account when you have your SSN. Many states will only issue a Driver's License once your EAD or GC come through.

In short, don't panic. Concentrate on getting your marriage license, getting married and applying for your SSN; the rest is not as time critical...

wow! thank you so much for all the details.. i came here last December 22 [POE] and were getting married @ the City Hall in SFO this February 22 2011

everything must be done by appointment.. [Marriage License & Ceremony] we'll do both at the same time! ^_^ yay!

as far as the certificate, i think i saw it will be released 1-2 weeks after marriage...

but i'm relieved now thanks so much for the infos... i just thought i got 90 days to process my marriage and the AOS... oh, BTW i got my SSN with a stamped for valid for WORK only with DHS Authorization.. after i get married, do i need to re-apply/update my SSN? can i work after getting married?

    thanks again!

  2. hi guys

i was wondering , a US fiance/k-1 visa is usually given/issued with a 90 day / 3 months entry or stay in the USA..

    the question is:

how long does the the 90 days remain valid? is it after i get married or after the AOS Approval, that i don't need to count those remaining days anymore?!

i was just like checking the processing days/weeks of managing all documents that needed to do [marriage license, wedding, application for ssn, application for AOS, and submission of forms needed] that the 90 days would lapse

with all those paperworks and processing times...

    thank you!

  3. This is my second week stay here in the US after my POE.. guys i was just wondering.. which one should i go first?

apply for an SSN or get MARRIED first.. correct me if i'm wrong but i read some forums/post that they wont give you an SSN , so you have to get married first before they give you one.. because the people from SSA wont know if your getting married or not..

"Technically, the K-1 Visa is a nonimmigrant visa. If the K-1 Visa holder does not marry the U.S. citizen in 90 days, he or she must leave the U.S., negating the need for a Social Security Number. Therefore, prior to marriage within the 90 day period, the INS and Social Security Administration do not know whether the K-1 Visa holder will in fact marry and become an alien with an immigrant intent. After marriage does take place, the Adjustment of Status process includes requesting an EAD which then becomes the action point for obtaining the Social Security number."

and about getting married thing... my fiancee had been working here in the US for about 5 years now. and were getting married thru court/via judge..and about changing names.. what would you advice? i know it would be a hassle/nightmare to change name as you need to change everything from your Driver's license, passport, credit card, bank, title and registration (for your car), deed for your home and oh! There's tax records. - should we change names now? or should we change it later in the future, as we are planning to get married in the PHILIPPINES [church wedding] after 2 years..

    what do you think?!

    thanks in advance! :)

    Happy New Year everyone!

  4. thanks guys! i went to ST.MARY's and there was no hassle going to the place, just took LRT2 from Cubao going to Katipunan and once outside, it was on the next Blue/Green Building standing on the other side of the road..

i came right on time as i decided to take the LRT instead of taking a Cab as there was some heavy traffic going on down the road... taking LRT was just 2-3 minutes... very convinient! :)

the counseling started @ 8:30AM with just 6 of us, started filling up forms and paid fees one for P200 registration and the P400 for the sticker and certificate.. watched some clips from an old news report from Noli de Castro "MGB" :) and

after a few hours.. i had mine stamped and got my certificate of attendance and placed the sticker on the passport! yay!

[i didnt have to go to the CFO main office as they already had an extension office at St. Mary's toO so that means less hassle going to the main office]

Thank you so much for sharing and all the advice!

    very helpful! :)

next stop.... Point of Entry... :)

  5. hi guys,

i'm not sure if im posting this on a right forum post... but anyways, i need help on CFO Seminar Processing here in Manila, which would only take just for 1 day, i live in a province and i don't want, if possible going back and forth to get this Seminar done..

which is the best way to do this? walk me thru please? :)

i know there are 3 places to go to.. ST. MARY's near Katipunan LRT / PRISM in ??? / CFO Main in Quirino Ave

if i take St. Mary's , will i get the certificate and the sticker/stamp on passport done here? or i still need to go to CFO for the sticker/stamp?

    thanks in advance! :)

  6. Guys! i got my VISA already... it has my passport and one envelope which has the "NO TOUCHING and OPENING of the BROWN ENVELOPE THING" hehehe...

now i have my VISA and i'm so HAppy! tears! tears!

i got it , on its 15th day around 10:30 AM

the journey doesn't end here... we will have a new journey as i come in the US

Thanks everyone! for their support and prayers!!!

::hopes for everyone a happy and speedy process on their VISA's::

  7. thank you!

phil&wi : they must live close to manila i guess..

does any of you at least got a tracking #? we don't have anything except the word of person in 2go boot at MNL embassy that we should expect delivery in a week. this procedure is quite unusual.

i dont have any tracking # , i think none of us were given. i cant even call 2go for followup cause they keep on asking for a tracking #. the only thing i saw on that white paper was a sticker with 5 numbers on it but it wasnt the tracking # , written name , address, phone number... and the guys said on the booth was delivery will be in a few days once the processing is done from embassy..

it is very unsual indeed.. i'd rather pay for a quick and informative delivery.. rather than just sitting here, waiting. :(

also i think this delay stuff is because of the new implementation or processing of visa which started Dec.01 , or are they getting too many paperworks at the office?

    ::PATIENCE::

  8. Yeah I am kind of worried about this when the time comes. My wife lives in Butuan and I have never had anything but problems when it comes to her receiving things.

lets just hope everything will be fine.. i live in a province too , so i'm getting all these mixed feelings regarding the

Visa... and i'm still not satisfied with the results until i get my hands on my passport :)

Good Luck to all those who are waiting!

  9. @all

thanks guys!, i really hate this feeling, it's when you feel frustrated/worried/bothered

whether your Visa was approved, not approved, or some more documents needed... but i'm pretty sure that guy consul told me

    that i passed.. :P

    @Phil& Wi

    was he/she on K-1 too?!

    @all

will update you guys everyday and please lemme know if you guys received yours... THANKS!

Congratz on your visa approval!!! :star:

Hang in there...your visa will be in your hand malapit na!

    Thank you! :)

  10. Hi Everyone!

since December 01, Manila Embassy started using 2GO as their courier for sending passports to applicants, for all i know , no additional payment means , slower and longer delivery services...

i had an interview last December 01, 2010... but until now Day 14, i haven't received my Visa/Passport yet?

has anyone already received their Visa/Passport since December 01?

it's kinda frustrating as , you have no idea what's going on right now at the Manila Embassy :(

is there a number to call for follow-ups here in the Philippines?

    Thanks Everyone!
