it has been a while since I supplied an update, but it was because of vacation. I have not updated our timeline but my wife had her oath ceremony on May 24th! another new US citizen! We left for a vacation to Ukraine the very next day and just returned late Monday night. However, complications ensued with the travels. Since we left the day after the ceremony, we did not have a USA passport for her so her ticket was in her Ukrainian name--like her previous travels. However, instead of having a green card we carried her naturalization certificate since it proves she is a US citizen. We had no trouble until our return trip. We left Ukraine just fine but Warsaw, Poland refused to let my wife board the plane for our connection to Chicago. The reason: not a valid travel document. They told me that I could travel on without her. After 20 hours of being in the cold airport (she was not allowed to leave the airport because she did not have a visa for Poland--required for "Ukrainian citizens".) and MULTIPLE phone calls with the US Embassy in Warsaw, we were allowed to leave Poland. I will spare you the gory details. At Chicago, we had a secondary conversation at the border but it was minor and easy. Hindsight has taught me that we should have not traveled until the US passport was in hand, or have gone on vacation before the oath ceremony! Let our pain be a lesson for anyone considering travel like we did. But we are home now and will apply for her passport at leisure now.

That sounded stressful! I just submitted a letter to have my oath ceremony extended as we have a planned trip to Canada three weeks after the ceremony. I was going to chance it and sumbit my passport application assuming the gov't would have a quick turn around, but government processing is something with which we are all too familiar! I'm glad I did though, especially after reading your post. I don't know how I would explain my extended Canadian vacation to my employer while stranded at an airport!

Also, I don't think you'll end up waiting as long as 3 months to get your oath ceremony. It seems to be something standard that they say.

forgot to add some things (I can't edit the post(?)):

Are all security guards at USCIS offices nice and funny? I always leave the security area at the KC office almost in tears from laughter (that's about five times in the past 3 years). I wonder if they do that for screening reasons, or just because they're bored.

The IO also asked to see my "selective service" card as she "couldn't find me in the system", and for proof that me and my wife live at the same address. Luckily our 2011 notarized tax return did that, as I left all of the other evidence in my car. I only brought what the letter requested: passports, PR card, marriage license, and select service evidence. I brought our tax return assuming that they would want it.

If I were to do the interview again, I would be sure to review my N-400 application as I wasn't prepared for her to question me on EVERY line!

I just completed my interview and was approved to be recommended to be naturalized (if that's the correct wording)!

The interview was at the Kansas City, MO office, and took about 20 minutes. I entered the office, took an oath, sat down, wrote the sentence "New York was the first Capitol", read: "The President of the United States is Barack Obama", and answered: What is one right or freedom from the First Amendment?, What did the Declaration of Independence do?, Who is in charge of the executive branch? , If the President can no longer serve, who becomes President?, There are four amendments to the Constitution about who can vote. Describe one of them., What is one reason colonists came to America?. She then quizzed me on every line of my N-400 application (I almost forgot the middle two numbers of my SSN (!)). The question that asks how many times you've traveled outside of the US in the last five years, and "how many days have you spent outside of the US" had to be changed because I applied through the three year marriage option and answered the question as it read.

The IO joked around a little with side stories about her visits to the area I grew up in, and she had a large smile when she was explaining that I was approved to be recommended and should expect a letter regarding my oath ceremony in 2-3 months. I was happy, but 2-3 months is a long time!

So... I think I'm almost done with the USCIS. I'm just awaiting approval from the recommendation (is this right, or is that just something that they have to say as approved interviewees are not citizens until oath?) and for the details about the oath ceremony!

ALMOST DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interview date scheduled for... May 3! It's a little late, relative speaking, but I'll take it!I hope the Oath ceremony follows shortly thereafter. Can you travel out of the country as an approved citizen, but minus the oath? I guess I should search the boards!

If you file today, tax returns for 2008, 2009, and 2010 is all you need, next month, may have to add a year to each of those returns or may want to see your 2011 returns during your interview.

Since I am a male chauvinist pig, my name is on top of our joint returns, so had to use my name to get joint returns for my immigrant wife. Really, the only thing the USCIS wants to see are both your names on the same return.

Is an exception however, if you filed married but separately, then would have to bring in both returns. In our case as well as many others, will end up paying more taxes that way as many deductions are not available when filing separately.

If both of you filed single separately while married, would be in deep trouble, not only with the USCIS, but with the IRS as well. Our income tax system is the most complicated than anywhere else in the world with over a thousand different forms. I grew up with it, but certainly can see the confusion for a person new to this country. My wife really has to trust me since she also has to sign those papers. Only hear about tax reform during an election, then a dead issue. Keeps on getting more complicated with over 13,000 pages on tax laws.

Hello!

I'm having no luck obtaining my tax transcripts through the IRS's automated system. I've filed jointly with my wife for the past three years and I was able to order her's through the system, but all of mine were 'unavailable'. I filed as 'single' before we were married in 2007, and that transcript was available. Would the 'joint' status be affecting this? My name was listed second on the returns under her name. Is its unavailability a red flag for: 'you haven't filed your taxes?'. That's my main concern, although our tax return copies have my name listed w/ SSN as "joint".

There's a local IRS office in my city. Does anyone know if I'm able to drop in to inquire? Or should I not worry as I was able to obtain my wife's transcripts?

My wife and I had my conditions lifted under the exact circumstances you and your husband are in with no problems. Our permanent address is my mother in-law's (bank, uscis, driver's licenses, insurance, etc., for ex. are listed here), but our physical address is in another city about 3 hours east (our rental address and utility address, for ex, are listed here). We submitted everything requested/listed on VJ with their respected addresses, sans a letter addressing the conflicting mailing addresses, and were approved without an interview.

From my experience, you have nothing to worry about. But if you're wary of what USCIS will think, just add a letter explaining why two addresses are listed.

side note: I wish I could live in a city in which a driver's license is not needed. Jealous!
