  1. He gave the the notice right there on the spot. I didn't look at the questions, but I know there's a questionnaire he told me to fill out before the ceremony.

I had my AOS downtown as well. I was so happy this one wasn't at the same place. Such a pain driving downtown.

My wife became a citizen at the old Baltimore location (in downtown Baltimore where it was very expensive to park) a little over two years ago.

Like you her interview and ceremony were on two different days. She was told by the officer that she was going to recommend she be approved as long as everything else was in order. She got her oath ceremony notice in the mail the following week for 10 days after that. She actually left the US the night she had her interview, but travel as GC. She told the officer that she was leaving the US that night and the officer said if she is not back in time for the date of her oath ceremony she could reschedule. However, she came back about 3 days before the date they scheduled for her ceremony.

At the time of the interview, the only document that the officer asked to see was her GC. My wife said the officer had her entire immigration file (everything we submitted for AOS and ROC) on her desk. My wife had to confirm some information in the file, and was given the test.

I told her to bring all cards that USCIS issued to her to the oath ceremony. At the oath ceremony they took both her expired conditional GC and her 10-year GC since she didn't need either of those now since she was becoming a citizen. She said the entire ceremony took about an hour.

Did the officer actually give you the ceremony notice or did he say it was coming in the mail? On the back of the notice is a questionnaire that you have to fill out and give to the officers at the ceremony. I remember one of the questions asked since the interview have you been outside of the US. Of course, my wife checked yes, and the officer that reviewed the form at the ceremony asked her what countries, wrote them down, and had my wife initial.

  2. Hello everyone,

I haven't logged on here in a while, but thought it was worth it to share my experience with those going through the naturalization process.

My interview was at the field office in Baltimore. I don't know how long construction is going to go on for, but try to get there a little earlier since a big part of the parking lot is closed and parking is extremely tight.

I got in line at 2:15pm (my interview was at 2:51). There was a couple dozen people in front of me, but the x-Ray line moved pretty fast.

Once inside, I just checked in with the nice man in the counter and waited what I think was like 15 minutes before they called my name. I didn't bring my phone in because I thought it wasn't allowed, but everyone had their cell phones there. Oh well.

So I came in and an officer probably on his 30s conducted my interview. He was really nice. He told me all interviews are recorded and placed me under oath. He only asked to see my GC, passport, and DL. I moved since sending my application, so he asked me for the MVA's change of address. So glad I did that a couple of weeks before my interview.

He then proceeded to go over my application. Not actually asking my to respond to all of it like a PR interviewer would, but just saying, "so you live at XYZ address? Is your husband's date of birth ABC?" Pretty easy stuff. Just confirm everything you wrote in the application and you'll be fine. He also went through the YES and NO questions. At the end, I signed the form and my pictures and was ready to move on.

    Civics Test

I answer the first 6 questions correctly and he stopped right then. My questions were:

    1. Which people were bright to America to be sold as slaves?

    2. How many amendments in the constitution?

    3. What's the Vice President's name?

    4. Why did the colonists fought the British?

    5. Who makes federal laws?

    6. What's the supreme law of the land?

Pretty easy. He asked me if I studied and I said a lot. He giggled.

    Reading and Writing

My reading sentence was "Who can vote" and I had to write "All citizens can vote." No ordeal there whatsoever.

After that, he said I was done and that my application was very good, all paper work in place and very organized. He said I was his last and easiest interview of the day. Phew!

We scheduled my Oath ceremony for the 19th in the same location. I can't wait!

I still have my expired conditional GC, which he thought was unusual, so he made a copy and reminded me to bring both to the ceremony.

That was it. It was the easiest interaction I had with the uscis since coming to the U.S. (Easier than some biometrics appointments, haha). Good luck to you all. Like he told me, between the interview and oath, stay out of trouble and don't leave the country. :)

  3. I don't remember exactly, but i think i got an info pass appt before sending everything with the I90. You'll also get a Welcome to the US letter. Take that and your GC with you to the appt. before sending the wrong one to them. Make copies of everything too, just to be safe. And if ou don't have it yet, change your name on all other documents so you can send more proof and skip the fee.

  4. Tet,

Yea, all worked out fine. It's been a while, actually, so I don't remember exactly what I did. But I sent it back to them and asked for a replacement claiming their fault. I sent copies of all letters from them with my correct name, DL, SSN (if you read above, I don't think they could replace it without the GC but I got lucky, and a letter explaining why I wanted the change.

It was approved and I didn't have to pay for it.

    Good luck!

  5. Got my bio done today :)

  11. So I went to SSA this morning, and they changed my name. I wasn't going to show my GC and only do the name changed and not the removal of conditions. I told her, however, that I had the GC with a wrong name and that I was going to send it back to USCIS. She asked to see it because it determines PR. She said she shouldn't update until the GC was corrected, but that she would proceed with the change, anyways. I was relived! She told me to go ahead and send the GC back as soon as possible so it wouldn't be any differences between agencies.

SSN will get on the mail in about a week. After that, I will change my driver's license. I decided to send the GC back right now, with copies of the notices and EAD. If they deny my request, I will send copies of my SSN and DL (I'm guessing by the time they come up with a decision, I'll have those documents in hand).

I also made an infopass appointment for next week to get a stamp on my passport. I won't go to Brazil until December, but we never know. USCIS Customer Service told me I could get one with my approval letter.

    Thanks everyone :)

  12. Yes, GC is required to remove the "Valid for work only with DHS authorization".

However, for name change, you don't have to wait for the GC.

To be safe, change your DMV Driver's License or DMV Photo ID to your new name first before heading to SSA with your marriage certificate.

I've read a note regarding name change from the site below. Even though this information is from WA state regarding SSA requirement for name change, it might be used in other states.

Note: The SSA notifies the IRS of name changes Important Change!! SSA will no longer accept a certified copy of your marriage certificate alone to process your name change request. We recommend that you put off requesting an SSA name change until you have gone through Driver Licensing and have received your laminated license with your new name. Please contact SSA for details and alternatives.

Yea, it is necessary to change my name on SSA in order to change my Driver's License. I'm not even too worried about the restriction (since the GC voids it), I was just going to wait for the GC so I could change both things at once. My main concern is just my name. And since I can do that with only my EAD, I'll go ahead and do it.

Now question: should I send my GC right away, or should I wait for me to get the SSN and DL on my new name and submit them as proof of my legal name? I don't know if the DHS will make a big deal out of it, or if it is an easy process. It's not that my name was spelled wrong or anything. They just kept the wrong surname. I would rather send it now, but if there's a chance they will deny it, I'll wait.

Thanks everyone for the replies :)

  13. Why would you have to wait for your Green Card to change your name on the SSN card?

Now that you have your EAD with the correct legal name (your husband name), go to SSA local office for name change along with your marriage cetificate.

Go to the DMV with name change along with your EAD documentation and marriage certificate.

Because my SSN has the words "Valid for work only with DHS authorization" (I entered the country as an Au Pair) and I've been said that they would only remove that condition with a Green Card.

If I go to a SSN office with my EAD and marriage certificate to change my name, won't they ask to see my GC? If so, I'm guessing it'll be a problem since the name is different. That's what I don't know what to do. If I can change my name on my SSN before sending out my GC, I'll be glad, because then I can change my DL as well, and send copy of both documents as proof.

  14. All my documents are still on my maiden name (except for my EAD). I was waiting for my Green card so I could change my SSN, then drivers license and all the rest. I didn't change my SSN yet because I need to change my name and remove the "work with authorization only" message, so I didn't want to do it twice.

What should I do? Send my green card now, or go get my ssn and drivers license first?

I'm going to register my marriage on the Brazilian embassy. I'm just waiting for my husband's renewed passport and my new birth certificate. I was just waiting for my GC to do everything at once, but now I'm confused.

    Thanks!
