  1. There's a "FNU" in front of my wife's first and last name. "FNU" means First Name unknown. How can I fix this? When I filled out the I-130 months ago, I had her first name under first name, and last name under family name.

    Tony

I also have the same "FNU" problem.. FNU problem will happen if ur wife's surname is blank in her passport.. so u have to cancel her present passport and apply for a new passport by including her surname (apply as 'Tatkal').. this is called "name bifurication".. I asked abt this to chennai consulate.. they told me to do like this...

    http://chennai.usconsulate.gov/temporary-visitors/faqs.html

now indian passport authorities don't give observations for name bifurication.. they will issue new passport for that by cancelling the old one.. ur new passport also includes the passport number of old passport

Don't need to apply for the PCCs from local police stations or SP office as per the new immigration rules...Passport office will provide two copies of PCC.. one u can send to the NVC.. and u can submit the 2nd one at the interview at conulate... if u have doubt pls go to the department of state website.. http://travel.state.gov/visa/fees/fees_4881.html?cid=3582 pls go to the police records below...

    Hello All,

I do see everyone sending originals of police certificates along with DS-230 form for the IV packet by beneficiary. My husband born, brought-up and studied in one state, but is working in different state.

Can some one please let me know, police certificate that the beneficiary will send along with the packet is for how many years? Is it for 5 yrs or is it since that time he is 16 yrs.

Thank you in advance for the response.

    Thanks

  4. Our petition was approved and is in the process of being sent to the NVC.

My wife currently resides in Hyderabad, India. She went to the UK to work (but on a tourist visa) for 2 years from 2007 - 2009. Will she be required to get a police certificate from the UK? If so, who should we contact to obtain it?

    Thanks!

This is what Department of State saying about police clearance certificates for indian citizens..

    Police Records

Indian Police Clearance Certificates should be obtained as follows:

All Indian IV applicants aged 16 and above, residing in India, should obtain police certificates from the local Passport Office.

Indian passport holders applying for visas outside India should obtain a statement from their local embassy or consulate confirming they have no criminal record.

Non-Indian IV applicants residing in India should obtain police certificates from the District Police Station serving their area of residence.

Indian police certificates are not available for foreign (non-Indian) applicants applying outside India.

I think ur consulate is Chennai... if u have any doubts u can contact chennai consulate at ChennaiIV@state.gov.. They will reply immediately..and u need to send these police clearance certificates along DS-230 (Immigrant Visa Application) to the NVC..

  5. Actually I asked this question to chennai embassy because I am working in a different part of the country.. and they replied like this..

    Dear Sir,

This is in response to your inquiry. Indian PCC – you have to obtain only from the passport office where your passport was issued.

    Sincerely,

And one main travel agency which is working as professional consultancy for american visas also told me that now rules are changed.. now they need only local passport office police clearance... earlier u need police clearance from local SP offices also where u lived for more than 6 months.. a lot of people r getting the immigrant visa only with passport office PCC

  6. In country reciprocity, it says you need to get PCC from local passport office.

However chennai consulate website still shows that you need to get local PCC from appropriate police authorities. Here is the link

Lets see how others give their opinion.

  10. This is what Chennai consulate web site reads....!!! so answer is yes you have to get the PCC from all the places you have lived after the Age of 16, I hope this helps...Good Luck..!!!

    Police Certificates

Each visa applicant over the age of 16 must present original police certificates. Police certificates must cover the entire period of the applicant's residence in any area. The term "police certificate" means a certification by appropriate police authorities stating what their records show concerning each applicant, including all arrests, the reasons for the arrests, and the disposition of each case of which there is a record. Police certificates from certain countries are considered unobtainable. For more information on police certificate requirements see the instructions below:

Indian Citizens Age 16 and above, Residing In India:

All Indian IV applicants aged 16 and above, residing in India, should obtain police certificates from the local passport office.

Indian Citizens Age 16 and above, Who Live Outside of India:

Indian passport holders applying for visas outside India should obtain a statement from their local embassy or consulate confirming they have no criminal record.

Non-Indian IV applicants Residing In India:

Non-Indian IV applicants residing in India should obtain police certificates from the District Police Station serving their area of residence.

Indian police certificates are not available for foreign (non-Indian) applicants applying outside India.

All Applicants Who Have Resided In Any Other Country for One Year or More:

All Immigrant Visa applicants who have resided in any country outside of India for 12 months or more while age 16 or over are required to present a police clearance certificate from that country, even if it is their home country. For additional information, see: http://travel.state.gov/reciprocity/country_pick.htm. To find information for the country in which you lived, click on letter at the top that represents the first letter of the country in which you lived. For details on how to obtain a police clearance certificate, please contact the nearest Consulate or Embassy of the country in which you have lived.

    NOTE:

Police certificates are valid only for 12 months from the date of issuance.

Police certificates are not required for applicants under the age 16.
