  1. I have my immigration interview this coming Tuesday. I live with my husband's mother, so I don't have utility bills, rent, or anything. I hear that this is needed as it's proof of our legit marriage. I have other proof like pictures, ultrasound pictures of our baby, letter of positive pregnancy from doctor, etc. But, what should my mother-in-law write to say that we do live with her with no rent to pay? If someone could write out an example, it'd be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks!!

  2. Thanks, but here's one question I'm afraid they'll ask: "Why did you get married while on a tourist visa? Why did you not file for a fiancee visa like you're suppose to?". How am I suppose to answer that? We honestly just decided that it'd be really cool to get married one year since he proposed. So, 2 weeks later, we got married at the Town Hall. Would that be good enough as an answer? I didn't know all the rules of immigration prior to this!

  3. My husband and I have our interview set for May 23rd. By that time, I'll be 15 weeks pregnant, and my family is hoping that I can come up to Canada sometime in August for a Baby Shower. If my husband and I pass our interview, when will I receive my Green Card?

Also, if I have the actual Green Card with me, can I travel back to Canada again? Is there any chance I'll be turned away at the border (trying to get back to the US)? If so, what should I have to guarantee me return to the US? I'm not risking going to Canada if there is a chance my husband and I will be separated, especially since there's a little one on the way now.

    Thanks everyone for your input!!

  4. I got the letter saying exactly what to bring, but a lot of it says only if I hadn't submitted it in already (which most of it I have). Someone told me I should bring everything anyways. What is your opinion?

Also, what questions will they ask my husband and me? We talked on the phone for over 4 years, at least 5 hours a day, so we know each other pretty well. However, are there any "hard" questions that they ask? Like, "What can you offer America"? I'd like to plan those answers ahead of time. Is there maybe a website that gives you example questions that they will ask? When I get nervous (which I presume I'll be), I sometimes stutter, and I don't want them thinking I'm lying or anything!!

Not sure if this is needed to answer the above questions, but I married my husband while I was a tourist, and so I'm adjusting my status. Interview date is for May 23rd in Norfolk, VA!

  5. I just received my EAD in the mail yesterday! So, I started to apply to jobs online, however I need a social security number. Does my EAD allow me to work even without a SSN? Like, should I go to the store in person and just show them my card? Or do I have to now apply for a SSN? I am pregnant and wanting to get a job as soon as possible to save up. Thank you to everyone who answers/reads this! I really appreciate it.

  6. Assuming I pass the interview on May 23rd, I will receive my Green Card, correct? When do I have to "lift conditions"? What forms will I have to file? With my new Green Card, will I be able to work? I'm asking this because I now have my Employment Authorization Card (I-765 was approved), but it says it's only good for 1 year. So, do I have to reapply in like 9 months to get another Employment Authorization Card, or because I have my Green Card, I am clear? I don't want to mess this up!

Oh, not sure if this is needed to make things clearer, but I married my husband while on a tourist visa, and am still currently in the US. I am adjusting my status.

Thanks everyone! And if I posted this in the wrong section, sorry!

  7. First of all, thank you for reading this! If I posted this in the wrong place (again), my apologies! My husband and I, who have been married for 2 Months are in the process of Immigration (I-130 and I-485). I found out earlier this week that I'm pregnant! It was a shock, but we're both happy. I have been calling to midwives in the area and birthing centers, however, I did call one hospital and they may be able to help. It's not Medicaid or Welfare, which I know is off limits, but it's a "Charity" fund the hospital does itself. It's called Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and they think I could apply for that as I do not have a job yet (or Social Security Number).

Does this count as "Government Assistance", or no? I do not want to do anything that will jeopardize my Immigration Process. If I cannot, I have a midwife that is of reasonable cost that I will be hiring.

Thank you all for your help, and once again, if I posted in the wrong area, sorry!!

  8. Hey!

I got a letter in the mail a few days ago, saying I have an appointment in Charleston, WV to have my Biometrics done. I was wondering what that all includes. Did I do something wrong? My husband thinks it's just fingerprints and pictures being done. Also, it only took a week and a bit for me to get that letter (since I sent all the forms in). How soon should it be now until I can legally work? I filed the appropriate I-765 Form.

If I have any more questions, I'll ask. Thanks in advance!!

  9. I have the form at home, though I forget the title. I am adjusting my status from a tourist to a permanent resident as I married an American. I was hoping to visit my family though in August, as it'll be 1 years since I last saw them. What I really want to know is, is can I still be denied entry to the US, even if I fill out the form and get approved? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that even with all the right forms and such, the people at the border don't have to let you back in. I'm just wanting to visit them for 2 weeks, though I'm not jeopardizing my status/progress.

If you think I should just stay put until I can legally leave the country without permission, how long does that usually take? I just want to give my family an estimate of when I can visit them with no question.

Last thing, if someone in my family were to die all of a sudden, can I or can I not go up for the funeral? Couldn't I get a death certificate and bring it to the US Embassy, or would it not matter.

In the long run, I just want to be safe and not risking deportation. Thanks everyone for your help! It is greatly appreciated.

  10. The forms just seem to be getting harder, haha. This is for the I-485 Application to Adjust Status

    1. I-94 and Alien Number, None, N/A or 0’s

    2. What is my current USCIS Status? I just came here from Canada as a Visitor (though no document was given)

    3. When does it expire? *If I have a USCIS Status

    4. What am I in Part 2? Like I said, just came here for a visit, married my husband out of the blue, and am now filing this.

    5. Where was my Last Entry into the US? I left from Toronto by Plane. I landed in Charlotte, NC, and then arrived to Roanoke, VA.

    6. What was my status (Visitor?)

    7. Was I inspected by a US Immigration Officer? I was pulled aside in Toronto as I was leaving for so long (5 months) into another room. Were they Immigration Officers, or just security?

    8. No Visa, just blank N/A or none for all of this section

    9. Is my husband applying with me or no? He lives here, so I wouldn't think so.

    10. N/A or None in Part 3

    11. Interpreter, N/A or None (as I can speak and read and write english)

    Thanks again!

  11. Thank you every one for your help! It's greatly appreciated! Now, I'm on I-130 Petition for Alien Relative. This one I have quite a few questions for.

    1. I didn't arrive with a I-94 (You don't need to in Canada), so do I put Zeros all the way across where asked, or just leave that blank (but write when I arrived here)?

    2. Relative's native alphabet, N/A or None (I can't decide which to put for many things)

    3. #22 - I have NO idea where to even begin

You guys are so much help. Thank you all.

  12. Sorry, I'll be adding on other questions as I go along with my forms. With my husband, he would put "Other", not Naturalization or Permanent Resident, right? So, to specify, should he just so Sponsor, or how should we write that?

    Thanks everyone!!

  13. As I don't have an alien number, do I leave it blank, put N/A or None? Same thing with the US Social Security Number and Former husbands; Do I just leave it all blank, put N/A or None?

As I was a tourist and married an American, am I going for permanent resident or other? I'm sure it's not Naturalization.

For my employment records, for the address, is the town and province sufficient enough, or do I need the actual street address, town, province, postal code and country? When they ask what my last abroad job was, if not listed above, do I just leave it blank (as I already wrote it above), or write "See above"?

    Thanks everyone with your help!

  14. Thanks everyone for your replies so far. Sorry that I forgot to mention what I was doing! AOS is what I am doing (I came here in August, got married in December, and now am in the painful process of everything). I didn't know you could do that, about finding out what vaccinations I've already received. I'll have to call them and see how much they charge for it, as it would make everything that much better. Unfortunately, they also want all my original medical reports, so they know what my medical condition has been like for the past ___ years. Worse comes to worse, I guess I can get the vaccinations over with, and try to talk to them at the appointment about everything else (though they said that they want everything first before we have an appointment). Ugh, out of the millions of people in Canada, I have to fall in love with one from another country. Don't get me wrong, I love him dearly; been together for almost 5 years (!) but damn it's hard!

  15. I got the list from the USCIS website, and I found a doctor and his fees are $240. Apparently they need my vaccination records and all other ORIGINAL records from my doctor in Canada. I call up and apparently I need to fill out a Medical Release Form. Now, where do I get one of these? From Canada, or from the US? Do I let my new doctor's office get them? I thought it was my responsibility? I'm just really stressed as I thought this would be one of the easier things; go in, pay up, leave. I'm only legal here till February 18, as a Canadian can only be here for 6 months at a time (I got here August 18 2010 visiting). I married my husband on December 28 2010, and all the forms are filled out. It's just this that is holding us up. How long will it take for them to send down the forms, my new doctor to go over them, and then call me in for a physical? The last thing I need is to be here illegally. Someone please help?

  16. Thanks everyone for your help! I just heard about medicaid and thought I'd ask, I didn't know it was from tax payers money, sorry! It is my fault (and to-be husband's), and the US shouldn't have to be responsible for helping. That being said, I'm in Virginia right now, and I guess I'll talk to the hospital and see what my options are. Even if I have to go back to Canada, as long as the baby's safe, then that's all that matters. I guess I'd apply for a CR1 or K3, whichever it's called now. Only problem is that I don't have a place to live there, but I think I can find somewhere to go!

And yes, I did find a co-sponsor! We went to the immigration office in DC and they told us how they don't really ever act on co-sponsors unless I apply for welfare. So, his mother decided to sign as our Christmas Present.

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

  17. I'm getting married tomorrow, and as the subject suggests, I'm pregnant (6 weeks). Do I qualify for medicaid? I know I can apply for food stamps, but not welfare. What about medicaid? I am going to be going to the doctors for the I693 form, so I guess when they do the checkup, they will take a blood test and everything. Is there any insurance I can apply for, so I can give birth down here? If not, should I travel (with permission) to Canada a month before the baby is due and wait till it's born?

Thanks everyone. I want to make the best out of this situation!

  18. I am adjusting my status (I came here visiting the US from Canada and am getting married in 2 days!), and all the forms are filled. However, where exactly am I sending the forms? Like what address? Also, do I need to get the I693 (Medical Exam) done before I send in everything, or once I get to a certain stage, they'll inform me to go get it done? Thanks everyone, I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right!

  19. I am getting married in a week, but we're filling out the forms ahead of time. I'm from Canada and I came with no documentation (we have a waiver or something). I've been here since August, and we just decided to get married about 3 weeks ago (no intention). Anyways...

We got the license a few days ago, and the woman saw I was from Canada, and I asked her if I should put my address in Canada or my husband's address as to where they can find me. She told me to just put down my husband's address as that's where I'll be living now. But, can I just assume that? I told her about Immigration, but she said it was going to be fine. Is it? Is it alright that she filled out my address as my husband's, or should I go back and demand she change it to my Canadian address? I just want to make sure I'm doing this right the first time to avoid complications. Thanks in advance!
