  1. Received my ssn yesterday and I applied for it on the 22nd of December. They only took my work authorization card and my passport. Didnt even look at the EAD or the marriage certificate.

    Did you receive yours?

Nope! Still haven't gotten it. I miscalculated it and 4 weeks will be tomorrow. I think it has something to do with me being assigned w/ a SS# before. (after talking to my mom about it) So I'm gonna go in tomorrow and see about it... Congratulations on finally getting yours! That was fast!

  2. My husband's credit is about 1 years old... so it's still new. He doesn't have any derogatory information on his credit report, has 11 accounts open and has paid all of them on time. But he has 3 credit cards that he has almost maxed out and his credit score went from a 725 to a 565 in a matter of 2 months.... He has other credit cards that have a zero balance that he never uses but was told that if he closed them, that it could impact his credit score in a negative way so he just left the accounts open. When he gets his Christmas bonus from his job, he's going to pay all of the credit cards off and make them all a zero balance.

How long will it take for his credit score to go back up if all of his credit cards are paid off?? He paid one credit card off a few months ago and the representative told him that they report things to credit bureaus once a month but I wonder how long it takes for the score to go up... I hope it doesn't take that long since it went down so fast. In the beginning his credit score was a 595, and it increased to a 725 pretty fast but I just don't know about these circumstances. We are moving soon and we're relying on his credit to get approved for apartments since I have no credit what so ever!

  3. Since, with the new system that SSA uses to process SSN applications, no actual form is used or signature is needed, that is what they ask to input the electronic signature. They made a copy of your documents for verification purposes. So nothing out of the ordinary there.

If you were able to request a Social Security Statement online with the SSN and using your date and place of birth and mother's maiden name, I'm 99.9999 percent sure you have an SSN record. One thing you could try is calling the SSA 800# 1-800-772-1213 and give them the SSN tell them you need to know the date your SSN was assigned (the CYD date). Give them some story of needing it for some type of insurance. They will ask for the same info you provided for the Social Security Statement. If they give you the CYD date, you do have an SSN.

Other than getting your immigration status verified, here is where you might have a problem. If you didn't list the SSN on the application and it is really your number, when your immigration status verifies and they try to clear the application they will get an enumeration alert, because you are applying for an original SSN and the info you put on the application matches an SSN record. That will have to be cleared up. Easy to correct when you prove the SSN is yours and you didn't know your parent's had applied for a number for you. The hard thing is getting the office to take the time to get things straightened out.

What status did you apply based on? If you applied as a K-1 I wouldn't hold my breath on getting the SSN card. More than likely your status will expire before you get this corrected. Then you will need an EAD card or I-551 stamp or card to be issued a replacement card. In the meantime, you can ask for an SSN Verification Printout. Not the same as having an SSN card, but will be some proof until you can be issued an SSN card.

Wow, thanks for that information! Do you work for SSA?? You just gave me a lot of useful and specific information up there lol What do you mean by what status did I apply based on? I came to the U.S. when I was 1 years old under a b1/b2 visa w/ my mom. My husband's petition and my adjustment of status application just got approved last Thursday, and when I applied for my social security number a few weeks ago, I used my I-94, passport and EAD. I have to go back soon anyway once I get the alien registration card to show SSA that...

When I applied for the social security number, she actually made me fill out a form and sign it... is that something different or do they just use that as reference to look at while they're typing in the information on their computer? Should I go to the SSA office ASAP or after the 4 weeks? And will I get in trouble do you think???

What is an enumeration alert? That sounds serious..

  4. Did they give you a reference # when you applied? If so, go back and check on the status.

I wouldn't worry until 6 weeks have passed.

I am assuming you have legal status in the US. If not I have no idea.

Yes. They gave me a piece of paper w/ all of that information. Should I go back and check on the status now?

I used my EAD, passport and I-94 to apply. I should have just waited until i got the Alien Registration Card because it just got approved last Thursday. I should be getting it soon.

  5. When I was a kid, my mom gave me a social security number to use... when I turned 16, my dad gave me the social security card so I could work.... A few years ago, while working for an insurance co., my employer told me a few months later that they couldn't verify my social security number thru SSA and told me to go into the SSA office to clear it up. I told my brother about it and he told me NOT to go because our dad had given me a fake social security card. (He gave my older brothers fake cards too...) So I destroyed the card and never used the number again because I figured the number was fake too... (I can't ask my dad whether it was a real or fake number because I have no way of contacting him. He's MIA)

Recently I applied for a social security number (almost 4 week ago). I went to the SSA office about 10 minutes before they closed so the lady that was helping me was kind of rushing. The lady put my information in the computer and kind of looked at me weird... and then asked me "do you agree that you filled this application out to the best of your knowledge and that any false information is considered perjury" i was like.. "yes"... that made me extremely nervous that she asked that... and she got up, made copies of my documents and told me that I should get my card in the mail within 4 weeks. I then told her about what happened with my last employer. I told her that my mom gave me a social security number to memorize and I had been using it for years, and then I told her about the fake card.. etc. (the whole situation that I said in the beginning of this) I asked her if there was any way she could look up the number on her computer and see if it was real so I could just apply for a replacement card... and all she said was "if it is your number and it was assigned to you, then that's your number forever and you will get a card with that number. But if it's not a real number then you'll get a new number" and then I just left because it was obvious she was in a hurry (there was one more person behind me).

One more thing I'd like to add.... before I applied for the social security card a few weeks ago, I asked my mother-in-law if there was a way I could see if the number was real and she told me to go to the SSA website and try to request a Social Security Statement to be sent to me since I had been working under that number and had filed taxes using the number... and if it goes through, then it's most likely a real number. I did that, and it did go through, it said that I should get my statement in 2 weeks (i think) but I still haven't gotten the statement in the mail so I don't know what happened with that.... that was weeks ago.

Anyways, I have been worried about this for weeks because I haven't heard anything and it will be 4 weeks on friday. Should I go back to the SSA office and talk to a supervisor? Or should I just wait it out? Is there anyway I could just call them, or will they not give me information over the phone? Please help! I hope they don't think I lied on my application. :(

  6. Just wanted to share my interview experience w/ everhttp://www.ticker.7910.org/engyone!

We got to the federal building at about 11AM today, it took about 5 minutes to get through the metal detector w/ all of our stuff and kids....the security guards were holding us up talking to our kids too lol but our appointment was at 11:30.

the 2nd floor had about 15 people already there, and we didn't get called in by an officer until 12:05pm... we were out of there by like 12:09pm. lol The officer told us to raise our right hands and promised to tell the truth, then she asked for our ID's.. then she asked me a few questions from this paper she had (if I had ever been arrested, been on any type of government assistance, if I have ever used any false documents for immigration benefits) then made my husband and I sign it. Then she asked for my children's birth certificates and I-94 (she kept all of the originals).. and then told me that I was approved and I should get my card within 2 weeks! That was it! Then she walked us to the exit... She didn't ask us for anything more, she didn't even say more than 1 sentence to my husband. Glad this is all over with!!!

Good luck to everyone else and hope the interview goes well for yall also!!! :):)

  7. Thanks for that. From other postings I think it usually takes 10 business days to get the actual card, so should I start the 10 business days from the 1st email for the card production or 2nd?

I got my EAD exactly a week after I got the approval email and had 2 touches and the email/sms notifications before I received the actual card. Mine was ordered twice too and then they emailed me on Friday notifying me that they sent my EAD out on Thursday, and got it on Monday.

  8. I want to get my Philippine Passport amended and change my last name on it to my married last name... so my question is, do the Philippine Passports still show your "Maiden Name" in the biographic page (the page where it shows your name, date of birth, place of birth, etc.) once you get it amended to change your maiden surname to your married surname?

I tried to google some Philippine Passport imagess to see some examples but they all just show Last, First, and Middle name.... For my middle name, will they just put my maiden name there??

For all of my immigration documents, I've already changed my surname (to my husband's) and just totally dropped my maiden name and kept my middle name. So now, I go by my (first name) (middle name) (married last name)...

Do you guys just suggest that I tell the Philippine Consulate that I DON'T want my maiden name to show... or do they automatically put your maiden name in the "middle name" part???

    Thanks everyone!

  9. Can I apply for a social security number using just my Alien Registration Card and EAD card?

The SSA website states to show proof of Immigration status, Work eligibility, Age and Identity. It also says:

"We may use one document for two purposes. For example, we may use a DHS work permit as proof of both work eligibility and identity. However, you must provide at least two separate documents." http://www.ssa.gov/ss5doc/oriselfres.htm

I figured the Alien Registration Card and EAD would provide all of that information but I wasn't sure if SSA would still ask to see my passport... I need to get it replaced and it's a hassle to go to the Philippine Consulate downtown so I was hoping to be able to just use those 2 documents

    Thanks :)

  11. got the 2nd email for the EAD card production yesterday:) I was reading the thread for August filers and it looks like a lot of them got their EAD's in a few days after the 2nd order for the card production so I'm hoping I get mine soon.. I'm not planning on working until after I get my green card since I'm having a baby next month, but I'd like to go to SSA to apply for my social sec. # ASAP! :luv:

  12. I never said just stop paying did I? I said send a certified letter first explaining what they believe they know and indicating that no more payments will be made to the original landlord until they have met face to face. The op indicated that the landlord is not responding to their calls.

And if the original landlord has lost possession of the property then the new owner has to abide by all local, state & federal laws. They can't just throw the tenants out but they also don't have a contract with the current tenants especially in the case of a month-to-month residency.

I don't know our landlord's address so I won't be able to send him a certified letter :( but thanks for that information!!

  13. hello! I live in Florida and went through this before I purchased a home. I was renting a house and one day got a notice that the bank was filing for foreclosure. I did have a year rental contract, and I was only four months into it. I stopped paying rent at that moment and send the owner a certified letter that I will not be submitted payment to him as I do not know wether he has the security deposit. I instead will deposit my monthly rent into an escrow account until further notice. I also stated I would be looking to live elsewhere right away. Since the paperwork stated the mortgage was 9 months behind, he had rented me the property knowing he was not paying the mortgage an the property would go into foreclosure. He would not return my calls at this point. The fridge broke down and he refused to fix it...so I just kept a log of everything. Then a realtor came knocking on my door saying she was hired by the owner to do a short sale and if people could see the property. Lovely, huh?

If the house was foreclosed on, they bank would have put a notice on the door stating 2 or 3 days to vacate the property. You should have plenty of time and notice before it gets to that stage. You may be able to find out a lot of public information online with the owners name through the court system database. I even contacted the foreclosure lawyers and let them know I was renting the property and they included me on any further communications. Here in Florida, foreclosures and taking months to process, so you may have a good amount of time to save money and deposit on another place. In some situations, the banks are actually drawing lease agreements with the current tenants. I am not a credit expert, but I do not think the owner can put anything on your credit report.

    Good Luck!

Thanks LADUQUE13 for sharing that with me... that was really helpful. To tell you the truth, I don't know whether these condos have already been foreclosed or is up for foreclosure... I need to talk to my neighbor who got the letter to ask for sure what the letter said. I'm going to take your advice and look through the court system database just to make sure!

So are you saying that after we get a notice on the door, that we only have 2 or 3 days to move? I spoke with an attorney and he told me that we would get a 90 day notice to leave, but I'd rather hear from somebody that's been through it.

  14. Hang on a second here... DO NOT stop paying your rent. It is a sure fire way to get evicted and have a real nice blemish on your credit report.

I am a Real Estate broker in Florida and I have seen this scenario more than a few times in the last few years. What state do you live in because the rules on these things vary from state to state.

We just stopped paying rent after we found out. I consulted an attorney today and he told me since I can't contact the landlord and he isn't returning our calls, (I don't even have his address) and we are living here without a lease, the new owners or the bank still have to give us a 90 day notice to leave. I asked him who we should be paying rent to now and he told me that I should contact the county clerk and see if I could deposit the rent money in some type of special account until it gets settled or to just set the money aside to be safe just incase the bank/new owners expect back pay on rent.

I asked him if the banks or old owner/new owner could put this on our credit report and he said he wasn't sure but if there isn't even a written agreement, none of our information is on file or anything (our names, social security #'s or anything) he doubts it.

I live in Illinois. We left a message to the landlord (on his voicemail) that we weren't going to be paying him rent anymore and he never called us back so I guess he doesn't care.

  15. Thank you guys for all of that information... ya'll have been so much help!!! I never knew about the Protecting Tenants at Foreclosure Act and now that I've read about it, I feel so much better!!!

"This legislation, which also covers Section 8 renters, mandates that when a home goes into foreclosure, tenants who have a full lease can continue to occupy the home until the end of the lease period. Those with a month-to-month lease or no lease at all have to be given at least 90 days notice to move. The only way that a person with a full lease can have their lease terminated is if the new owners intend to move in and occupy the home as their primary residence. In that instance the 90 day notice would apply.

  16. The bank has an agreement with the landlord about the loan not you. If I were you I would stop paying the landlord as he doesn't want to bring the place out of foreclosure. If you really like the place contact the bank after they tell you it is in foreclosure and see about buying it at the current market price ( not what idiot landlord owed )

From what I understood (from our neighbor) the condos have already been foreclosed. I'm going to talk to him again today to see if he still has the letter that he got from the bank so I can read it for myself. He told me it said something about something happening in February but I'm not sure what... and he got the letter like I said about 2 months ago

  17. Last week, we found out that our condo has been foreclosed for about 2 months. We rented from the guy that owned this condo. We tried to contact him but he isn't returning our calls or voicemails. We found out the condo has been foreclosed from our neighbor who got a letter in the mail from the bank (that was TO the landlord, but he opened it anyway). The neighbor said the landlord came clean w/ him about the foreclosure & told him he doesn't care if he stays there until the bank notifies him to leave..

We have been paying rent to our landlord even AFTER the condo had been foreclosed but we pay just by depositing the money in his account monthly.. (we've been doing this for 2 years) we dont have a written lease/agreement so I know we probably won't be able to get any of that money back since we won't be able to really prove that we made the payments. We have receipts from his bank but I don't know if that's enough. We also won't be getting our deposit back I guess since there's no record of that...

But we're not really worried about what we've paid the past 2 months so I'm just wondering, could we just stay at this condo until the bank notifies us we have to leave or is that illegal? The other 6 tenants that were renting from the same landlord (all condos got foreclosed) say that they are all staying in their condos until someone tells them to leave but I don't want to get in trouble for it because we will be living here for free and that just doesn't seem right.

When the bank finds out we are still here, will they notify us and give us 30 days to leave?? And will we end up OWING the bank if we decide to stay here until the bank evicts us? I just don't want anything to become "public record" or anything be on my husband's credit (even though the bank doesn't have his social security number or any information on him) because he has excellent credit.

    Someone please help!! :(

  18. I will probably recieve my EAD around the time I have my interview (Dec 16th) or hopefully before...
