  1. My fiance has his interview scheduled for 16th October in London. We were browsing flights from Edinburgh to Orlando where I live and found this amazing holy grail flight, 211£, one way no stops on 30th October. It is the last of this flight from the airline until like April and all other flights are like at least double the price and much longer travel time. Is it too big of a risk to book this flight without knowing exactly when we will have visa in hand?

That is an awesome price for airfare....but, I would err on the side of caution. There is no guarantee that your fiance would have his visa in hand by that date. I would wait until after the interview just to be safe.

  2. Thanks! :-)

  4. Most likely, it will not be a problem. I took my husband to Canada for a day trip (before he was my husband), just to see the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. He had no problem coming back into the US. The customs officer will ask you the "nature of your trip"....just tell him/her that you are just going over to spend the day at the "falls". Going to the Canadian side for a few hours or a day is not uncommon, and is perfectly acceptable. If you have any doubts, explain the situation to the customs officer BEFORE you cross over into Canada. Make sure your parents have all of their documents and proof of their return flight with them, and they should be fine. Then....go and enjoy your day at the Falls!! :-)

  5. I'm happy to report that my husband finally got his Green Card in the mail last Saturday (April 27th). We filed for AOS back in August of last year. At first, it seemed like things were moving along quite speedily, as we got a biometrics appointment fairly quickly, followed by receiving the EAD/AP card in October. I had every reason to think that things would keep moving at a nice pace. However, the months came and went very slowly. Every once in awhile I would check the status of the application on the USCIS website, only to find that nothing had been updated since August when the application packet was first received. I wasn't sure if I should start worrying or not, or whether or not I should try to call someone to see what was going on with the application. BUT...I fought off the urge to do any of those things and just kept believing that if USCIS/Homeland Security needed anything from us, they would let us know. Finally, the waiting paid off and we received the "Welcome to the United States" letter on 4/25/13, followed by the Green Card 2 days later. There was no interview and no RFE's.

All this to say...if you filed in August and you haven't heard a single word from USCIS....don't panic. Just keep waiting (as patiently as you can)....it shouldn't be too long now. :-)

  6. I certainly understand your frustration. We filed for my husband's AOS in August 2012 also. According the the USCIS website (as of today), it still says that the status of his application is in the "acceptance" phase. Our case was also sent to Missouri. I have not called anyone yet, because I have read other posts that say it could take as long as 9 months. I do, however, feel a bit concerned that it appears to still be in the beginning phase. But then again, I think that this is unlikely, since it took no time to get his appointment for his biometrics, and then he received his EAP/AP card in October....so perhaps the website has not been updated when our case has been viewed/processed.... I don't know. I'll give it one more month and then, I will start making calls.

  7. We sent our application for AOS, EAD and AP in August (2012)to the Chicago Lockbox - I got text messages about 5 days later indicating that all applications had been received. My husband then went for his biometrics appointment in Buffalo and we received combined EAD/AP card the middle of October. Since then, we have heard absolutely NOTHING. When I check the USCIS website, it says that it is still in the "acceptance" phase, and then this is what it says: "On August 10, 2012, your fingerprint fee was accepted and we have mailed you a notice describing how we will process your case. Please follow any instructions on this notice. Your case is being processed at our NATIONAL BENEFITS CENTER location. You will be notified by mail when a decision is made, or if the office needs something from you."

As far as I know, we did not receive any additional notice describing how our case would be processed. Is it normal for cases to be sent the the National Benefits Center?? I thought they went to a local office (ours would be Buffalo, NY).

It is now the middle of February....should I be concerned??? I keep thinking that if they needed anything, I would get a letter, or something, right???

I would appreciate any advice. Thank you!! :-)

  9. If you want an accurate list of all the forms and documents that you need to start your I-129F process, go to the top of the page and click on "Guides"....then scroll down to where it says, "Guides if you are engaged". Be sure to read the K-1 Visa Guide and K-1 Visa tips. I printed them out and used them as a checklist when I filed. These will help to answer the majority of your questions. It will likely take you a little while to gather all the supporting documentation. There is also at least one form (I can't remember which one now) that will require your fiancee's signature. My fiance was in Scotland, and I mailed it to him and he mailed it back to me. So...there will be some parts of the "gathering process" that will take a bit of time. Once I had a pretty good understanding of the process and started getting everything together....I would say that it took me about a month. It might take less time....maybe a bit more....depending on how quickly you can get what you need. Don't skip any steps....it will only make the process that much longer. We were approved in a little less than 4 months and we received no RFE's. Best of luck to you!! :-)

  10. Hello VJers,

I've a question regarding vaccination records. While we haven't yet received our NoA2, we're trying to prepare. My fiance (England) is trying to get his history of vaccination records as a child, but keeps running into a dead end. They keep telling him they simply can't find them. Is this going to be a problem when it comes to his medical exam at Knightsbridge? Thank you for any advice you can offer.

    Erinn

Actually, your fiance can go to his doctor and request titres. This is blood work that will determine if he has antibodies in his system that show immunity. He would only have these antibodies if he has been vaccinated in the past. In the case of chicken pox (varicella), if he has ever had chicken pox, the antibodies will show up in the blood. If he remembers having chicken pox, I believe he only needs to give the year to the doctor at Knightsbridge, and she will mark it on his vaccination form. My fiance had to have titres drawn and the only problem we had was that his GP's office staff didn't quite understand why he needed them, and were a little difficult to deal with. Eventually, they worked with him, and we got what we needed. Good luck!

  11. Just a silly question....

I read on the London Embassy info page that when a visa is approved, it takes anywhere from 24 hrs to 1 week for the beneficiary to receive it. Does it ever take longer than that????

The reason I ask is that my fiance had his interview in London on the 8th of November, and he was a approved. With the above information in mind, I went ahead and booked his flight to the US for November 20th, thinking that I was giving ample time for the visa to arrive. As of today, he still has not received his visa, and so he called the Embassy. They told him it could take 10 days before they send it to the courier. I'm not sure if that means just 10 days, or if it means 10 BUSINESS days. At any rate...I'm feeling just a slight bit of panic today in thinking that I may have jumped the gun in booking his flight for the 20th.

If you have received your K-1 visa from the Embassy in London, I would love to know about your experience.

    Thanks!!

  12. Matthew's interview was at 10 AM, also....he was in line by 9 AM and they let him in by 9:15 AM. But...I'm sure 9:30 would be fine. He said that once he was inside the embassy it was "crazy". He said the waiting area was packed with people. Even though his appointment was at 10 AM, his number wasn't called until 11:45. Overall, he said everyone was very friendly, and he didn't mind waiting. Best of luck to you!!!

  13. Wishin-N-Hopin: You must be so excited! The 8th is right around the corner. Are you going to do an embassy review? I'll be looking for it!! Good luck to your man!! We're almost there!!!!

Yes...we are excited, and a little nervous, too. I keep reading the London Consulate reviews, and for the most part, it seems that things go fairly smoothly for people, so I'm hoping for the same for Matthew. So...yes, I will definitely be posting a review. :)

I wish you all the best for the rest of the process...the two of you have certainly had your share of obstacles...I hope it all goes smoothly now. :)

  14. hello guys we got approved on 23 rd of sep and today is 8th of oct almost 15 days now and the NVC didnt recieve it yet. Is there a problem should i worry ? because i ve seen it usually takes about 3 to 4 days for them to recieve it but thats not the case with me ? dunno why? did it happen to anybody here applying for k1 visa?

No....you should not worry. It takes at least 15 BUSINESS days (so give them 3 full weeks to process everything). Good luck with the rest of your journey!!! :)

  15. I use the Pennytalk card to call my fiance in Scotland (it only costs me 1 cent per minute to talk to him). I just looked at the website and it says it would cost 8.9 cents per minute to call Nigeria. I don't know if that's a better rate than what you currently have, or not. You can go to http://www.pennytalk.com and take a look at it. There really are no hidden fees. I pay 40 cents to connect and then 1 cent per minute after that. I think they take 99 cents per month as a maintenance fee. You can put money on it from a credit or debit card on the website (you have to set up the account there). But then everytime you use the card, it will tell you how much money you still have on it. When it gets down to $5.00 or less, it will ask if you want to recharge the card. You can do it on the phone with the stored credit/debit card information. It has been a godsend for my fiance and I. I could never have been able to afford to talk to him as much if I had continued with other calling cards I had tried. I have been very satisfied with the service and I have no complaints about it at all. I hope it is something that will work for you. Best wishes! :)
