Hi Everyone,

I just thought I would pass along the good news. My wife, Ann, had her naturalization interview yesterday and her application has been approved! We are just waiting now on a letter from USCIS with the place/date/time of the oath ceremony. Thanks to everyone for all of their advice and insights throughout this and all of the other seemingly interminable immigration processes over the years.

The interview is going to be at the Fairfax location on Prosperity Avenue near the Dunn Loring Metro Station. We had to wait almost a week after the e-mail status update for the physical letter to arrive, so you will probably be receiving it shortly.

I don't think you have anything to worry about: you seem to have a pretty solid list of documents. Our packages tend toward overkill simply because I am a former Federal auditor and tend to think in terms of worst case scenarios.

Thanks for the reply regarding the N-600 versus simply getting a passport. Yep, we definitely know that he becomes a citizen at the moment that Ann does. This is something my wife and I have continually gone back and forth on since neither one of us are big fans of giving USCIS any more money at this point than we absolutely have to. It's funny that your reply would come when it did, since just that evening we were discussing it again. I think as the fateful day approaches, we will probably have more clarity on the direction we want to go.

Looks like a pretty good list of documents; we also included leases and property titles as well where my wife and I were both named. In regard to the payment amount, I think you may have incorrectly typed the amount. You state that you are sending a check for $668. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be enough. The total should be $680 ($595 application fee and $85 biometrics fee).

When we were doing removal of conditions for Ann and my stepson, there was a long delay followed by a letter in the mail scheduling my stepson for another biometrics appointment. Because of that and the considerable delay, we scheduled an Infopass appointment at the Washington Field Office. The folks there indicated that second appointments are often scheduled due to the first set of prints having in some way been defective, making it impossible to process them. My stepson tends to have very "moist" fingers and palms, and has always presented a challenge when being fingerprinted.

Great trove of evidence; very similar to what we submitted to remove conditions for my wife and stepson. We also included affidavits from a couple of friends and family regarding their knowledge of our life together as a couple (overkill, perhaps, but we have always liked to make it EASY for the government reviewer). The coolest addition to the package: a copy of my wife's ultrasound ... she was pregnant with our baby boy when we started the process.

Both Ann and I are really big on following instructions, so we made sure that the signatures were original (so far it has paid off: no RFE's yet). I am really good with government forms (worked for the Federal government as an auditor for many years) and so completed the forms and transcribed what she wanted to say in the letter of intent, with some editing, and then sent the documents by e-mail. She signed off on everything and then sent to me via FedEx the original signed documents as well as originals of other documents we needed (passport size photos, birth certificates, copy of annulment petition, decision, and decree of finality, annotated marriage certificate, etc.).

When you submitted the N-400, you had the option of completing a G-1145, which would have allowed you to receive an e-mail/text update indicating that your package had been accepted for processing. You can establish an account online at USCIS.GOV by following the menu path Tools --> Check My Case Status. You will see an option to register. After you receive the receipt number you can add your case to your account's portfolio. You will then have the option to request for that case a text update, e-mail update, or both, going forward.

In our case, the embassy did inquire as to Ann's parental rights over her son. She had received a finalized decree of nullity that awarded her full custody of my stepson, so that was easily addressed. HOWEVER, when we were passing through passport control in Cebu, we had to produce the decree, a copy of the annotated marriage certificate (in the Philippines they annotate the marriage certificate to reflect the annulment), and a copy of my stepson's birth certificate before they would let him on the plane.

I am hoping and praying that the waiting time has not completely destroyed what you have together. Ann and I not only had to deal with the K-1/K-2 visa process, but had to go through the less than transparent Philippine court system to obtain an annulment for Ann before the visa process could even begin. Two years later, we knew it had all been worth it when she, her son, and I stepped off the plane together at Dulles International Airport. The waiting was hard and there were at times upsets and disappointments and trials, but we soldiered through. We have now been happily married for two and a half years, we are active in our local Eastern Orthodox Church, our son is doing well in school and flourishing, and we are expecting a new addition to the family in February 2014. I just want you and your fiancee to know that true love and patience will be rewarded if you keep your mind and heart set on why you started on the journey in the first place. May God bless you both, wherever life takes you.

P.S. Married life is also no endless garden of delights ... it takes a great deal of commitment, hard work, and understanding as well.

There's usually a CBP officer directing people which line to get in. Tell them your situation and they'll direct you to the line they want you in.

I traveled with my wife and step kids from Vietnam. There were a few dozen people in the visitor's line, but only a few people in the citizen's line. I told the CBP officer who was directing traffic that I was a citizen and the people with me were a K1 and two K2's. He sent us to the citizen's line, which was a lot faster.

If the CBP officer asks her a question that she doesn't understand then feel free to translate. If she understands then let her respond on her own.

Most K1's are not given a hard time by the CBP when entering the US. The most common problems they encounter, like immigrant intent, don't apply to a K1.

Exactly our experience at Dulles International Airport. I accompanied my fiancee and stepson from the Philippines to the U.S. Upon arrival, I asked a CBP officer into which line we should go and she directed us to the U.S. Citizens line. Except for a few questions, no headaches at all. The only question that tripped her up was the first one (she was nervous): Where are you from? She responded "Calamba" (that is her barangay ... neighborhood) and then responded "Cebu City" ... the officer just looked at her passport and then at her and said, "And Cebu is in what country?" She stammered, "Philippines, Philippines!!!"

My wife and stepson entered on K-1 and K-2 visas, respectively, and we did not receive any welcome letters. We did receive the welcome pamphlet directing us to the USCIS website for the extensive welcome booklet/presentation.

That is pretty normal. My wife and stepson both received notifications the day of the interview that their greencards had entered production. About two or three days later, we received the same message again. The status then changed to "post-decision activity" ... we received the greencards a few days later.

Congratulations!!! Ours arrived on November 25th as well. Wonderful way to celebrate Thanksgiving!!!

My wife, Ann, and stepson, Daine, had their adjustment of status (AOS) interviews on November 16th at the Washington DC Field Office in Fairfax, Virginia. Everything went very well and the adjudicating officer told us that she was recommending approval of the green cards and that we should receive them in two to four weeks. On the same day, our online status was updated by USCIS to indicate that the cards had been ordered into production. Interestingly, we also had another "update" on November 21st, but nothing appeared to have changed. Perhaps a "touch", or maybe an indication it has been mailed? We shall see ...
