  1. Haha. Yeah, when requesting the IIN, make sure you say "Invoice ID (or Identification) Number". Most operators don't know the same lingo we VJers use. I was so tempted to say SIF and CC on the phone with the operator the other day, but held back since I knew they wouldn't know what the f*** I was talking about laughing.gif

He figured it out eventually, I had no idea what it was i looked all over but I couldn't find it. I wasn't sure if it was even iin or 2n because people capitalize the I"s.

  2. Just a note, NVC works from 7:30am - 12 midnight, that includes operators and those that review files and send out emails and such, so they weren't technically closed when you closed. But who knows how hard they work once the last hour is left of work.

You should be getting that first email from NVC soon then if you gave emails yesterday. It was 3 business days after I got my case number and gave email addresses for my husband and I to get that initial email. But by the time we had gotten it, we had already submitted the CoA form, paid the AOS, and emailed the AOS.

Since you just sent the DS-3032, it should be accepted early next week and then the IV bill will appear.

Um, wow, very awkward conversation. You think the operator would have gotten the hint that you wanted to add the email addresses without having the two awkward silences. headbonk.gif

There where more awkward silences after that too.

I asked him if he can give me my iin # and he asked "what's an iin?"

I was like umm I don't know you tell me.

  3. You didn't need to wait to pay your AOS bill. You could have sent in your DS-3032 as soon as you got that initial email package from NVC with your case info and the DS-3032.

I only called in yesterday to add our email's to the account information and I got the iin at that time. Checked in on the payment portal and was eligible to pay the AOS. We haven't actually received any emails from the NVC as they were pretty much closed since I called in at 11 eastern.

So I emailed our DS-3032 under the assumption that the packet was already prepared since the AOS payment was available.

And the person i talked to on the phone at the NVC just made the whole conversation awkward.

CS rep: How may i help you?

me: I was told we can add email addressees to our account so you can contact us, is that correct.

    CS rep: That is correct.

    ....Awkward silence....

me: Can we do that now?

CS rep: You can add whatever information you like.

    ....Awkward silence....

    me: are you ready?

  4. It's more than a little heartbreaking seeing all of those June, July and August NOA1 dates in the last 15 approvals list. I just hit 3 months yesterday it's been absolute torture. I read this thread everyday and people like marjus's girl, giamimigio and a few others have really been a help to me. I just thought you all should know that. In real life, I just get the constant question of when or what's the status and it's not really helpful at all.

7/9 priority date, 231 days, got 1st touch since 11/29 yesterday.

With cases like ours being posted, the timeline estimates have been pretty much rendered useless for the rest of you.

  5. are you going to do the state via turbotax as well? I am done with the Fed, but not sure what to do about the state.

I am going to let turbo tax do its thing and then if I can get the ITIN in time I will file the state, otherwise I guess I will file an extension until i get ITIN.

I am due too much money back to want to wait 3-6 months more to get it. So I am hoping to get filed and my returns as soon as possible.

  6. If you make the election to treat your wife as a Resident Alien then you should be able to claim any deductions and credits that other citizens are entitled to claim.

This is what I thought, but i saw a post about it earlier so i wanted to see if anyone thought differently.

Thank you for your help. I think i can finish up the Fed and start on the State now.

  7. I am assuming that the interest was earned by your wife in Taiwan. If you are going to file a joint return with your wife by electing to treat her as a Resident Alien for tax purposes then the interest income from Taiwan should be included on your tax return. The interest income would not qualify to be excludable under the Foreign Earned Income exclusion. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion usually only applies to income for personal services.

Thank you, I didn't know that it didn't qualify as excludable.

I also saw someone say that you couldn't take the Making work pay credit, however, turbotax is applying the credit. Just wondering if anyone has the actual answer to this?

  8. thanks a lot for the link! It asks for a SSN or ITIN for the spouse if you are filing jointly...how are we supposed to provide that if we have not received our ITIN yet, and probably wont receive it until after tax season? Do we just put NRA there? This stuff is confusing.

Haven't quite figured that one out yet.

I guess either you file an extension, or you do married filing separately and then do an amended tax return after you get her SSN.

I am really hoping i don't have to do separately because then I am going to have to pay in.

  9. Somewhere, that same document or the 540 it says that you have to filed married if you file married on fed. however, it also says that you can do married filing separately even if you filed married filing joint for federal.

Though if you spouse has no income then you will only benefit from filing joint. If you file separately i would assume you would amend it when you get her social security number.

  10. This is for CaliforniaGuy, and any other California residents. I posted it in one of the tax threads, but wanted to make sure you saw it.

For all the California residents here is a link stating that the Non-resident alien can be treated as a resident similar to the federal rules. (1st page, right column half way down) Kind of strange that they don't list it on the 540 form, but they do list it on the 540NR form, seeing as once it applies you won't be using the 540NR form.

  11. hey people bringing up this question on how they will process 36000 applicants in one month etc etc have not done their home work. this is not one service center i think both CSC and TSC are splitting the work load. If you also check the below link and select CSC you will see that

CSC completed almost 55,000 applications in Sep, 2009 and recently

CSC Completed almost 30,000 applications in Oct, 2010 so don't be so surprised. this is nothing new to them as some people are complaining.

    http://dashboard.uscis.gov/index.cfm?formtype=4&office=2&charttype=1

see the second graph, the first one is national, the second one is CSC specific.

55,000 is an anomaly. They seem to average 20,000 a month. That is why I believe how quickly we get approved will depend on how many cases were transferred to CSC.
