  1. You need to have her I-94 corrected at a Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Deferred Inspection site. Only they can change what is in the database. The problem is that the I-94 Departure record she has in hand, for whatever reason, doesn't match what CBP has entered into their system and the SSA (all offices) have to enter what is on the I-94 Departure record.

It is a royal pain but the only way to get it fixed. OK, it's not really that bad (if the CBP office is close to where you live) but it turns something that should take 10-15 days into a 5-6 week wait.

I was hoping it wasn't this. Makes sense though. Thanks!

  2. As you appear to be linving in a rather large city, try another SSA office. Use the I-94, passport and take her birthcertificate just in case. DO NOT mention the marriage and get the SSN in her maiden name first. Then you can go back and change it with the marriage certificate (notice I did not say copy or certified copy as the SSA wants to see the official document and they will make a copy). The most important thing is the number as that allows your spouse to get all kinds of benefits and the name is not that important. Think about how many people you have shown YOUR SSC to over the years. I bet it is not many. The number is what is important and then she can change her name and have the "NOT AUTHORIZED TO WORK WITHOUT DHS AUTHORIZATION" removed when she gets her GC.

    Good luck,

    Dave

We went to a smaller office in Rome, GA. And we filed for the SSC with her maiden name, knowing we will change the name later, without any success. Perhaps this next time we'll go to a different office, and hopefully the clerk will be more helpful with getting the card.

  3. Hello VJers! My spouse and I had a problem when we visited the social security office: Her name wasn't able to be pulled up in their system. I figure it may have been a data entry issue, so her name is incorrectly spelled. I asked the clerk to try different spelling with her name or moving the surname into the last name, but the clerk said the i-94 should be the name exactly as in their system.

I was told by the clerk that we'll have to go somewhere else to change her name, so that we can try to get her SSN after that. She mentioned a department that slips my memory.

Was she correct when she told me we'll have to go elsewhere with a name correction?

  4. Since when have we so willingly given up our rights. You are a US citizen returning to your country. The only things you have to do is permit them to verify your customs form vs. what you have and show proof of citizenship. I really wish the US government would read the Constitution. Land of the oppressed and home of the timid.

You can do this, but be expected to be held for a LONG time.

  5. I'm looking forward to going back to see my love but have been pretty stressed lately about this whole process... I just dont understand what kind of timing they are using?!?! My NOA1 date is Aug 3rd but STILL not NOA2??? There are so many people who have filled AFTER me and got theirs.. Is it not first come first serve???

According to Igor's list, only one petition after the 3rd of August has been approved.

  6. Thanks, I appreciate your response. Sometimes you just need a good cry, ya know? It's cathartic.

The stupid thing about this though is that even if his visa was approved tomorrow, he couldn't move here until March 20th because thats exactly 90 days before the day we're planning the wedding. Long distance is just so damn hard!! :crying:

Why don't you have a quiet wedding in a courthouse if your visa is ready before the 20th of March?

  7. It has been over 30 days since my petition was last touched. I think that I have only seen 2 NOA2's for July filers anywhere. Is there something wrong with July? Are we some kind of pariah? Don't worry, I'm not all that whacked out; I only wish that there was some kind of movement.

I really wish I had filed in May/June. Oh well. I'll be happy if I get my fiancee here by December.
