  1. Hi! my situation is, my husband is in the air force and he is stationed in Italy. we've been married for 6 months. I am leaving on september for Italy to be with my husband, we will be staying there for more or less 2 years. I was wondering if I can apply for citizenship while im abroad on military orders? if anyone knows or if anyone experienced this kindly LET ME KNOW. Thank you! :)

  2. Thanks everyone for replying! Yes y'all are right, I don't need the re-entry permit. My concern now is if I can apply for naturalization because I will be living overseas with my husband on military orders. i've read many threads that said i can apply for it once I get to Italy, but i had an infopass yesterday and the immigration officer I talked to said i cant apply. I asked him so many things, then he told me to wait and i waited like 10 minutes.. He had to research and all that, then like towards the end of our conversation its like he was telling me that I dont need the re-entry permit coz I can apply for citizenship. ahh its so confusing i swear. :(

And um I will be staying in AVIANO ITALY. I think its near Sicily or something lol I'm so excited! aha yal can visit :)

  3. I should note that I just got done reading the PDF for the I-131 form and while it doesn't state that a re-entry permit is necessary for someone who is traveling overseas by order of the US Government, it does have a section on expiration dates for people who are traveling overseas by order of the US Government. So by inference, yes, a re-entry permit is necessary for you.

That said, the PDF also indicates that you can file the form electronically, however these should be noted:

I am a LPR and need to travel abroad. Can I file my Form I-131 to get a reentry permit while I am outside the United States?

No. You cannot file a Form I-131 to obtain a reentry permit unless you are physically present in the United States when you file the form. You should file your Form I-131 no fewer than 60 days before you intend to travel abroad.

If I file Form I-131 to get a reentry permit while I am in the United States, will USCIS deny the Form I-131 if I leave the United States while the form is still pending?

We recommend that you file Form I-131 while you are in the United States. However, you do not have to be in the United States for USCIS to approve your Form I-131 and issue a reentry permit to you if your biometrics have been obtained. You can indicate on your Form I-131 that you want USCIS to send your reentry permit to a U.S. Embassy, or consulate, or a DHS office overseas, so you can pick it up from one of those facilities.

If I file Form I-131 for a reentry permit while I am in the United States, can I submit my biometrics while I am outside the United States?

No. When you file your Form I-131 to obtain a reentry permit, USCIS will notify you when to appear at a designated Application Support Center (ASC) to obtain your biometrics. You must provide your biometrics at the ASC while you are in the United States. If you leave the United States before you provide your biometrics, USCIS may deny your application.

This means you may need to delay your departure and join your husband overseas if you don't want to do as mimimelo suggested and try for an expedited US citizenship while overseas with your husband.

HI MIKE! I called the USCIS and i was able to talk to an immigration officer. He told me that I don't need the re-entry permit since I am travelling abroad on military orders. He just told me to always bring copy of my husband's orders all the time. But thank you for replying!

  4. hi everyone! i have a problem. i got my green card weeks ago, and im going to travel outside of the country. my husband is stationed in italy (airforce), and i have the approved command sponsorship. we will be staying in italy for 2 years. my question is, do i need to apply for re-entry permit? isnt bein on military orders and on base considered US soil? i am leaving on thursday so i really need your help. if anyone knows please let me know thank you

  5. Hi, everyone. I was wondering if its okay to scan my green card so I can keep a copy of it. Plus coz the embassy is requiring me to send them a copy of my green card. So, is it okay to scan it? when i received my card it came with an envelope and it was written "to protect the green card from wireless communication something something". so yea I know this question is silly but I just wana make sure I won't mess up with my green card. PLEASE REPLY ANYONE. thank you!

  6. "Q. I am a spouse of a member of the U.S. Armed Forces and have filed a Petition to Remove the Conditions on Residence (Form I-751), while on an overseas military assignment with my spouse. Will my Form I-751 be adjudicated while we are overseas or will it remain pending until my spouse and I return to the U.S.?

    A. If USCIS determines that you have submitted sufficient evidence to demonstrate a bona fide marital union, USCIS may proceed with adjudication regardless of your geographical location. If USCIS is unable to determine your eligibility for the immigration benefit, USCIS will withhold adjudication until you and your spouse are able to be interviewed within a USCIS Field Office to establish your eligibility."

Not sure if this answers your question but here is the link with more Q/A's from the USCIS website section geared towards military and their families.

Hi, DLUKE. Actually i asked the immigration officer, they told me that I need to get an appointment before i leave for europe in september. So i was wondering if I can go ahead and file or just file it even if im oversease?

  7. Hi everyone! I got my green card 2 weeks ago, its a conditional green card. So removal of conditions will be done before my 2nd year anniversary, right? How about if my husband is in the military.. My husband is stationed in Europe, and I will be going to live with him in Europe for 2 years. When I had my interview, the adjudicator said that before I leave for Europe, I can go make an appointment and the immigration will help me with the removal of conditions. My question is, is there anyone here who knows if I can file for lifting of conditions even if i just received my green card because I will be going abroad on military orders? Anyone who knows, kindly reply. Thank you!
