  1. Hi,

I'm finding conflicting info about that: if I apply for a passport right after oath ceremony, right there with my fresh new certificate, will they still take the certificate away?

so, applying at the ceremony is no different than applying at the post office?

I've read in few places that applying during oath ceremony is the only time when you will actually get to keep your certificate, they verify and make copy on site so I don't have to part with the original.

    thanks!

  2. Thanks all!

I think my office does judicial ceremonies, but I'll just ask the officer during interview. Not a big deal either way, I know it sounds funny talking about name change like that but I've been using different first name than in my documents since forever, so it's ok either way if I get it officially changed or not.

  3. Hi,

I'm going to have naturalization interview soon. I filled N400 without name change, but now I'm starting to consider maybe I should change my name after all. I've been using an English version of my given name for over a decade now in the US, and I might want to finally make it official.

Did anyone have experience in trying to amend N400 during the interview?

I gave them the name I'm using on the form already, as "other names used".

I don't really care if it delays the process or not, I just don't want to make it more complicated.

    thanks!

  4. well, my university does sponsor green cards, but it's unlikely I'll stay here after graduation, it's Harvard, veeeery HARD to stay in, and anyway usually you're supposed to look for postdock in different place than you got PhD. So, I could wait until I move in to postdock position, but I would like to try getting a green card now , before I graduate.

I do have masters already, unlike most grad students, that's why I would like to try with GC.

  5. Hi;

after reading about different types of GC available for professionals, I'm little confused.

I don't want to use sponsor, and I don't have job offer, so I need to be able to self petition.

I think there are two categories where I would have a chance:

EB-1 Outstanding Researcher/Professor or National Interest Waiver/Extraordinary Ability

I do have masters degree, I'm in program to get PhD, field is chemistry and synthetic biology. I do have few, but not too many publications, several conference presentations and talks. I'm form Czech Republic, so there is not sooo many people from my country around using up limits (like some Asia or South America countries). I'm currently on F visa.

Anybody has experience with similar situation?

I know I can get attorney, and probably I will do it eventually, but I want objective advice now. I feel like if I go to the attorney, she or he will say sure, you have chance for green card, just to get me to hire him.

    Thank you!

    tea.
