  1. My bride came from Canada to the US at the end of March. We were married on March 30th on the beach! She filled out the papers to get her Social Security card for herself and her daughters. She was told by the SS office that now that she is married she can not get the card here in Indiana. She will have to contact the INS to get a card and that her 9 year old daughter can not get a card until she is old enough to work! Has anyone had any experience with this? I can not put them on my insurance at work until they have Social Security numbers. I am at a loss as to what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could the governments make this any harder??

    Thanks!

    Eric

  2. basically your fiancee has 6 months (or is it 180 days) to "activate" the K1 visa (ie, use the visa to cross over into the US) from the "date of issue" (that is the day the visa is actually printed onto your passport...may end up being a few days later than the actual interview date).

once you have "activated" the K1 (ie, used it to cross into the US), you then have 3 months (or is it 90 days) to get married. then, at your leisure, you can file for AOS. during the period in between which you are married and until your fiancee gets her green card, or at the very least, her travel document (aka advance parole), she has to remain in the US. if she doesn't remain in the US after "activating" the k1, and getting married, she will not be allowed back in until she has the appropriate spousal visa (which are taking 1-1.5 yrs in canada because MTL is backed up right now).

it seems currently travel documents are taking about 3 months (until someone actually has it in their hand), and green cards: anywhere from 4 months +

    hope that helps. good luck!

it does seem like getting the visa, holding onto it, and "activating" it after her teaching is complete (within 6 months of the issue date) is probably the best bet. in the meantime, i don't think she can visit you in the US. :( once she's here, marrying, and filing for AOS + EAD + AP would be the next appropriate steps.

Thank you all for your responses. It looks like we are going to have to change our wedding plans. At least the approval is over! There has to be something good about all of this. Wouldn't you know they would get to the approval stage a couple months before we were ready. Who says they aren't fast :)

Thanks again one all all for your help. It was greatly appreciated.

  3. Hope someone can help! My fiance from Canada just had her medicals and interview today. She is approved to come to the US. We were planning on being married this March. She is a teacher in Canada so she had planned on going back to Canada for 3 months to finish out the school year before moving here to the States. She was told today that once we are married, she can not go back into Canada for 2 years for ANYTHING! She can not even go back to move her things here.

We had the plans already made. Has anyone else heard of this? Is there anything we can do?

She has the plane tickets to come down in March and her return in April.

Any ideas - short of changing all the wedding plans?

How long is the approval good for?

Thank you for your help in advance.

    Eric

  4. In the DS-156 form that my fiance needs to fill out - under question 4 for Marital status it wants to know if you are now married or have ever been married. She has been married in Canada twice (and divorced). There is not room to put two names or dates on this page. Has anyone ever come across that before? Does she just put the last husband down?

It is getting closer and we don't want to do anything that will slow this down any more than it is!

    Thanks!

  5. Hi,

Provinces differ, for instance if it is with Alberta a person can buy coverage for 3 months. However, keep in mind that regardless of what the rules are for her province, if the child actually had to go to the hospital in the U.S., what they charge and what would be paid for by health care in Canada are probably miles apart. You should consider buying U.S. Health insurance for that month.

I'm going to move your thread from K1 procedures to the Canada forum, as that is Canada specific and you will get more response, it's also helpful if you can tell us which province they are from.

Yes, she is from Alberta. What is the link to the Canada forum? I am sure there are a lot of things on that forum that we need to know also. I have only come across the US portals.

Never mind - I found it!!

    Thanks!

  6. When the Visa is finally approved - (hopefully soon), how soon after my fiance and her children come to the US will she lose her Canadian Health Care? We are planning on being married as soon as she arrives here in the US. I know that I can put her and the children on my health care plan at work, but only after 30 days. She has a child who has brittle bone disease so many things could happen in the first 30 days that may require a hospital stay.

How soon after arriving can they apply for a Social Security Card?

The journey is long - but so worth it!

  7. Hi and welcome :)

Touches mean someone has updated the status on your case (ie: someone is using the file) you would see this on the case status page you are viewing at the USCIS webpage.

NOA1 is the receipt you received (Notice of Action)

NOA2 means your petition has been approved (looks just like the NOA1 - basically just the info on the notice is different).

Things you can do now, not much really except ensure she has proof of all of her vaccinations. You can see the age appropriate list at the panel physician's website, also gives other info on the medical, like what you have to bring.

Check out the VJ Wiki Canada page here: http://www.visajourney.com/wiki/index.php/Canada down at the bottom is a link to the package 3 - you will want to see if there are any documents on there that you don't have yet.

You can check out common terms used on VJ here Acronym Summary

    Good luck!

Thank you so much for your help all of you! The links are very informative. I have forwarded the links on to her so she can be ready. I sure hope they haven't forgotten us! It just seems like others have at least had some encouragement by this time. 64 days and counting since they reported receiving the petition - but who keeps track! :)

The Initial Review button is still blue though. No red buttons!!!

  8. I see several posts where on their timeline it says "touched." What is that? I know that it has something to do with your papers actually getting touched by a person - but how do you know when they do this? We sent in our papers for a K1 Visa on April 6. Did get the notice that it was processed on May 6. There have been no updates since that time. I check every day and have signed up for email and text notices. So far, nothing. Seems like such a long time with no updates. Is this normal? I am in the US and she is in Canada. Is there something else I should be doing?

Also, what is this NOA1 and NOA2?

Are there any other terms that would be helpful to know?

    Thanks!
