Another hurdle out of the way!! My husband and I had our AOS interview in Portland yesterday! We had originally thought it was going to be in Seattle, WA since we live in WA state....however two nights before our interview, as we were preparing, I happen to notice the appointment letter had the interview location as Portland...it was a fantastic surprise since we are only 20 minutes from Portland!
Anyway, we arrived about thirty minutes early. Our appointment was at 10:00am. There were only a few people in the room. They were all called pretty quickly and we were called withing about 10 minutes. The female officer thanked us for coming early and we followed her to her office.
The first question out of the gate was about our marriage certificate, she was curious that the wedding officiant was apparently Christian (something we didn't even realize). After asking my husband several questions about this, I finally got a chance to tell her that I found this person on the internet. We had to change our wedding plans several times due to AP so while all that was going on, I found someone who had a little bit of flexibility in wedding dates so I chose her.
She asked us to describe our wedding day and we of course pulled out the large photo album! She went through it and asked who everyone was.
and then, the rest of her questions started flying!
1. How did you meet?
2. What website?
3. She asked my husband if he has ever dated other women he met online?
4. She asked him, did you ever bring any other girls to Cyprus that you met online?
5. She asked about my daughter, her relationship with my husband, her age and who she stayed with when I made my trips over to Cyprus.
6. She asked about my prior marriage
7. Why did you divorce?
8. She asked about my ex's husband's friend who I co-sponsored at one point during our marriage
8. She asked what do you mean co-sponsor?
9. Did you and your husband live together up until the time you divorced?
10. How old is your daughter?
11. She asked my husband what he did for work in Cyprus?
13. How many times did I travel to see him? what were the dates?
14. She asked my husband if he is working? where at? what does he do?
15. She asked me if I know anyone else from my work place that went through this process?
16. She asked my husband how do you feel that she is older than you? (5 yrs) She pointed out that my ex-husband was also younger than me (4 yrs). Whatever!!
17. What does your family think of your marriage?
18. She asked me if I've met my husband's family?
She then said she had to do some research on the computer, but she would have an answer soon. As we were getting ready to pack up our things, she asked my husband if he had his EAD card with him. He gave it to her and she put it in a plastic bag and stuck it in our file and said, "this is a good sign that I am taking this." My husband asked her if he would be ok at his job if someone came to his employer asking for his EAD and she said "you'll be fine, they usually only take about 4 days to process". She asked us if we had any questions for her and she thanked us again for coming early. We left feeling pretty good, however we weren't sure that we were fully approved.
At about 5:01 pm, we got a text and email notice from USCIS. When I signed on, we had this wonderful message!
"On October 27, 2011, we ordered production of your new card. Please allow 30 days for your card to be mailed to you. If we need something from you we will contact you".... YAYYYY Best news ever!! And to top it off...my husband passed both his written and driving test as well!! We are feeling pretty darn good right now!!
One more thing...she asked us if we had any paperwork for her.....we gave her the following that contained both of our names: several utility bills, bank statement, medical, dental, and life insurance plans...she asked me if my husband was on my mortgage..I explained that he is not because it did not make sense to re-finance which is the only way to add him according to my mortgage company. She seemed fine with my answer.

Crazy questions that seem to fit the DL better than AOS ....lol.....Congratulations to you both and I am soooooo happy for you

Hey girl!! Good to see you on here!!
Suley said these questions were quite similar to those he had at his Embassy interview in Cyprus....I wasn't expecting most of these questions....none of them seemed to phase him since he has been the one having to go through the interviews!! Just happy it's over for awhile...although I am sure I will still stress until the Green Card is in his hands!! Hope you guys are doing ok...it's still shocking to me that you haven't heard anything! Crazy making for sure!

Today we received a text and email that our case was updated. I checked online at USCIS and found the following:
On September 9, 2011, we mailed you a notice that we certified our approval of this case and sent it to the appropriate appellate body for review. They will notify you directly when they make a final decision. If you move while this case is pending, follow the instructions provided in the notice and use our Change of Address online tool to update your case with your new address or call our customer service center at 1-800-375-5283.
I have done some searching and haven't found much about what this means exactly...my husband has not had his biometrics appt yet (this will occur Monday), so we were surprised to receive an update to our case...although it's not exactly a promising update! Any other experiences with this type of situation out there? From what I see in older posts, this happens occasionally and people go on to be approved, but not really sure what appellate body means and why there needs to be further checking. The other 2 applications (I485 & I765) remain in Initial Review.

Hello Suley & Tami, I submitted my packet same date as yours but I already had my biometrics last August 12th. Hope I could receive my EAD soon because I have a final interview with an employer on September 1st.
I hope you get your biometrics appointment soon! good luck to all of us!
Good luck to you guys!!!
We finally received our biometrics appt letter today! Hope the EAD doesn't take as long as it did to get this letter!!
-
oops..and I am in the wrong one! Guess it's still been helpful to see others that are waiting for their letter in the other categories!
-
Hey Suley and Tami, I'm in the same boat...I havent received my biometrics letter and I'm quite annoyed
Hopefully it comes in soon! Thanks for posting, made my husband and I feel better knowing there's another July Filer who hasnt gotten theirs yet, either.
"The USCIS works in mysterious ways..."
No worries...you guys are definitely not alone!!
We are getting a little paranoid...I might try to give them a call just to see if I can get some information. It's strange to see how some people get their appointment letter at the same time as their NOA1. I have no idea why things are always so inconsistent with USCIS...hopefully we all hear something this week!!

Still waiting...somewhat patiently for biometrics letter over here in Portland!
-
Still waiting on Bio-metrics letter...hoping it comes this week!!

Additional documents were not requested. He was given a blue sheet called a "Refusal Worksheet" It says "This office regrets to inform you that it is unable to issue a visa to you because you have been found ineligible to receive a visa under the folling section."
The box marked was section 221(g). And it says "Your case requires additional administrative processing" It further instructs us to check the embassy website.
Sounds like a denial, but not 100% sure.
Don't give up! This is the standard form...which tends to scare people to death due to it's ridiculous wording! AP is very normal and as hard as it is, you must just wait for them to finish their process. We went through it, if you read through many of the posts in this section, you will see you are in good company! Best of luck, it will all work out!!
-
YAYY!!! Congrats for you two!

If it's not showing up yet, it's probably too early. I would just keep checking...we filed in Cyprus and didn't have the option to check online unfortunately but we just called DOS once or twice a week.

My fiance also had AP for name checks in Washington DC...it took about 6 weeks! Best of luck to you guys!!!
-
YAYYYYYY!!! Congratulations!!! I knew it was just around the corner!!
Have a safe trip!!!
-
Congratulations!!!
It really is the best feeling ever once that approval finally comes through!! Best of luck and have a safe journey to the US!!
-
Congratulations!! Hope everything moves quickly from here on out!!

What an uplifting story!! Congrats!! I am so happy for you and your fiancee!!

hi! what is AP?when this happen?
Hello,
AP stands for "administrative processing" or can also be called "administrative review". My understanding is it can happen at any stage of the visa process. Generally speaking, it means further information is needed (more background checks, more documentation, field contact, etc). There is no specific time of completion from what we have found in our research. Although anyone from any country can be placed in AP, some experience is more often than others. My fiance is from Jordan and experienced it at both the Embassy level (he was luckily approved in about 6 days). Shortly after his approval however, the Embassy explained they did not want him to have troubles at the airport when he entered the US (he has common Arabic 2nd name)so he went back in AP so they could do Name Checks through the Dept of State in Wash. DC. That AP lasted about 6 weeks. There are several people on VJ that have waited months and longer and some get cleared within days. It's the difficult thing about it...never really knowing when that will happen.
-
Thank you so much everyone! We feel very lucky that our AP at both the Embassy level and in Wash. DC went by quickly...it really is the unknown that makes this part of the process so difficult...but what an amazing patience we have all had to experience in order to be with those we love so much.
-
My fiance just got the call from the Embassy!! Wash. DC name checks done!!! AP COMPLETED!! VISA IS READY!!! Omg, we are dancing all over the place!!!
Tons of prayers and positive thoughts have finally paid off!! Best of luck to the fellow VJ's still stuck in AP...we hope you all get great news soon as well!!
-
I think about it on a daily basis....if I could sell my home and actually make a profit instead of having to short-sale it due to this current market...and figure a way out to get all my pets there in one piece...I would be long gone...unfortunately, we have to do this first...so in the end we can have our dream business on the Mediterranean!!
-
Good luck and God's blessings to you!!
We are still waiting. It's going to be a month next week. But the hard part for me is that I really want to go see him since I haven't seen him in almost a year. We don't want to waste the money doing that when he could get out of AP any day. I think I could bear more if there was an actual end date. Oh well I waited 6months for the petition to be approved so guess I can wait for this too.
Hello!
We will be at one month next week as well! I just called DOS this morning to check on our status and was told our case was still pending AP at the Embassy. I told her I was confused as the Embassy replied to our email this week and said, "According to our records, your K-1 visa application is pending for a security clearance with the State Department." The DOS Visa officer said, "no, I don't see anything about that, unless the Embassy sent it yesterday, it may not be here yet." She went on to say that it shows that it is in review with a CO. Well, we have been thinking my fiance was undergoing name checks in DC, but now we are a little bit confused as to where the AP is actually pending. I called DOS a 2nd time just to get clarification...the next person told me that all they can see is that our case is pending AP...and that is all they have access to see in the system. She said they took away DOS Visa officer's ability to look at specific information about one year ago. So guess we just continue to wait...and hope someone is doing what the need to be doing!

I emailed the embassy today and they replied that they approved our co-sponsor. That is good news for me and my husband.
It took the embassy 3 months to review our new affidavit of support and instead of issuing the visa they put us in AP. It's very easy to lose patience when you are put into AP. You've already waited many months just to get to the interview. Now you must wait weeks, months, or longer in AP.
I think the length of time you spend in AP depends on the CO and what kinds of background checks they want done. That's why some people only spend a few weeks in AP and others spend months but I could be wrong.
That's great news on your co-sponsor situation!! Hopefully this means you will get your visa soon!! We are still waiting...and waiting...

So interestingly enough...we were approved after about 3 business days of AP....my fiance dropped off his passport last Friday at the Consular's request...she said it would be ready this week. Unfortunately, today my fiance got a call and was told that they will do name checks so we must wait a little while longer. She said not to worry, it was approved, however she told my fiance not to book tickets because she didn't know how long it would take. She explained to him that they want to make sure he doesn't have trouble when he enters the US (I assume with his name). So although we were very very lucky that AP moved quickly, we are back to the unknown waiting time. Crazy roller coaster ride...it's really unbelievable and we can be patient..for awhile....but why on earth do they not do name checks at some point during the 7 months since we started this process...they wait until we have been approved?!! Crazy system that does not make sense to me most of the time.
