  1. Hi all. I am a US citizen, and my husband is a permanent resident. We would like to try to have his father, a Malawian citizen, visit for a couple of weeks next summer. When writing an invitation letter, would it be better for me - the US citizen - to write it? Or my husband? Or does it even make a difference?

In the letter we will state that we will be paying for his airfare/accomodation, etc. We also intend on sending an affadavit of support as well as our financial documents. However, he only makes the equivalent of about $85.00/month. Does he even stand a chance of getting approved if he only makes that amount, despite the documents we'll be sending?

  3. I called the service center on Monday this week as it had been just over 5 months with no updates or touches. Unfortunately, they wouldn't give me any information as I was not the applicant and my husband was not with me at the time to speak with them. But, not even 20 minutes later we received a text and email that he was approved and card production had been ordered. I guess they had just forgotten about us! laughing.gifkicking.gif

  6. Thrilled to finally add our happy ending - or beginning I guess I should say! :) My husbands fiance visa was approved early this year, a bit less than one year after we began the visa process. I went back to Malawi in April and he came back here to the states with me the first week of May. We married July 1, and his GC was approved 9 weeks later. He is adjusting well here - attending school part time, working part time, learning to drive, no complaints about the food, etc. We are also expecting a baby boy at the end of February/early March! Couldn't be happier right now! :D

  7. Yes, i agree. that would be really helpful. Also what documents did the USCIS officer ask for/pay close attention to. Thanks mishellibelli.:)

Just got an email this morning that we were APPROVED after we left the interview office yesterday!!! Sooooo happy...I was feeling so down after that horrible interview yesterday!

Will post some of the interview questions when I get home from work tonight!

  8. Good luck and hope everything went well.

Thanks! It actually ended up being kind of nerve-wracking which I wasn't prepared for. I thought our case was fairly straightforward and that we would have a fairly short interview with the both of us in the same room. Instead we were put in a different room and interviewed separately for one hour each. Not a Stokes-style interview, but the interviewer asked *very* detailed questions. I ended up even getting called back in as the interviewer said we had a few minor discrepancies - I think due to language issues - which I clarified for her and she seemed satisfied. In all we were there for over 3 hours. She didn't give us an answer either way, just said she was going to review everything, but it sounded as if we're probably in the clear. Stressful!

  9. Hi Anginafrica, what state do you live in? If you are on Facebook, you might be able to do a search for African social groups in your area. Luckily we live in the San Francisco area, which is very diverse. Unfortunately, I only know of 2 Malawians that live here and they live fairly far from us, but we did end up joining the Bay Area South Africans social group here. They are very welcoming even to non-South African's, and I joined them even before my husband arrived as I used to live in both Botswana and Malawi. It has been great - we have big braai's and other events every month, and sometimes soccer games. My husband met a lot of new people this way.

My husband volunteered here also. He was an electrician in Malawi, so he started volunteering some of his time here with an organization called Habitat for Habitat for Humanity (who builds low cost housing for low-income families) to pass the time until he could start his electrical courses here.

Food-wise, we would take his Malawian staple food, nsima, a couple of nights a week when he first arrived. This area is also really diverse food-wise as well, so now he really enjoys sampling foods from all different cultures. We haven't had nsima for at least a few weeks now and he doesn't seem to be wanting it at all at the moment!

One of my first priorities when he arrived was showing him how to get around the neighborhood and all of the transit systems so that he felt comfortable going places on his own.

He also still talks to his friends and family in Malawi 1-2 times a week and keeps in touch with everyone via Facebook. Of course he miss everyone, but overall he tells me he is very happy and comfortable here already, no complaints from him whatsoever.

  10. Tried walk in for biometrics. Was turned down (unless you have a valid reason for not keeping up with the actual date). Well, it was worth a shot. Will go on the actual appt date now.

    Oh noooo... bummer.

    Hi!

Did you get the marriage certificate same day as your wedding? We got married on July 30 and the marriage certificate is still not available on the county recorder's website, so my AOS package is complete but we're still waiting for the marriage certificate.

Yes we did, but we were just married at the courthouse. I think when you get your certificate varies from state to state or even county to county.

  11. A quick question. I have read people go in for the "walk in" biometrics appt earlier than their actual appt on this website. Is there any advantage in doing this wrt to speeding the application process? I have my appt in Boston for Aug end, can i do an earlier walk in?

    cheers

I haven't heard of anyone on here having problems doing an early walk-in. I think it does speed the process...we did an early walk in about 10 days ago, and this morning we have received our interview date already. Our original biometrics appointment wasn't even scheduled until August 15th.
