  1. It has been nearly 3 years since i moved to the US but i'm still unable to get a decent job. I have a bachelors in early childhood education and was teaching in my home country for close to 10 years. I'm frustrated that i can't get a teaching job here even though i have tried so hard.

I did manage to get a retail job eventually. Both my first and current job here are in retail. I work full time but i never seem to have enough money to pay my share of the bills. My husband pays the bills he can afford to but his job doesn't pay alot either. I would really like to get out of retail and get a better job to improve the quality of our lives. Although i always on the lookout for jobs and apply for positions often, nothing has worked in my favour so far.

I don't know if i still want to pursue teaching anymore or just start on a new career path. I'm not sure what kind of other jobs i should be looking for, or what kind of jobs that would take my early childhood education degree other than the preschools/daycares. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm open to going back to school if necessary. Thanks.

  2. i looked too before moving but the prices were ridiculous. also, i was told that i had to write a description for every item i was intending to ship on customs forms and that sounded too tedious for me.

i divided my stuff into luggage bags and took as much as i could on the flight. i took sq and they were generous with the baggage and didnt charge me for the extra weight. i went back to sg for a holiday last year with an empty suitcase and did the same thing again. one more trip and i should have all my stuff here with me, lol.

  3. Some airlines allow you to send luggage unaccompanied. It could be cheaper than using a moving/shipping company. Maybe you would like to call your airline to find out? Also, if your books would fit into a suitcase, maybe you would just like to pay for that extra bag? My airline charged a hundred odd for an extra bag but sending it as unaccompanied luggage was cheaper.

  4. I can't seem to get a job too. I'm into my 4th month of job hunting. I live in a small town too and the number of new jobs every week is minimal. I have switched from looking for a job that i'm qualified in (early childhood) to just any good old job. I can't even get a job at CVS ;_; It's indeed comforting to know many others are going through the same thing as i am.

  5. I remember when i came here, one of the first few things i asked was where the bus stop and the subway was. I came from a city with really good public transportation and i never needed to learn how to drive a car. When i realized that there was no bus or subway, and i needed to drive 15mins to the supermarket and at least 30 mins to everywhere else, i was really shocked! I was like "You mean i can't go anywhere?!!!" and i actually took a couple of months to accept that i simply can't just take the bus to go to the only mall around here that is 45 minutes away by car. So if your fiancee grew up and lived in a place where she depended on public transport (like me), you might want to prepare her for that.

However, i must say that i find the lack of skyscrapers in my town very refreshing. Although i sometimes worry about the possibility of coming across snakes in my backyard (oh yeah, city girl haha), i actually am quite fond of how pretty it gets without all the concrete buildings. I squealed like a little girl the first time i saw a deer in the bushes. 'Rural living' does have its charm.

  6. Hi guys, i have a question. I checked my status today for the AOS and it says "The I485 APPLICATION TO REGISTER PERMANENT RESIDENCE OR TO ADJUST STATUS was transferred and is now being processed at a USCIS office. You will be notified by mail when a decision is made, or if the office needs something from you. " What does that mean? Does that mean i will have an interview? I haven't prepared anything for an interview! Should i start preparing now then? Thanks.

  7. Ive asked about this also, there is no clear answer. yes jfk ( although from what i can tell it is the only place that does)still gives the ead stamp according to people who got it recently and yes some people have worked on it (again according to them) some stating there lawyers even said it was ok. Then others will tell you Flat out no, that no body gives the stamp, and even if you got it you wouldnt be eligiable to work anyway. I really wish there was a clearer answer on this cause its really confusing. Other wise you just apply for the EAd when you apply for AOS, because the processing time is 90 days so if you applied that way even on your 1st day in the US seperatly you probably wouldnt get it before it expired with your K1. At least this is the info I gathered.

    :)

I came through JFK in January this year and yes, i got the Employment Authorized stamp. However, i don't want to take the risk hence i'm gonna wait for the EAD card instead.
