Depending on the state I wouldn't rely on the Check-box on the 230. After receiving the welcome letter I took wife to SSA to apply for her number and got it a week later. For the green card the USCIS tracking of it on site is unreliable but you will get it. Wife got her Green card in the mail and 5 days later site was still showing processing. Only thing needed for SSA is birth certificate and passport with the entrance stamp, as the stamped visa is a temporary I-551 for a year until green card is mailed to you. It takes most if not more than the 30 days to receive the GC.

Wife arrived on January 19, 2011 and got the welcome letter and new TSC receipt number 2 weeks later to say they are processing her Green card now. Wait till you get the welcome letter to make sure your wifes info is in the SAVE database for SSA to verify her information to DHS. Otherwise you might not be able to apply for her SSN until they can verify her information against what DHS has. Don't worry the GC will come eventually after they process that packet of information your wife brought to immigration. Didn't help that all the funky winter storms was going on across the country. I check the USCIS site everyday to see what the status is on the wifes Green Card.

Agreed with happy the other/s fell through! The other house needed a bit of work but was more expensive. This house is at least $15K cheaper and needed no work. It has central air and the other didn't. The other didn't have a dishwasher, this does. This one has inbuilt smoke alarms so when one goes off they all do (great security measure). It has double windows for better heat/cool retention. Garbage disposal... yeah loads better So in the end it worked out, and I saw my mother-in-laws true colours.

same with mine all the features, even came with a side by side refrigerator. Plus brick, fireplace and it appraised for more than i brought it for. I love not renting anymore and wife was dying to have a house of her own to do what she wants to and not answer to a landlord.

My husband is former military so we got a house through the VA and IFA (Iowa Finance Authority). We needed no down-payment, we don't pay mortgage protection (or something like that) and basically financially it's amazing (we bought a foreclosure house) because our mortgage is cheaper than rent!

Did I enjoy it? No. We were going to buy one house but that fell through because the owner wouldn't allow VA through the premises (the only explanation for this is the VA has strict guidelines about the quality of the property so there must have been lots wrong with it). We were living with Tony's parents because it wasn't suppose to take that long. It ended up taking 3-4 months to settle on the second house we picked but because the first house took a while to get the "no go" about the VA it was 6 months we were living with people... had we known that it would take that long we would have rented an apartment.

We had no choice of realtor because the property had a "sole right to sell" on it and this guy was a MORON! He was slow, he made offers that weren't what we told him, his spelling was atrocious and for some reason he found it appropriate to email YouTube clips to me and other people involved in the process (like the appraiser.. someone he didn't know). That's just the beginning. The banker hadn't done a lot of VA loans so he had to keep asking the experienced girl (the underwriter) questions so we would ask our banker a qn, he would ask her, and the next day we'd have our answers.

Anyway it was awful. I'm glad it's finally over. I honestly think living with the in-laws made it worse. There is a lot of family drama that ended in Tony and I being "kicked out" (it's in inverted commas because she didn't WANT us to move out, she wanted Tony to do what she wanted and he refused so we moved out) and he hasn't spoken to her since then, 31st May 2010. She texts him occasionally but she did and said some really awful stuff and until and unless she apologises he (we) won't speak to her. I've spoken to her occasionally when I've had no choice. I don't want to be outright rude when she's standing right there.

Ultimately though I really like that we own a house. I don't like that because I'm not on the mortgage I can't be on the title (that's a bank policy) and I couldn't be on the mortgage because I had zero credit history and I didn't want it to affect the interest rate. We're locked in at 4% so I'm pretty happy with that I like that US houses are MUCH cheaper than Aussie houses and I really think we got lucky because our house was built in the early 1900's (1920's maybe) and the insurer was apparently VERY impressed with it and the building quality in general... love that we can paint the walls and make changes however we want and there's no pet deposit . I smile every time we drive past a "leasing now" apartment because we don't need that anymore and that makes me happy

Right on I used my VA loan as well with no down payment. my first 2 choices fell through and i'm glad they did because the 3rd house is great. The bank i dealt with sold my mortgage to Wells Fargo and i have been happy ever since especially with the 4% interest. Like you my wifes name is not on mine as well but she knows she owns it too.

(750 x 2) + 1620 PHP. If i execute right i may not need to pay the 1620 Php. Depends on if Delta included it in the airfare charge which they say they did. But will have it to feed the tax hog just in case.

to the OP it is a headache because of the nuances you must keep track of and you better educate yourself on the entire process of buying a house. Only reason it was fun time for me is because I educated myself on the process and i got my house beginning of the bubble burst. It is also fun when you scored a interest rate drop to 4% back in October on a refinance since I barely had a year in the fixed mortgage and wanted to get the historical lows that interest rates were at.

So neighbors thought it was stupid to refinance..... but I knew better I was about 1.5 years into a 30 year mortgage. I was just beginning so better for me. For them though if you are 10-15 years into the mortgage it might not be the best of ideals until the math is done. I paid no refinancing charge or other fees. So basically I got away with getting a re-modification done when banks are being tight.

Hey all, first my name is Scott...my wife is from the phillipines...we have been together over a year and married. We have her K1 visa and we are about to go back to the United States. I am a US Soldier and stationed in S. Korea....for the past year I have been sending money to her family, but during this time we have been financially struggeling. My wife is now 16 weeks pregnant with our son, which is amazing bc we have been trying for about 6 months...and while trying i told her on many occassions that once she was pregnant money would STOP to her family..but yet she doesnt see it that way.

It all started after we first met and her 4 year old sister needed eye surgery or she would go blind, it was only 300.00 USD so it wasnt that bad, but after that it was her family with their hand out on payday. I delt with it but now i cant because my son's future is at stake.

I was sending 350.00 USD every 2 weeks....totaled 7,500.00 USD in 1 year, and then I sent her home with 3000.00 USD when she went home to visit. She has 9 brothers and sisters, two of the boys being 20 and 21. She is the oldest child.

Last night I made a comment on her facebook about how happy I was we were having a son, i check later and her oldest brother posted "send money home now says momma". Now this made me extremely angry not only did he disrespect my way of life but he posted on my comment about my son with such non-sense.

Today she said she wanted to send 150.00 USD home, I told her no we had discussed last check we would send 100.00 USD every 2 weeks...and thats all. She wont talk to her family about them getting jobs, she just sits quietly and lets them beg and i have to see her upset and crying

This is causing our marriage to be in trouble..I love my wife and will do anything to make her happy...but I cant take this stress anymore...what do i do?!

As of now I am not sending any money to them, and she wont speak to me going on 2 days now....

Take advice of some here. I set the tone early with my extended filipino family to cut them off at the pass before something like this started. First hint from my wife saying family ask her for some money...... then wanted to see if she could ask me to give her some money for them..... i said no from the get go. Then when i give her some money and she gives it to them then ask me for some more because she gave it all away I even said no to her.

Her family is going to be made at you both.... but your wife's demeanor will change and she will start to think of her own immediate family first.....and then give some of the excess to her family after her families has everything it needs.

you have to be firm and stand your ground. Don't try to bully her as she will just shut down even more. you have to understand that this is what her family expects from you but you don't have to send them money. If you didn't marry her then they would still have to survive the same way before you meet her. Basically they have gotten use to the way you send them money and became lazy. Your mistake is giving in to there demands in the first place.

I would have not given any money to see if it's love or just marrying for family support. I did my wife like that and she never asked me to support her family....but she also is a really proud filipina and refuses to ask me to help her family. When i did help I was visiting and staying with the family. I also never helped them directly, I helped my wife and in turn if she decided to give a little of what i gave her then so be it.

If your fiancée steadily ask you for money for her family, she is under tremendous pressure from her family to keep asking you. Take my advice the comment on Facebook is your line in the sand and cut them off. This will be the test of if it was love, convenience, or you will see how much she loves you but has the pressures of family. Family bonds are stronger in the Philippines then in the United States.

Lastly educate your wife on the fact the U.S. is not the land of milk and honey. Educate her on finances and a budget. Don't yell or scream because a filipina will just shut down and not learn anything. I educated my wife when we first meet that most foreigners are not rich at all. We just have jobs that pay more and that our bills are beyond what a filipino would think stuff should cost.

After I educated my wife she almost backed out because the way i told and showed her the real U.S. it sounded like a costlier version of the Philippines. When my wifes friends got to the U.S. they were sticker shocked at how much everything cost and how much harder they have to work for it. Some came back because they couldn't handle the western world and the beast it is. They came and talked to my wife starting to tell her what happen and my wife stopped them with one comment..."got your rose colored glasses broke over there huh". I could not stop laughing and said to myself wife is now prepared for what is behind the big lights.

Hope you take my advice and stop sending money and start dictating how things are going to roll. Block people from seeing their comments on your facebook page. If you send money...do it on your terms not theres. Don't send money that often either. Make them depend on themselves like you never entered the picture. Sorry if this offends some filipinos but the males 18 - 25 are super lazy. They rather depend on a handout than to work. They will use i'm going to college as a crutch....barely attending classes and not really learning anything.

the other side of the coin is if the filipina's meet a foreigner the families apply tremendous pressure for them to marry them just to support the family. Don't get me wrong some do it for love but a lot do it because of family obligations. The ones that marry for love are a treasure. The ones that can't break the family obligation can make a marriage miserable for both the husband and wife. For your fiancée realize that she is probably as miserable as you are with the pressures of her family. Try your best to understand her side and educate her on your side and come together in the middle. $100 is enough every 2 weeks...the two boys in there 20's need to man up and get a job sorry to say.

Glad my wifes brother isn't like that...he takes care of his own wife and kids. But appreciates me helping out since I'm his older and only brother. Rest of the in laws I don't help at all unless I feel compelled to and that is not remotely often. Man up dude and if she wants to leave it wasn't about love but convenience to help her family. Seen it happen too many times.

Enough rambling for me do whats needed to protect your family.

Thanks again for the reminder about the data page. We are in the habit now of carrying everything (all documents) with us where ever we go, just to be sure we will have anything needed.

Especially when dealing with CFO, they have given themselves an open ticket to ask for copies of any document.

I think it just shows what a scam they are, to be able to do or ask for anything they want. It leaves it open to abuse.

If for some reason, someone there doesn't like you, they have left it open to make a person jump through hoops.

Now they are acting like junior CO's. Like they have the authority to challenge your relationship.

Well the wife is done with it as she got her sticker and is now through dealing with the Philippine government. She also had to fill out an additional data form looks like they want to be all up in our personal life. That form asked for data I would expect to be on a job application. From phone numbers, email addresses, occupations and etc. she is glad she is done with them now and cleared to fly out of here in 2 days.

Yep good tip for those is to just take the entire visa package with you and all your information. I will list all that was asked for my wife to receive her sticker for those that don't want to be caught short handed.

Well, you need the visa and data page for the CFO stamp, but not to attend the seminar, you can attend the seminar in advance. That is what we have done.
