  1. Hi everyone-

I am applying for OCI (overseas citizen of India) for my daughter. When I applied for my son, there wasn't this requirement: Parental authorization form. Fine, can fill it out. But it says that it needs to be notarized. So does the main OCI application. Last time I applied I didn't notorize the main application. Is it any different for parental authorization form? This is a silly form asking that we give permission to our minor child (she's 6 months old) to go to India on her own.

If you can suggest a different forum or website, that would be fine too. I am a long time visa journey member so I thought I would ask here.

    Thanks, KP

  2. I just want to thank members of this forum for all their help. I wish more people who read, also contributed. I think I did a bit of both throughout the process (from beginning to end, i.e. starting with turning in the paperwork for my wife so she gets her interview in India till last week when she got her citizenship); I made a couple of friends and am in touch with them to this day (outside of visajourney). Again, thanks all. I will check in once in a while and continue to be a member here.

Best wishes to all who are on the way to getting to the last part, which is citizenship!

    KP

  3. Congrats!!

Wow, they only give you 2-3 days notice before the actual Oath date.. We are going on a 2 week vacation and I have a feeling we will get the letter right then. Great.. Does anyone know how the Oath rescheduling process goes in case we need to reschedule?

    Whtever,

Weigh the options. We had them reschedule the oath but we knew about our availability when my wife did her interview and we made that request in person. It worked, they didn't schedule us till after we returned. However, you have very little time. The answer, after my own research (and discussion here and my own question on another part of visajourney, (See:http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/460054-postponing-becoming-a-us-citizen/) is that each office is different. San Jose worked for us, but I don't know what your office is. There have been cases where you end up at the end of the line and it takes months, maybe much more, even six months to get back on track. So keep that in mind. Is the vacation local? is it in the US? is it abroad? How much money would you lose if you cut it short? If its two tickets worth $4,000 in total or something, then I would take a chance and go through the process of re-scheduling. If its a few hundred dollars and a US vacation that can be moved, then I would consider that. My two cents after having researched the issue.

    Good luck, KP

  4. Citizenship! Solemn ceremony at San Jose at the USCIS office (not the main larger ceremony). Happened on 2/7/14 as planned. Only drawback of this ceremony is that passport office folks don't come to this, only to the main ceremony which means a separate trip to apply for the passport.

So turned below line red to update.

Continued good luck for the September 2013 filers!

  5. For those who came across this thread because they have a similar issue/question, a fellow VJ member posted some great links to actual people's experiences with this. Of course, your results will vary, but at least you have actual data to use. Look at this Thread, Post #4.

    http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/472784-examples-of-postponingrescheduling-interviews/

Nice documentation. Sounds like experiences wary by who they encounter and definitely which office. It was a calculated decision on our part as postponing the trip was not an option for a variety of reasons. It worked out for us. Based on this, I would say, don't mess with the USCIS scheduling if you possibly can (nothing new here); I do maintain that there are times when you have to take a chance, especially if you have a 10 year green card and you can continue to go about your life (except that you can't vote)... etc.

    Best, KP

  6. Updating my case. Received official oath ceremony letter in the mail today, Feb 7. Would have been sooner but we requested a later date as we were out of the country.

  7. There have been quite a few on this board alone in the past that have talked about the hassles they had to go through postponing the oath. Not everyone will have issues, but a large number have encountered difficulties especially with oath ceremonies that aren't that frequent. Remember you're pretty much being sent to the bottom of the oath queue and this is the USCIS computer system you have been having to deal with for so long. Do you really want to deal with that any further?

Remember they will chose when your oath date is, you do not. So you could get it soon or you could get it a long time down the road or as some have experienced they were lost in the system once again.

The golden rule has always been, only postpone it if it's a life and death situation. After all isn't this why most people moved to the US for and have been wanting? That should take priority over anything at this time if you have filed off the N-400. If not, then why not wait until you don't have anything else planned for the next few months?

Warlord, I both agree and disagree with you.

    1. On the point on waiting till nothing planned in the next 6 months and then applying. Yes, that's a prudent path. I just didn't expect that San Jose will be that efficient. We expected that we will be dealing with in Feb or March well after your return/

    2. Your point about being sent to the bottom of queue didn't hold true for us. They scheduled it on the day we returned back to the US. We documented our plans by letter and handed it to the interviewing officer.

    3. Your assume far to much. People have PR cards for decades before deciding to become a citizen. Relax. Citizenship is not a life or death thing if you have a long-term (10 year) valid PR card. At the most its a huge hassle to start again and an additional cost of $700. The cost of changing flights and vacation was a much more expensive proposition for us. Your golden rule is not that golden. There are always exceptions. The real golden rule is not to sit and do nothing but to document, document, document...requests and make sure you take a proactive approach and not expect things to fall into place.

Having said all that, USCIS is famous for losing cases. So I wouldn't do it unless the benefits outweigh the consequences. We were traveling with a kid, and its been several years since we returned to the country of our birth. Its not so simple to change things. All I am saying is that one can be more nuanced in their response to a situation. Each situation is unique.

    Best, KP

  8. Just reporting that my wife, by letter and in person at the interview said that we would be out of country until Jan 21 and requested an interview thereafter. The officer took the info, highlighted the dates. Yesterday, the 21st, the day we returned back to the US, we got the following message:

"On January 21, 2014, we scheduled you for your oath ceremony and sent a notice providing the date, time, and location. If you move prior to the scheduled ceremony, please use our Change of Address online tool to update your case with your new address or call our customer service center at 1-800-375-5283."

Kudos to the San Jose field office for doing it right! IMHO, there were others who recommended that we postpone our travels. We did not, and everything worked as planned. Now waiting for the letter, then on to citizenship for my wife!

  9. Hi warlord, Songer and others regarding your comments below:

IMHO, its definitely an urban myth. My wife, by letter and in person at the interview said that we would be out of country until Jan 21 and requested an interview thereafter.

Either San Jose is doing something very right or other offices where these requests got lost were the ones reported by others.

    warlord, on 15 Oct 2013 - 04:31 AM, said:snapback.png

Best bet is to postpone the trip. The oath should only be cancelled in a life or death matter. A simple trip is not a good reason to postpone the oath as this could set your wife back for a long time as she would be re-entered in the system. Many people have been delayed for a long time, others have even been lost in the system and have taken them a long time to get another oath.

@Warlord, I'm in a similar situation to the OP and was curious if these cases of people postponing their interview/oath getting "delayed or lost in the system" are actually verified or just urban myths.

  10. Quick question: when we check the processing times on the USCIS website and it says 5.6 months, does that mean that it takes approximately 6 month from the date you filed (priority date) to the day you take your oath?

I would read that as six months from when you turned in your N-400. Don't get it confused with the priority date; I think the assumption is that you are eligible, this is just processing time.

  11. My oath is tomorrow. Can I bring a couple of friends along? My husband will be going as well.

There won't be any restrictions per se. When I did it (and I am in this forum on behalf of my wife), there was a peanut gallery in the back where the guests were, and the citizens were up in front. So don't worry about how many guests you may have.

    Congrats!

  12. Wife just finished her interview--she was recommended for citizenship. Took 20 minutes in total. Six questions, had to write a sentence and read a sentence. *No* documents checked except for her green card. Got a sheet of paper noting that she was recommended.

She requested that her oath ceremony be scheduled after we return from a trip we are leaving for in two weeks. He noted it in red and requested a date after she returns. She left a letter requesting the same, along with a copy of her plane reservations noting dates.

Fingers crossed that the scheduling will happen as requested.

Good luck to all that are waiting. We aren't done till she has a US passport in hand!

    KP

Update. Got the e-mail just now stating that her file is inline for oath scheduling. Fingers crossed that will be scheduled after we returned as requested.

  13. Can I ask you guys who had a successful interview how long it took for your online status to change from interview and testing to oath ? my online status hasn't changed since I had my interview 2 weeks ago sad.png

Goodness knows how it works. My wife's interview was on the 11th, and today, it is been moved to oath scheduling. Yours was earlier and there's no movement. And its the same office. Go figure!

  14. Update as of 12/11/13

Requested towards end of the interview, to the interviewing officer, plus a letter, along with flight reservations that the oath is scheduled after we return. Officer wrote it down in red and highlighted it (on the N-400, I think) and kept the letter. He refused to sign a copy stating that he received the letter. So now we wait and see if when she gets scheduled.

Fingers crossed that it will work out!

    KP

  15. Congratulations.

    Good luck with trip

Thanks! Trip should be fine. Just hoping they will schedule oath ceremony after we return.

    KP

Congratulations, and safe travels. I'm next, interview next Monday, exciting and overwhelming.

Thanks. My wife was nervous. She had no need to be. As long as it a bonafide case, there's nothing to worry about. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

  17. Hi all, my wife is a Sep 2013 filer and is up for her interview on Dec 11, San Jose, CA office. She's a bit nervous so I need your help in simply telling me the sequence of how the interview went. I think it is something like this:

    1. Introduction

    2. Oath, i.e. Swear to tell the truth.

    3. Officer looks at the documents, like the PR card and passport.

    4. Officer goes through the N-400 and reconfirms the information.

    5. The test, i.e. upto 10 questions from the 100 she prepared for, need to get 6 right.

    6. Then the interviewee is asked to read a sentence.

    7. Then the interviewee is asked to listen and then write a sentence.

    8. If all has gone well, then she signs the forms

Does this sound about right? lot of you have finished the interview recently so it should be fresh in your minds.

Also pretty much we can expect exactly upto 10 of the 100 questions in the booklet (that they gave her during fingerprinting, yes?)

    Many thanks in advance, KP

  18. I wasn't worried about travelling in January as I know I can do it with my Canadian passport and that's what I've used for Vietnam Visa--I just want to be sure I can get back into USA when I come home if it is without my green card. I will have to figure out how I get a speedy passport if my dates get that close. I am eligible for naturalization on Dec 14. I thought things would take long enough that it would be like February before I got to that point -- I was someone that had my one year extension letter almost expire while waiting for my 10 year green card. Apparently not!

    Carocaro,

My wife is in the same boat. Her interview is on Dec 11, and we fly Dec 26. There is no time to do the oath, get the passport and then a visa to where we are going. Your best bet is to request postponement of your oath ceremony. That is we intend to do at the interview.

And had I known how quickly this would happen (4 months from application to citizenship, conceivably) we would not have even applied till after we return in late January; USCIS is not known for its timeliness.

    Best, KP

  19. Can we travel with just the certificate of citizenship? I am booked to leave Jan 9 for three weeks in Asia...I have my Canadian passport and a Nexus card, but what if I get interview and oath before I go...can I get back into USA with just that certificate? There won't be time for me to get a passport.

No, you cannot. A certification of naturalization is not a travel document. You can get a US passport in 1 day if you are near a passport center, where you first make an appointment and then show up. Check how that is done, here:

    http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/where/where_4851.html

I think Canada allows dual citizenship, so you get to keep your Canadian passport, so conceivably you could travel on that passport. The issue arises when you have to return to the US.

    Good luck, KP

  20. Received my interview letter on 11/11/13, interview scheduled for 12/11/13

  22. KP, sanjose does not do same day oath, Oath ceremony is held in campbell heritage theater once or twice a month. For October it is scheduled on 23rd. I guess depends on how many people are inline for interview/oath. I think the best option is to complete your interview (yours should be around December 6 -10)and then request the I/O to schedule your oath in Jan/Feb. You could even request to postpone the interview, my preference would be oath...

    grs,

Looks like San Jose schedules interview about 6 weeks after fingerprinting. That would be early Dec for us. So a Dec 6-10 oath is very possible. We will ask that it be scheduled for after we return in late January. Thanks for the info on Oath cermonies twice a month. That's new info I did not know.

    KP

  23. I am in a similar situation.

I have a trip planned at the end of January. I applied for citizenship the first week of July. Having witnessed the process a few times as my friends where going through it, I assumed I would probably be done with the whole thing and with an American passport in my hand by the end of the year. I know there is no guarantee and every case can be different , but if your friends' process took 4 months from beginning to end you kind of believe this will be the same for you.

We are at the end of October now and I haven't even gotten my biometrics appointment. I called in twice , went for an INFOPASS once and all they told me was that I'm still withing normal time range.

Having said that - maybe it will be moving very slow and I won't have to reschedule anything. But if things finally pick up and I will have my oath scheduled too close to my trip , so I can't get a passport in time ( even going the expedited way ), I will be rescheduling my oath ceremony .

Looks like Boston is behind. Here in San Jose, they seem to be on track. Add your case at :http://www.trackitt.com/usa-immigration-trackers/n400 This gives more granular data on your specific type of case. The only thing to note is, if you are going away, make sure someone is watching your mail and authorize him/her to open anything from INS so you can reschedule in needed.

My wife did her fingerprints today and we intend to request moving the oath ceremony if its scheduled when we are gone.

    Good luck, KP

It's a lot more simple than a lot of people are making it....

I was travelling 2 weeks after my interview date.

I went to the interview, and told the IO that I would be out of the country for the next 2 months.

He put a note on my forms saying "Please schedule oath ceremony after March 5 2012, as Ms. XXXX will be out of the country" and highlighted it with a yellow highlighter.

While I was away, I Skyped the USCIS 0800 number, and the person told me my oath was scheduled for March 25th.

When I got home, my oath letter was indeed in my mail.

So....Kaash, all you need to do is that. Don't even think about cancelling trips or interviews...it's very simple!! smile.png

Thanks, yes, I think it will be simple to reschedule the oath ceremony. We intend to press ahead. My wife did her fingerprints today.

    Best, KP
