Maybe consider consular processing https://www.uscis.gov/green-card/green-card-processes-and-procedures/consular-processing ?  When it is far enough along, he can then begin the process of re-establishing domicile in the US to prepare the way for you to join him.

As his residence started when he crossed, he needs to file US tax return declaring income earned from June 2016 (including his wages from Canada earned between June 2016 to end of year).  He will also file a 2016 Canadian tax return since he has not declared himself a non-resident Canadian for tax purposes as he is working there still.

From your explanation, he had no Obamacare compliant health insurance coverage in 2016 so most likely have to pay whatever penalty is applicable.

RRSP contributions is not tax deductible for Uncle Sam like 401k/IRA but treaty between the countries means the any growth in the RRSP is deferred as you stated.  You also cease to be able to contribute when one declares non-residency for tax purposes with Revenue Canada (although the RRSP can be maintained just that no additional contributions can be made).  He should do that when he has closed Canadian financial ties (property, large financial accounts etc, Canadian based business etc).  Else, he will have to continue filing Canadian tax returns.

As a resident of Texas, at least he doesn't need to deal with state income tax.

Just to clarify, usually TN is not issued by the company itself but is a status granted at the border by the US border official to Canadian citizens.  The company usually gives an offer of letter of employment for which the official has the discretion to provide as long as it meets the requirements of the NAFTA treaty to grant that status.  It is also non immigrant status.  There is no path to a greencard from TN status thru employer channels.

H1-B would mean your husband's company actively petitioning him (i.e. a sponsorship) which involves quite a bit of time and expenses on their part.  H1-B "supposedly" is only for certain specialty occupation.  Certainly in my situation on my move from Canada to the US years ago, my company's US HR clarified that they did not need to perform any such sponsorship as I made it clear I was moving on a family based derivative visa anyway.  It just so happened they could use a person with my experience and skillset in the area I was moving to.

Note that both H1-B and TN are tied to the employer.  If your husband's company should let him go before the 3 year renewal, then he will have no legal status to stay in the US.  

As it seems the intent by the family is for your husband to have a greencard, then as EM_Vandaveer advised, have  him adjust status based on his marriage to you as a US citizen and read the link provided.  Note that travelling between US and Canada/other countries while that is underway probably is not advised.

It was fairly straightforward. Checked that I knew the details I put in the form. Then the civics test. Once you get 6 correct, they stop and congratulate you.

Oath taking on December 2, hope to update my status in red font on/after that date

Just saw this update today at USCIS.

We scheduled your oath ceremony for Receipt Number xxx. We sent a notice with the date, time, and location of your oath ceremony to the address you gave us.

Will be checking my mail.

Checked the uscis landing status and I note my case was just updated today.

Stated that we have been placed in line for the oath ceremony and will mail decision to us.

We went for our interview today and passed without problems. Civics questions easy . Just have to remember the details on the apps (ssn, dates blah blah).

Now just need to wait for the letter with the date of the oath taking and the location of the courthouse. May take between 6 to 8 weeks. Guess it will be year end before we get our citizenship and request for our US passports.

Hm my inline update went missing. Guess one of the recent updates didn't quote mine and just got repeated. anyhoo, received interview date of Oct.24

checked my case status online and updated today Sept 14 that interview is scheduled and letter sent/will be sent but the date itself is not evident on the case info of site.

kris1915's estimate sounds about right. Was asked to resend photo so that delayed a little. Good they now have the option for 10 year passports.

I was able to get a U.S. american express card based on my relationship with them in Canada. Be sure to call American Express here to see what your options are.

Ensure you associate your SSN with the card as soon as possible to build up actual US credit history. This will also allow one to start out with a card that has a higher credit limit that you wold not otherwise been able to obtain immediately upon arrival.

The prescriptions were the inhalers. The one, I was paying about $92 for, here I paid $177, the other, the basic ventilin, I was paying $16 in Canada, here its $45. Thats a pretty drastic difference. My husband told me though, that I should go to Walmart to have them filled, that I would find a big price difference if I did. So mayby its not more expensive, maybe its just that pharmacy and Im still learning.

Yeah, prescription drugs are generally more expensive here. Try to get generics as much as possible. I would probably go to Costco for my prescriptions if I ever needed them since I'm already a member.

Just to clarify, I don't believe any public health insurance plans in Canada's provinces covered prescription drugs. I know for a fact that Ontario's does not. Some employers do offer supplemental medical insurance that covers them for participating employees.

Were there any negatives/drawbacks to opening up an account with RBC? I just bank with my local credit union, but seriously considering opening an account before I leave on the 26th.

Other than the fact that they charge monthly fees . Fortunately, rebate for having a checking account, a visa and a TFSA was enough to cover the monthly fees. The checking and TFSA has very LITTLE amount now and is just there just in case.

PNC Financial is buying RBC Centura next year but they said the impact for their Canadian clients doing business here would be minimal.

I opened my RBC Centura account from Canada. It does not generate interest (that's probably why they don't require an SS number) and there is a minimum amount to maintain to avoid fees . But it certainly made my move to the States much easier. I qualified for a US credit card right away. And I amanaged to get a mortgage thru them as well within months of moving here. Note that they are in North Carolina while I am in Arizona.

Other helpful tips, Verizon (at least in Arizona) considers Canadian credit history (so I didn't have to put down a large deposit). American Express considers previous relationships before but you have to open it via their global accounts group (forgot the exact term).

If the new immigrant had a relationship with American Express in their original country, they can usually apply with AMEX here in the US citing the previous relationship.

I used Costco Tru Earnings AMEX card since I'm a Costco member anyway and it accrues nice rewards with no annual fee. Be sure to have the SSN if available associated with the US Amex account (I opened the card without my SSN yet and was granted 5,000 USD credit limit). Use it regularly and you will find that your credit history will start to build up.

It's a non-issue. As you intend to apply for them as a US citizen later on making them immediate relatives, they don't have to wait in line for a visa number.

If they were not immediate relatives, passports won't matter either as the priority date will be based on country of birth rather than citizenship. One thing to note is that it seems difficult currently for a Chinese national to obtain a multiple entry visitor's visa.

My mother was born and resides in the Philippines but was considered a Chinese national (as she never naturalized) and holds a Taiwan passport. She had difficulty getting anything more than a 3 month visa with that passport. From my understanding because of tensions between China and the US. A Philippine passport holder might have a better chance of getting a multiple entry visa (like several of my aunts).

Looks like they just need to get their SS numbers. But given one is married with a stepchild, why so long?
