Sorry, technical glitch - double post

Hi,

I want to give a run thru of my day so that anyone going thru Newark knows what to expect.

Appointment was 9:40 so I got there half hour early. Place was packed. I'll bet people got there early. No numbering system, so I'm not sure if they took first come first served, or went by time. That was annoying and made the waiting harder.

I waited for 2 hours - It was really hard because at the time I didn't know the difference why, some people were called to go through the door, and others were called to the window - some even left after the window chat. Officer told me later that they were really unusually busy and sorry about the wait.

I finally got into interview at 11:15.

Officer put me at my ease, chatting a bit, explained a few things. He knew I was nervous.

He said I had a choice - make an appointment for August to have my Oath ceremony, or have it today (there are oath ceremonies 3 times a day, every day - 11:30, 2:30, 4:30). Keep in mind that I had to give up my Green Card. If you plan to travel before getting your passport - you can get stuck outside of the country! ARGGGGH! I had to make my decision before leaving his office.

Anyway, the interview itself was nothing different than what everyone else has posted - read/write sentence, 6-10 questions, review of application, sign a bunch of things.

The questions are standard lists and don't change much.

- who is the governor

- something with George Washington as the answer

- what must a citizen do (obey the laws)

- where is the statue of liberty

- name 2 holidays

- the question about the 4 amendments about who can vote

(Sorry, I may have forgotten one - a couple of these are the ones I kept forgetting while I practiced )

He gave me a paper review of my interview that said which parts I passed.

He gave me a questionnaire - this has to be filled out prior to the Oath Ceremony - not a big deal for Newark because the ceremony is the same day. It might be harder for those who have to do it separately. I didn't really read it but it asks questions like if you've traveled since the interview, gotten married, or in trouble with the law, etc. Obviously I answered no!

It was about 20 minutes, with all the chatting.

After, I had to hang around and wait until they called my name. When they call your name to the window, they take the paper and give you the white package of information about citizenship responsibilities, etc. Also, you sign 2 copies of your certificate of naturalization, which they give you at the oath ceremony.

About 11:45, all the people who were waiting and ready for the first ceremony left.

About noon, they "closed" for lunch - everyone waiting for paperwork could leave, those who were waiting for interviews had to stay.Back at 1.

At one, everything started up again.

They called my name.

About 2:45 everyone was invited to the oath ceremony - about 60-70 of us. Oath takers up front, visitors sit in back.

Saw a video. Told us all about traveling, passport, don't lose the certificate, etc.

Did the oath - the people doing it were average workers, no one special like a judge or anything.

President Obama sent us a recorded message

(can't remember the order here, sorry).

Said the Pledge of Allegiance.

Lots of clapping - everyone was tired.

Called our names for the certificates.

And then we took pictures.

I'm glad I went through Newark - I work there so I just walked from my office over. But the oath ceremony is done so that I don't ever have to go back!

The office was so crowded that there's no way to tell if hubby was there without asking. So I'm really glad he stayed away.

It's all done, I'm a citizen!

Other than the waiting, waiting, waiting, it was relatively painless - officer was jovial, chatty. He was confident that I would pass.

I'm posting separately in the Forum about Newark experience, because Oath ceremony is the same day.

Now I have to get my passport expedited!

We're in the middle of the process right now.

I posted to your other thread about needing income to sponsor your spouse. I forget the exact wording, but it's something like, you don't have to prove that you have sufficient income, but they ask you about it anyway - I sure don't want to be denied just because we didn't have that taken care of, so I'm applying for work from New Jersey.

also, think about whether your spouse will file from here or in Canada. Here seems to take less time and the spouse can travel back and forth across the border. If the spouse applies from inside Canada, they may be denied reentry into Canada and have to start all over again. Plus, it takes longer.

One thing I'd suggest is that you get your citizenship done before you move, because if you get to Canada and want to move back here, you will have to go through US immigration all over again. Check my timeline - it's about 6 months through Newark.

The biggest hurdle is going to be proving that I can support my US hubbie. It's hard to get a job in Canada while I'm still in the US, but I need a job in Canada before I can afford to live there.

I'm getting nervous, but I think I'm as prepared as I can be.

- all my ID is ready

- all my tax forms, proof of life documents etc. are ready

- I've practiced the questions - I still get mixed up on a few

- My clothes are ready to go - I'm wearing a work logo shirt because I have to go to a meeting tomorrow night

- Hubby isn't going

Any suggestions?

My US citizenship interview is next month and we're in the middle of moving to Canada. After me being in the US for 6 years, we believe that overall our life will be better in Canada.

A lot of people think our countries are the same or very similar. We've found that that isn't the case. Although the people in both countries are great,

Consider:

- cost of living

- work/life balance

- cost of immigration

- health care

- social security/retirement

- politics

- civil liberties

etc.

To the OP, I have thought a great deal about the original and the oath question. I don't see how my feelings and beliefs will change.

Regardless of my thoughts on guns, my answer will always be the same:

If I was required by law to bear arms, I would, but I would be scared to death and therefore be of no use to anyone.

Credit ratings were a nightmare - I've been here since July 2005 and I have about half of what I had and still have in Canada. Got lots of debt though

several times. After all the other paperwork, this seems anticlimactic

OMG I just spent 2 days pouring over emails, phone bills, and online banking records trying to figure out when I travelled back and forth to Canada.

I've got 2 trips that I don't know what days I travelled - I'm going to guess the best I can, and hope like hell that it's not enough to deport me!

I've been reading the pinned threads etc. Am I understanding this right? We only have to submit copies of the tax forms? No other proof of relationship with the N400 application?

That seems too easy...

I will be applying for citizenship asap (summer 08) for several reasons:

- I want to be able to vote, since political decisions affect my life, and the only way to vote is to be a citizen

- travel is easier

- I am fortunate that Canadians can have dual citizenship

- No greencard to renew in 10 years no more USCIS

I like the idea of getting the stamp from the embassy, but you'll have to prove you sent off the petition. Would you be able to get the stamp here before you go?

I travelled to Canada in mid-March 08 with my card expiring 3/30/08, and the immigration official told me not to travel with an expired card! Obviously they cannot be expected to know all the rules!

I'll renew passport in the summer before it expires in October 08, that way I'll be ready for the stamp.

I'm not holding my breath that New York will get me processed before March 09, but miracles do happen!
