Amana - I see you are from Delaware. They do not have oath ceremonies that often. There was one on October 1, and the next one was on December 10th. I wouldn't worry. When I was waiting for my oath letter, I called and they said that if I hadn't had a letter within 90 days of the interview, they could look in to it, but not sooner. My letter arrived near the end of the 90 days window.

You can't judge based on Phillie timelines if you live in Delaware.

The October oath was at the courthouse in Wilmington. The December oath was in Newark near the university.

I can also tell you that there were about 300 people getting their oaths in December and it involved a lot of lining up to register and then to collect the certificate at the end. Not the most efficient set up, but they got it done.

In the unlikely event there are any other Delaware members out there... they don't seem to do oath ceremonies very often. Ashleyernesto had their ceremony in October. I interviewed a week later and got my oath letter yesterday, for a December 10 ceremony. Which will be at a conference center in Newark DE.

I'm looking forward to it. Better late than never.

I did the same thing and have received a yellow letter telling me to bring tax info and other items to the interview. The interview letter I got lists some other items. I'm not worried about it in the least; they've told me what to bring and I'm sure it will be fine. I can't imagine a qualified person who brings the proper paperwork they are asked to bring will be rejected.

I guess I'll find out soon enough.

I did reschedule, just following the instructions on the form, and I got an appointment about 3 weeks after the original. I had written on the letter a couple of dates when I wouldn't be available.

However in retrospect I think I could have done a walk in and they might have accepted it. And the amount of time it takes probably depends where you live (my appointment was in Dover DE - not the busiest office in the country). Also I mailed the letter back on the actual day of the missed appointment, and that wasn't a problem.

In case anyone is ever in the same situation, it took exactly this long to resolve (2 1/2 months or so), which I have no complaints about. I got the corrected card today at no additional fee.

Also they changed the expiry to 10 years from when the correct card was issued.

So I'm done.

I got my 10 year greencard today - in my maiden name!! I applied in my married name and my temporary green card was in my married name, but they got it wrong on the 10 year. Has this happened to anyone else? I hope it is not going to be a hassle to have a correct one issued.

Did you send tax return or tax transcript (document from IRS)?

Just a thought. I have noticed people mentioning this before, that they want the transcript from IRS not the return you sent in.

It only takes a week or less to get one after you call IRS.

I didn't read the fine print either, so I'm glad someone asked this question because I was wondering it too.

I always stock up on Reactine, Blistex Lip Conditioner (in the white tub), and President's Choice fig bars.

These kind of threads make me homesick for Canadian candy.

I agree, if you didn't get this job, then there will be another better job in your future! I was rejected several times for jobs, and ended up with a much better job than anything else I interviewed for.

I went "business casual" like I was going to work, but not dressy. But jeans and a neat shirt would be totally appropriate. They don't really care what you are wearing, but I think it is only polite to look decent when you are visiting an office.

Daisy -excerpt from the emigrant's guide from the CRA website:

"In addition, if the Canadian-source income you are reporting for the part of 2005 that you were not a resident of Canada is at least 90% of your net world income for that part of the year (or if you had no income from sources inside and outside Canada for that part of the year), you can claim the remaining federal non-refundable tax credits in full. See your tax guide for the remaining federal non-refundable tax credits.

Note

To claim full federal non-refundable tax credits,attach a note to your return stating your net world income (in Canadian dollars) for the part of 2005 that you were not a resident of Canada. Show separately the net income you received from sources inside and outside Canada for that part of the year. We cannot allow full federal non-refundable tax credits without this note."

It's definitely a shock to the system. You will get used to it in a couple of weeks, definitely. I have to say it was not a bad time not working for 8 months, but now that I have been working for 2 months, I am really enjoying it. It probably took me 2-3 weeks to get used to getting by on less sleep.

I hope you work with some nice people - I think that is the best part about working, finally having a life outside of the one you have with your spouse. Then you have plenty to chat about when you get home at night!

There is no health premium if your income is under $20,000.

If you had no income in 2005 then you shouldn't owe them anything, but send in a return anyway.

Oh, because I didn't read the rules correctly. This is the rule:

2.2 (1) Every individual shall pay a tax, called the Ontario Health Premium, for a taxation year ending after December 31, 2003 if the individual is resident in Ontario on the last day of the taxation year. 2004, c. 29, s. 2.

But the "taxation year" is defined as:

"The term end of the year means December 31, 2004, if you were a resident of Ontario on that date, the date you left Canada if you emigrated in 2004, or the date of death for a resident of Ontario who died in 2004."

This only applies in Ontario, which has an evil additional health premium since 2004, which has been very controversial. So I'll owe another $450 which I'll grudgingly pay once they send a bill. I think Zyggy is correct. If I'd moved to another province, it would be a different story (I think).

I'm still happy because my taxes were much less than I thought they would be (assuming I didn't make 5 other mistakes.... ) and I have put aside money to pay what I expected to pay, so whatever is left over is a bonus to me.

I sent in my Canadian tax return today!!

I did it myself and I did plenty of research and was careful, so I think it will be fine.

One bonus I didn't know about til I filled in the forms: the Ontario Health Premium is only payable if you lived in Ontario on the last day of the tax year, so that saved me several hundred $$ I wasn't expecting!! My income was also larger than it would have normally been because I never paid back the Homebuyers Plan, I just claimed the balance as income. As it turned out, this actually appears to have saved me another couple of hundred, since it would have cost me 25% non-resident withholding taxes if I'd put it back in an RRSP and then withdrawn it later. This could go either way, depending on your Canadian income (i.e. if you were in a higher bracket than I am).

Also one thing to check is whether you overpaid your CPP premiums, if you moved early in the year. Mine was overpaid by $110 or so. There is a form on the Canadian tax website (google "cra"). It's form T2204.

I didn't earn any income in the US so I was able to claim 100% of the tax credits, as though I'd lived in Canada all year.

US taxes are a mystery to me, and we are having those done by an accountant.

Maybe some of this info will help someone else.

This was a huge adjustment for me too! I lived in Toronto my whole life and never owned a car. Fortunately we were able to buy a second car after I moved. Now I drive 40 minutes each way to work, which is the same time it took me on the subway in Toronto. I miss being able to walk to stores, but I don't mind the driving as much as I expected to.

City living was not an option for us, and we love where we live but we definitely need 2 cars here.

I have learned to enjoy driving, but I prefer being a passenger when I have a choice.

Getting back to taxes for a second, thanks for this thread, it has been very helpful. I tried to use "Quicktax" and it came up with the wrong results. It can't "cope" with the situation of someone who moved in 2005 but did not earn any income outside of Canada. Be very wary of automated tax programs.
