  1. I'm wondering how long it normally takes to get your passport back?? I'm in Vancouver. My lawyer told me I could ask them if it would be possible to get my passport back from them in person - the same day!! He said they may not be able to do it but it wouldnt' hurt to ask - has anyone heard of this??

Thank God, my passport came back EXACTLY 2 business days after the day of my interview... We picked it up at the local DHL office. We were so happy that it was that fast!

Now, many have written that they asked nicely about getting the passport back the DAY AFTER the interview because they needed to travel back to the US or some other matter, and in some cases the consulate was nice enough to give their passports back the day after.. so it wouldn't hurt to ask :)

  2. Those of you who did POE, then came back a few days later back to Canada etc, what questions did they ask you on your initial POE?

Did they not check how many pieces of luggage you are bringing? Doesn't it look odd that you are carrying only a carry-on luggage (for example) at your POE, whereas it is supposed to be your "official" move to the US?

Are they expecting a big list of luggages on the POE and does the lack of a large amount of stuff on the POE look bad?

Also, does the officer @ POE ask you which city you are going to, where u will live, do you have a job yet, is your house sold yet, did you quit your old job yet, etc??

Its frustrating getting different answers from different officials...

  3. HEY FOLKS, we are extremely thankful and happy to report that we got APPROVED... :D:D:D

WE THANK U ALL, honestly! I completely feel that we passed it because of all of your support and this forum!!!!! God Bless :)

Keep it coming the rest of you. Post and share your concerns, questions, good news :)

    TAke care all....

  4. Hey guys,

Does anybody know if I am allowed to take all of my personal belongings ONLY on the 1st POE (ie, activation of visa) or can I tell them "well, I'm activating my visa now on this POE, but on a later trip I'm going to be bringing a whole buncha other stuff with U-haul, which I couldn't bring this time"

Where can I read about how many things I can bring with me on POE or if I can also bring similar quantity of goods on subsequent trips??

    Thanks,

    Choles

  5. Good luck tauruslady and kimberly - keep us posted!!

aimal, this is how i interpreted it, but i hope others can give their feedback too. your household is who is living with you now - you, your spouse, your kids. if you are the usc, you have to fill out the i-864 no matter what. then your mom fills it out as a joint sponsor and your uncle does as well. i don't think either of them need to fill out the i-864a.

we are doing something similar - i filled out the i-864 and so did my dad, but he's not part of my household now, so he didn't do an i-864a.

someone please correct me if i am wrong!

aimal, also wanted to ask what you've thought about using for showing domicile?

we'll be living with our family to start off too - are you filling out an official lease with them or just a letter from them or what?

  6. Hi everyone,

We have read through the pinned domicile post, all 150 or so posts, searched for every other domicile post on this forum and read all that too, so what we've gathered is based on everything we could learn from VJ. Still, if anyone can give some feedback to us, we'd really appreciate it. We've got less than 2 weeks to go and are getting nervous since most of our proofs don't fit into the traditional obvious domicile proofs.

    Here's what we have:

    • Lease agreement - but it's with my parents, should we say we'll be living with family till we get adjusted, or is it sufficient to just show it as a lease agreement?

    • Shipping quote from ABF/UPack - it's a little email print out, anyone recommend using any other service instead?

    • Bank statements from US account and wire transfer showing fund transfer from Canada to US

    • Credit card statements

    • Professional license

    • Child care registration confirmation letter and canceled check of registration fee

    • Ticket purchase confirmation and trip itinerary

    • Car insurance quote

    • Driver’s license

    • Voter registration card - but it's 10 years old...is there even any point in taking it?

Is this enough? Any other ideas for us???

We'd appreciate all and any help! Thank you!

  7. Ok so maybe this is a dumb question...does that mean you cannot enter the consulate with your cell phone or any of the other forbidden items? Ie, there's no option to leave your phone or keys at the consulate (meaning before you enter the main area) itself??

  8. Yes, please let us know once you've had your interview! We are wondering what to do too, we'll line up early if that's what will help us get in sooner, but if we don't need to, obviously we'd rather not, esp with young kids and cold weather...

Good luck guys and looking forward to your reviews!

  9. Hey everyone,

Sorry we disappeared for a bit...sick kids keeping us busy...

Anyway, less than a month to go, actually I guess it's just about 3 weeks!!

Thank you guys so much whoever posted domicile ideas, it's been a big help.

Here's what we've come up with so far for the domicile stuff:

    • Lease agreement wtih family

    • Shipping quote from ABF U-Pack Moving

    • Bank statements

    • Credit card statements

    • Professional license

    • Child care registration confirmation letter and canceled check of registration fee

    • One-way ticket purchase confirmation and trip itinerary

    • Car insurance quote

    • Driver’s license

    • Voter registration card

What do yall think? Any other ideas for other domicile proofs we could use?

Also I was wondering, do you think we need to explicitly state our lease agreement is with family or can we just say here's our lease agreement? Someone said they look at these family leases differently, ie, don't take them as seriously?

Also, does anyone know about voter registration cards, is it something you get once and then have forever? B/c mine is dated year 2000, so that really doesn't serve as any proof of anything at all - anyone know if there's a way to renew it??

Thanks for sharing everyone, it really helps a lot!

    Take care all.

  10. but

be certain - when coming through the POE -

that CBP has the 'current address' for the USCitizen Spouse's USA domicile -

if it's changed since filing the DS-230,

and if you didn't update it on interview day

you've GOT ONE SHOT to fix it

otherwise, expect yer green card to 'get lost' inside the USCIS system.

Darnell, I didn't quite understand your paragraph above... Can you explain and/or rephrase it?

Where/when is this "one shot to fix it" happening and what are its implications? Who is caring about this address and why does it need to be changed etc? Sorry I am confused by your paragraph above :-?

    Thx in advance for clarifying..

Also, given the fact that I wish to make POE and then come back for a few months to wrap-up work, WHAT SHOULD I state during my interview as "the date when I will be doing my POE" (IF THEY ask that question during the interview that is). Should I give the x-mas date or should I give the February date?

If I give the x-mas date, is the visa interviewer being given the impression that "that is my final move"?

So basically I am asking what POE date shall I declare (if I am required to declare) during the interview?

    THXXXX

  11. Are these things allowed?

    1) USC and applicant both move to USA upon POE (with visa in hand). However, applicant comes back to Canada for a few more months to wrap up business, etc?

In other words, is it allowed to say "we are going to make POE during x-mas holidays" but then me (the applicant/canadian) will come back to Canada for a few more months so that I can finish up and resign from my job etc?

Or do you have to resign (assuming your company cannot transfer you) your job prior to doing POE?

    2) What about if we schedule POE in say February or March, but then decide to take a XMAS trip to the USA. Is my x-mas entry into USA automatically going to turn into a POE (by customs/immigration officers who see my entry).

Again, am I allowed to make POE and then turn around and come back to Canada to finish up unfinished business (or even last few weeks/months of a job)?

    Thanks for your help all..

    Choles

  12. I know at least a few other people have done a lease agreement with their family in the US before moving out to their own place - we're doing the same and plan to show the lease agreement as part of our evidence of re-establishing domicile. Question is, should we go ahead and pay the first month/last month's rest like you would with an apartment and thereby have a cashed check to show as more proof? Or are we over-thinking the whole thing, is the lease sufficient? Anyone else who did a lease with family go ahead and put down first/last month rent?

    Thanks all!
