Call your local town hall. Our town hall has a "wedding Friday" once a month for people who just want the civil ceremony.
You would have to bring the marriage license though which you have to obtain in advance.

I wonder anyone has experience calling USCIS Customer Service at 1800-375-5283. How to get through to talk to their live assistance representative. I went though many button options following their voice instruction and couldn't find the specific button to get to a rep. Thanks a lot!!!
One of the options is "report problem with an application" or something like that. I called the other day and choosing that option I got a live person...

You are correct. It is not the case that all J-1s have a home residency requirement. (My wife's did not, for example.) It may be that there are some countries rom which all J-1s have HRR, that I do not know.
I second that: My J-1 states explicitly that I'm not subject to HRR.

I did a walk-in here in Detroit right after they opened in the morning. Make sure you have a good reason why you need to do the walk-in and cannot make the later appointment, that should help.
The ASC lady gave me a very annoyed look when I asked for the walk-in but hey, I interrupted her sudoku puzzles, so who can blame her...

I am also under an H-1B and don't have an Alien number.
On all the forms which we filled out, the Alien number was left blank (e.g. on the I-485 it says "A # (if any))
I believe most forms ask for the I-94 number also, so make sure to fill that one in.

Good afternoon.
I just wanted to say hi since I've been reading quite some posts over the last two months and also did some "benchmarking" by looking at some of your timelines...
My case got sent to the government on 12/21 and I was already getting worried that my bio appointment notice could have gotten lost but it finally arrived today. Seems like mine was more on the slow end compared to some of the other cases here.
No questions at this point, I just wanted to contribute some more data points to the group.

If your husband was born in Germany, the city where he was born/registered should be able to issue an international birth certificate for just 10 Euros.
I am still registered in Germany and my mom picked one up for me.
All the fields of the certificate are labeled in German/English/French and I believe even Spanish...
Duplicate Interview Notice for different dates
in Adjustment of Status from Work, Student, & Tourist Visas
Posted · Edited by ColtSeavers
Just FYI for you guys: apparently there was a system glitch at the USCIS which caused duplicate interview notices to go out. Those might have even be for different dates.
My firm's legal department received a note from USCIS informing them about the system glitch and that correction notices were being sent out to the applicants on Feb 24th. I received this notice today (see signature).
If you received duplicate interview notices for different dates but haven't received a correction I would advice to call the USCIS number and inquire about the interview date which is in their system to make sure you don't miss your interview...
