  1. My wife came to United States in K1 Visa and we applied SSN within 3 weeks of her Entry. We got married the 2nd month after entry and we applied for AOS/EAD/AP right before I-94 would expire.

we didn't get the SSN yet so we went to the SSN office in MD and they said that the file was closed because her I-94 expired a week ago now and we can't apply for ssn till she gets the green card.

    Does this make sense?

I don't find any reason why they couldn't issue the SSN in the first 2months when her IAD was valid.

can anybody suggest the next move we need to make?

    Thank you

  2. Hi, My wife entered in K1 visa and we got married 2 weeks back. We applied for SSN for her a week before our wedding and till now (its been 3 weeks) we didn't receive any. We went to SSN office today and they said, it has gone for homeland security check and can't tell how long it will take.

    My question is that,

Can we apply for AOS, EAD, AP at this point while waiting for the SSN to come?

    or

should we wait for SSN to come and then change her name in SSN and then apply for AOS?

Please let me know. Thank you.

  3. Thank you all for the encouragement over these months. Even though I didn't post much I was a constant everyday reader in the forum.

The interview was very thorough. They asked questions regarding relationship, finance, and eligibility for visa.

My fiancée took tons of evidence and proof of my 3 trips to India and I made sure I went on Valentines day too (that was a bonus). So our relationship part was a piece of cake to convince :)

Then they asked questions about my brothers, my parents and every single detail from what they do and where they reside and how did they choose the City to live etc. My fiancée did a fine job explaining everything and she said "do not know" for the the things she really didn't know. They were happy about it. So fellow petitioners, please let your beneficiaries communicate with every person in your family or at least make sure they are familiar with your family. Then they asked questions about my relationship with her family and she had lot of good pictures and everything to prove we are cool.

Then the financial part was easy cos we had 3 years of every financial document possible. They were keen on W2 and 1040 for 2 years.

Finally they had questions regarding the engagement pictures to make sure it is not a wedding. My fiancée took her time to explain how I proposed and then how we arranged for a formal event and how all the Christian formal engagement process works in India. They confirmed it with a guy working inside the embassy and when they were convinced that it is an engagement, The counsel said, "Congrats you are approved"

Now I am waiting for the POE, booked on British airways and they are going on strike now. Keeping fingers crossed.

  4. Congrats Sowmya, my fiancée got her visa in Chennai and is ready to board to USA too. Her interview experience was great but the Apollo doctor visit experience was rude and insulting in many ways. Hope we can report this doctor in some way. Anyway congrats again.

  5. I would worry more if your passport is expiring in the next few months or if the pages are worn out, because that seems to be a problem recently. Having your maiden name (or your husband's family name) is your right and no one can instruct you in any way to change yours. The only reason it would come in handy is when you go to apply for ssn or drivers license or any other long term databases, then it is worth it to have your husband name added in your passport so you don't have to do everything twice.

  6. Thanks everyone who answered my question, I contacted the embassy and here is the new updated rule this year.

    1. Petitioner Fiance(e) is not allowed to accompany the beneficiary for the interview.

    2. Can use the waiting room while the interview is taking place.

    3. The waiting room is on the other side of the interview so no point trying to sit there without phone.

  7. You are over the definitely over the 2009 Poverty Guidelines for the visa, but not that far. So I would suggest get all the resources you can and include more liquid assets. Being the economy now, having few thousands in the bank is a big deal. So you are good. Make sure you know if there are any credit/loan that exist too. Good Luck.

  8. The biggest tip you can give is to hang on to your passport and boarding pass and visa like your life depends on it (in fact it does). Many new comers will present everything to the people checking in the flights or immigration officers and will forget to get back their boarding passes or passport. Be very careful about that.

Also Last time I went to India, the immigration officer purposely dropped my connection flight boarding pass and pretended like he didn't notice. I pointed it out and then he gave it back to me without even making eye contact. So be very careful with your travel documents.

  9. My fiancée called the embassy at Chennai and they said no one but the beneficiary is allowed for the k1 interview. The person was rather impolite and hung up saying NO immediately. I am planning to fly down to Chennai to give support to my fiancée no matter what.

I have heard and read testimonies from Dec 2009 that people have gone in for the interviews together. Is this a new change in rule or it was just misinformation? Can anybody give me advice on this? Thank you.

  10. You got plenty of time to gather documents and gets things done 10 days before your interview. Don't worry you will be all fine. Did the petitioner already finished gathering all the necessary documents? Good luck for you interview.

Our papers are on the way to embassy, so we are hoping to get a date in early May.

  11. I have heard people say that Chennai embassy sends K1 packet3 and 4 combined, but seems like outdated information. can anybody who went through recently through Chennai confirm and explain how the process is different from separate packets? Thank you.
