  1. Hi! Thanks for the congrats- I'm so excited. I just went to the local SSN office here in pittsburgh, about 2 weeks after my POE - we were already married too, but I don't know if that did anything, cause I didn't have a certificate yet. I brought in my passport, with the k1 and I94 in it, and she processed it. There was even an issue with the spelling of my name (the officer at the border didn't put a space between my first name and middle initial) but the lady was super nice, and I got the card in 2 weeks. It's very clear on the card that I'm not authorized to work, but it was good enough for health insurance and banking purposes. Good luck!

    CONGRATS!

How did you get a SSN??? I was told I couldn't apply for one until I got my green card in....I wanted one so I could open a bank account and stuff....even if I can't work yet......and then I could put my car on the road and get my NYS license...since they won't do that without a SSN either!

  2. Yes - it says it'll come in 30 days. The contract is very time sensitive (for an opera production) - so no leeway. Thanks for responding!

I don't know the answer to that but since it is so recent, can you negotiate a start date that's a few weeks out contingent upon receipt of the GC? Did the email state that you'd receive your card within 30 days (or something along those lines)?

  3. Hi Everyone!

First of all I need to thank the creators of this site and every one who contributes - I try and help when I can, but I know there are so many people dedicated to helping others in this crazy journey, and I would like to thank all you strangers very very much.

Here's my question: I got the email from USCIS saying that my green card was in production (YES!!) but it's been such a fast timeline that I haven't received my EAD or AP yet. I got a job offer yesterday that I had to turn down because of lack of paper work, but I'm wondering if I can legally work even though I don't have the physical card? Can I accept this contract without the card? It looks like I'm a legal resident, but don't have any proof yet - is that ok? I do have a SSN (with the big ineligible to work stamped on it :S)

Thanks for helping - I hope this is clear!!

  4. Check to see if the state you're living in has an RBC - I'm not certain, but if you open an RBC in canada, you can open one in the states, and then transfer funds between those two accounts (I think). RBC is only in a handful of states, however - so this might not help too much.

    Good luck!

You would have to wire transfer from your US bank to your Canadian bank, expensive and has to also be done with currency change.

Some people use CUSTOM HOUSE. To transfer funds.

Can also mail bank drafts to family in Canada and have them deposit it to your account.

This is not an IR/CR issue, should be in the Canada forums.

  5. Hi,

I'm pretty sure I know this would be a bad idea - but I wanted to get an idea from the visa journey community! I got married on Nov 14th, and 5 weeks later I still don't have my marriage license. I called the Allegheny county office, and they said it might not be there for another 2 weeks - which I think is ridiculous. I'm wanting to file ASAP - but I know that with my green card application I'll get an RFE without the license. Can I still apply for an EAD and advanced parole to travel - and then when I get my marriage licencse send in a copy right away? Or do I wait and send it all together?

    Thanks for the advice?

  6. oops! Totally not clear - I meant the phone number to call to see if they were sent out. I'm worried that since I had to get a new passport, that the one they are sending isn't the same number that I used to imput my file at the CSC website. It's not late yet, but I need to have it by friday so I can POE on the weekend! Thanks!

  7. Hi,

    What number was this? Thanks!

Hi everyone, I had my interview for K1 Visa in Montreal on Oct 22nd and signed up for DHL but still have not seen any tracking number. I called the number that is listed on the website and they said Montreal has not shipped yet as once they ship it will list on website. DHL has not called me either and I called DHL and they said without a tracking number they can't do a search but that if the package arrives at the DHL depot that someone will call from DHL when it is ready for pickup. The lady that interviewed me at the Consulate gave me a letter and it says it can take 10 days. Anyone out there in the same boat? Please reply.

  8. I had my interview on the 26th too. I called DOS and I know my visa's been issued, but it has yet to be sent! DHL has no record of my reference number.

It sounds like I have the same letter as you MSR, but the woman who interviewed me said that I should have it in about a week. That would be this coming Tuesday for me.

  9. Hi All!

There's alot of interviews this month at the Montreal consulate (yay!) mine's next tuesday - and I'm signed up for a DHL pick up in Markham - but I've read that people are getting xpresspost enveloppes as well? What is better - I didn't know the xpresspost was an option. People seem to be getting their visas quickly after they're approved anyway, but I was just wondering what people are doing!

    Thanks!

  10. I wasn't asked this by GM... but I would just put a month/year if I were you. When I entered the US they never asked for my vehicle compliance letter. I think it comes in handy more when you want to register your vehicle, but I could be wrong. They are very easy going at the border where I cross.

I'm doing this with my honda. They have to issue the letter within a month of you entering the country. I'd wait till you have your interview date- Honda said they can issue the documents within 5-10 days of receiving my information. Faxing them tomorrow, my interview is Oct 26th, and I want my POE to be nov 7th. Hope this helps!

  11. Hi,

She'll definitely need a visa - J1 visa's deal with internships or volunteer position. If you search J1 visa you might be able to get more answers - otherwise she would have to get a temporary work permit.

    Hello

I have a question regarding "work" in the US as a Canadian citizen. A friend of mine back in Canada is looking at coming to the states next summer from May to August for a Co-op job she needs to complete for her Degree program. She is not sure whether she needs a visa for working or not for being in the states which would be for 4 months but if she's working would she need one?

  12. Hi Everyone!

Quick questions about the fees I have to pay at the interview. In my packet it says that if I paid everything to NVC - I don't owe the fee. Is that the $450 I spent at the beginning of the application - or was that to USCIS? Thanks for clarifying.

  13. Hi VJ friends.just wondering if you can ship personal belongings from Canada to USA before your K-1 visa is approved. Thank you

    Hi,

I would be very wary about doing this. I put some boxes of my things in my fiance's car the last time he came to visit and he was stopped at the border and wasn't allowed into the states with my things. The border guard said that my stuff wasn't allowed in the US until I got my visa. My fiance had to turn back to TO and bring everything back. Anyway, I wished I had called border services to confirm. You don't want to pay for all that shipping and then have it sent back! good luck!

  14. Hi!

I'm going through the Montreal consulate and I emailed them two weeks ago with this concern, but I haven't heard from them. I'm hoping someone here can help me. I filed my P3 packet in July and I know it's been logged in by the consulate and I'm just waiting for an available interview. The problem is that I have a new passport from the one I used to file with (still have the original, canceled one - it was going to expire in September, and obviously won't get an interview by then) - as well I'm moving to a new city and have a new job (contract work). So much of the information I provided on the DS-160 and the 156 needs to be updated. Should I just bring the updated forms (with the originals as well) to the interview. Otherwise how do i contact someone at the consulate with my question - as they have obviously not responded to my email. Thanks so much!

  15. Hi! I've been perusing other people's timelines and have noticed that they have a date for when the consulate logged in their P3 package. I'm wondering how you got this information - I sent mine to the Montreal Consulate, and I know they received my package from canada post, but that's it. As well, I have a new passport number. I emailed them two weeks ago and still nothing - will I be ok, or how do I give them this new info?

    Thanks for the help! :)

  16. Sorry, I posted this same question a few minutes ago in the Canada forum, but I kinda need an answer as soon as possible. I'm at a friend's house using her computer right now so I don't have much time...

This is frustrating! I don't have a photo right now, but will bring it to Montreal with me. I've been reading alot on VJ that you can just try to upload any pic from your computer, then when it fails you can click on "continue without photo." Well when I click on that it just sends me back to the first page. I can't see any way to get past this stage. I know that others here have managed to get past the photo stage without successfully uploading a photo. How do you do that?? Suggestions? :help:

It's incredibly frustrating! What you have to do is actually attempt to upload a photo when they deny the uploaded photo then it will let you proceed so that you can just attach a physical photo to the confirmation sheet you send with the rest of the P3. Hope this helps!
