  1. Hi,

I heard information about a fee increase that was in affect beginning July 13, 2010. I came across the fee for the K-1 Visa which is still at $455.00, but then read that there is a new fee of $350.00 which is the cost for the interview at the US consulate.

I also read on VJ that the K-1 Visa decreased to an amount of $350.00. I am confused. There is a lot of different posts I have been reading and I am not sure which is accurate. Can somebody confirm what is correct change with the charges for the K-1 Visa?

    Greatly appreciated.

  2. Thanks so much for all your help! Do you happen to know the fees for the CR-1 Visa? Also, when you say 'not past the date you would normally be allowed to stay', are you referring to the six months that I would be allowed to stay in the US?

That's also a great suggestion about coming back after getting married in the US to continue working and saving money. Do I legally have to stay back in Canada until the CR-1 is approved? (I'm assuming I do if I have to attend interviews and medicals, etc.)

Thanks again! I really appreciate all the responses I've received.

  3. Actually, going over the VJ checklist it looks like the only thing I would really need to get done here is a passport photo and possibly get copies of pictures of the both of us here, and then the rest of the checklist can be completed when I am in the US. I thought there was a copy of my birth certificate and passport needed as well. Can somebody point out to me if I am missing something? Thanks!

  4. Oh okay, thanks. I had no idea until now! Also, my partner and I are getting ready to start the paperwork for the K-1 visa in February. Is there a list on the forum of everything you need? ie: letter of intent, I-129F form, pictures, e-mails, etc. I know those are some of the required documents when you file the petition, but I am not sure on everything that needs to be sent in while we file the I-129F petition form, as well as all the documents. I've visited the USCIS website, and browsed through the topics on here, but it can be very confusing when you get different responses!

    Thanks!

  5. Thanks for the replies. Is the process for the AOS and EAD very similar to obtaining a visa; the length of time it takes to be approved, etc? I understand that it varies from case to case, but is there an estimated guess such as six months before being able to actually bring in some income? ha ha. Thanks for all the help!

  6. After all the visa processing is through, (K-1 in my situation) and approved; after my partner and I get married do I have to wait a certain amount of time before I am eligible to work? I am under the impression I need to file for a "work authorization form" of some sort. Can anybody explain to me how this process works after marriage, and can one apply for a "work authorization form" while in the K-1 process?

    Thanks!

  7. Did 15 yrs in the Cdn Armed Forces. Too easy to go and talk with an USA Armed Forces Recruiter. I'm sure one can find out a lot of info online, they may even have some type of live chat

That's a great idea. My brother has been in the CF for seventeen years. I will check into speaking with a recruiter online. Thank you!

  8. Oops, I just realized I should have posted this topic in the 'job' thread. Perhaps it can be moved to the appropriate thread?

I never even thought about Military Police. I have friends who are in the Canadian Forces and I know about the process to join with them, but I don't know anything about the process with the United States Military.

  9. Right. I figured for most, if not all states require one to be a US citizen. The reason for my question is because I am currently a Law Enforcement applicant here in Canada, and quite close to finishing up the entire process. A new path has appeared in my life and therefore I have changed plans. I want to continue with my career goals and obtain employment as an LEO. I am hoping that I can do so when I start my new life in the United States.

  10. Well, I think I have found the answer on my own. According to Passport Canada I can just cross out my old address and write my new address in the passport. So, I assume that when we file the K-1 documents there shouldn't be any discrepancies with my new address.

Any other advice would be great, and if not, this thread can be closed and deleted!

    Thanks!!

  11. Hi there,

My partner and I are preparing to file for the K-1 Visa in the next month or so. I recently moved, and my passport and drivers license has listed my old address. I am going to change the address on my drivers license this week, but as far as my passport indicating an old address, when we file for the K-1 Visa should I just put my new address on all the forms? I am worried that it may present a problem that I have a different address on my passport.

    Thanks in advance.

PS. This site has been extremely helpful. There are a lot of emotions and thoughts that go along with this entire process, and I'm at the very beginning stage.. I know it's going to be extensive and I'm glad that there is a support network such as VJ to help others like myself get through the process.
