  1. evening all,

It's my understanding that if you have foreign assets back in the UK over $10,000 you have to report them to the IRS or face a hefty fine. I have an old pension in the UK slightly over this amount (which I'd desperately like to get rid of, it's more hassle than anything!). I have no problem reporting this, but does anyone know if it can impact your tax liability in the US? I didn't withdraw any money from it last year nor am I able to given my age. I'm consulting a tax expert on this, but I was wondering if anyone here had first hand experience.

Honestly, if anyone knows how to make this pension go away I'd really appreciate it. Given that I never plan to live in the UK again, I have no intention of ever collecting it. I'd happily donate it to charity or transfer it to a relative in the UK if that's possible.

  2. Received the approval letter today. Cannot believe it! We didn't even need an interview. After the trouble we had getting the fiance visa, this is a huge relief.

  7. Hi all,

My husband (a perm. resident w/greencard) passed his written exam for a learner's permit today in Rhode Island. When he went to schedule the road test for the proper license, they said he'd have to bring proof of insurance on the day. I don't drive due to a disability, so I can't put him on my own insurance or provide him with a vehicle. My parents may be able to lend him their car. Their insurance company said that they cover other drivers who borrow the car with their permission. If we get a notarized letter from my parents stating that they give him permission to borrow their car for the road test along with a copy of their insurance coverage, will this be good enough? We don't want to buy a car at this time. We just want him to have the license for cases where he needs to rent one or to use our local Zip Car service. There's also the possibility that he may get a job offer that requires commuting and we all of a sudden do need to buy a car, so we want to have it now rather than have a good job opportunity pass him by.

  8. My husband has his EAD and AP now. GC interview in on Monday. He has a job offer, but I'm not sure if he'll get the EAD to the HR office before the Christmas break. Do they take the EAD away at the interview? If so, will he just have to wait for the green card to come in the mail before he can provide evidence of working rights to the potential employer?

AH! So nervous about the interview next week.

  9. Guess what? We got our interview notice for AOS dated on January 19,2011... so happy that we finally received it!!:=)))

FYI.. I checked online almost everyday and kinda worried since no touches at all after our biometric schedule( AOS, EAD & AP.)And now..I got the precious mail..( Thanks God)!!

Oh! we never recieve any EAD and AP approval though;-)) Does anyone have the same case with us?

We have an interview scheduled with no AP or EAD as well.

  10. Just curious to know, Did you got touches after your biometric schedule?

Or just got the a letter from USCIS regarding your interview appointment for Dec 27?

No touches for us after my biometric schedule..and looks like for October Filer I was the only one no touches...so kinda worried though:=((

We had a touch on the day of the biometrics appointment and then again on the following Monday.

I'm guessing a touch is the result of a bar code swipe of the file, which the case workers are probably instructed to do every time they work on a file. I could see a busy case worker forgetting to scan absolutely everything.

  11. I think I'm going to have a heart attack... I need that GC so bad before Jan 15th. NSF is giving me a full grant for Grad studies, tuition and stipend, all included, if i'm resident of course... I wish I had my interview on Dec 27th too...

Is that the National Science Foundation? I really hope you hear back soon, especially since it would be in the interest of the US (we need more scientists). My local office has a reputation for processing these things really quickly. I looked at other timelines, and it looks like others in this area are having the same experience.

  12. Is there some loop hole in the law that is stopping them from enforcing it? Like I said, he spoke to senior level USCIS staff about this, and they were trying to help him and give him advice about getting the EAD card before the current one expires. Like I said, I am really confused and concerned. None of this adds up to me. I'm not trying to say I think I'm right and your wrong blah, blah, blah. I'm just trying to make sense of a very concerning situation. I mean, you got a piece of paper saying your authorized to work, you pass E-Verify, you talk with USCIS officials. Of course you're going to assume you're doing the right thing.

  13. This seems very confusing to me. What is a person supposed to think when they get a stamp that says 'authorized to work'? Aside from that it went through E-Verify and we discussed it with a senior staff member from USCIS. If it wasn't legal, I'm thinking it wouldn't have come back as authorized to work on E-Verify or the senior USCIS agent would have said something. Aside from that, wouldn't CBP be in trouble for issuing misleading documents by now? I'm thinking hundreds of people must use these temp EADs every year. That's like the Dept. of Labor handing out driving licenses and then someone gets pulled over for not having a license from the local Dept. of Motor Vehicles. USCIS is always claiming that E-Verify is the end all for proving someone's right to work. I'm thinking if someone is approved, that's it.

  14. I'm really confused and concerned. I know someone who was recently given a temp job by an E_Verify employer who had the JFK temp EAD. I work for the government myself and have had some involvement with E-Verify. As far as I can see, all staff must go through the system. You can't skip one or look the other way out of fear that someone won't be approved. He even had to wait several days before he could start work while they completed all checks, This employer regularly hires immigrants of all different backgrounds, so I feel like their HR staff would be fairly competent. They were very clear with him that he has to stop working once the temp EAD expires until the new document comes in the mail (probably the next few weeks). At the biometrics appointment he told a senior level member of staff that he was working with the stamp and had been hired by an E Verify employer. The staff member never questioned it and talked to him at some length about what to do if it was getting close to the expiration date and he hadn't received the card yet. This man also mentioned that he had worked for USCIS for many years.

If this was all illegal, surely we would have been told by now?

  15. Had the biometric yesterday. Everything went well and we now have a touch registering online for that day. The staff at the Rhode Island ASC office were VERY nice and helpful. Hope we hear back about our EAD soon, as my husband is currently working for a university on a temp EAD (the passport stamp from JFK) and we'd like him to be able to continue to do so. ::fingers crossed::
