Once we get our visa and I get to the US (hopefully by early 2010... waiting for packet 4 now!), we're going to get legally married there as required by the K1 process. It will be a small, private ceremony with no family or friends present.
And we're planning our "real" ceremony for September 2010 in my hometown in New Brunswick.
My question is about who can officiate. (We're not religious so not having a priest/minister/etc. We'd like to have a friend do the ceremony.) Since we will already have our marriage certificate from the US wedding and therefore not filing a Canadian marriage certificate, does that mean that the officiant at our Canadian wedding does not have to be a "registered officiant" and therefore not have to go through all the procedures to become registered?
I'm hoping people who have done their "second" and non-legal wedding in Canada (or another beneficiary's home country) can share their wisdom with me!
Thank you!!!

Whoo hoo! Add us! Dec 9, 2009
Congratulations! That's reassuring for me because we're about a month behind you in the timeline (no packet 3 yet). BTW, I assumed you meant Dec 9, 2010!

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering about how to obtain a police certificate from the Dominican Republic, if I'm not living there and haven't been for many years, and no longer have any close contacts there.
I'm Canadian and did an internship in the Dominican Republic from September 2001 to June 2002 (about 9 months, with a few weeks' trip home to Canada in December). We have just received our NOA2 email
and I am expecting that the embassy will require a DR police certificate. And from what I can tell, the application needs to be made in person at the office in Santo Domingo and the certificate picked up in person later. I've also heard it might have to be notarized. However, I'm not living there and don't really want to have to travel there right now.
Could anyone help me find out the best way to get this certificate? Does anyone have any experience with this?
I called the Dominican Consulate in Ottawa to see if they could help, and eventually they said the could perform the service for a fee of $200... a little steep so I'd like to avoid it if possible.
Thank you for any help you can offer!

Funny, I was just snuggling my cat as you wrote that. I'll see if he's available on our wedding date.
CdnMN, what are the sensitive phrases you're referring to?
