  1. I think the law is ridiculous. According the constitution, some powers belong to the states, and some to the federal government - immigration enforcement being one of the federal powers. This law completely muddles the two, and I'm sure will have negative impact on communities and local economies. I watched an interesting documentary last night "Liberty 9500" that highlighted a similar situation in Virginia...

  2. This has me befuddled. Exactly what "papers" would one present if pulled over in Arizona because the officer suspected that driver of being an illegal immigrant?

A US born citizen would likely not have his/her birth cert on hand, and most Americans don't even have a passport, let alone drive around with it in their glove compartment.

A Naturalized citizen probably isn't going to be carrying around their Naturalization certificate, which costs nearly $400 to replace if damaged/lost, and from what I understood at my husband's recent ceremony....it's not even legal to photocopy it, except for immigration purposes. A naturalized citizen may or may not have a US passport, but then again, aren't going to be driving to work etc with it.

Obviously neither example will have proof of legal residency with a green card.

So, what then...detainment until proof can be presented, status verified? Guilty until proven innocent? And, based on what? An accent? Skin tone?

  3. Congratulations to all who have passed their interviews! Whoo hoo!!

  4. My husband passed the interview today! He was approved! And there was a Oath ceremony ONE HOUR after the interview, so we don't have to go back again!!! :)

The interview took about 15 minutes.

For the history/gov't/civic, he was asked these 6 questions:

"How many US Sentors are there?" "If the President and Vice President can no longer serve, who becomes the President?" "How many judges are on the Supreme Court?" "Name one branch or part of the government." "What did the Declartation of Independence do?" "What does the President's cabinet do?"

He was asked to write: "Washington is the captial."

He was asked to read: "When is Independence Day?"

Study hard, and all will be fine. :)

    YAY IT'S OVER!!!!!!!! Whoo hooo!!!!!!!

  5. "If you disclosed it in your N-400 you can bring it up at the interview..."

Well, he put the trips down on his application and will bring the transcript of his itinerary for back up should they push the issue, but he wasn't planning on volunteering that the stamp was missing (we didn't even notice that until last night.)

And yeah, his greencard got scanned, he got the fingerprints and the retinal scan...shouldn't be hard to track down that he went thru immigration on said date last year.

Thanks so much for your help....I am thankful that it sounds like others have had this happen it and hasn't caused any problems.

It's just lame tho that they'd not stamp the darn thing!!!!! Urrrgggh...

  6. I'm getting everything organized for hubby's Naturalization interview on Thursday, and while looking thru his passport noticed that on our trip back to Lao last year, the Seattle airport didn't stamp his passport upon re-entry!!

We have the intinerary from the Airline, but other than than....nothing (I can't find the ticket stubs!)

Is this going to be a problem??? We didn't think to check his passport at the time last year. We were so tired and jet lagged from the flight it didn't even cross our minds.

    Will this disqualify him?????

  7. Massive congrats to everyone who's already passed the interview!! Whoo hoo!! And also for those who are getting the appointment notice! It's so EXCITING!!!

I hope my hubby passes on the first interview, that it isn't 'continued' and that he too can do the oath ceremony on the 4th of July at the Seattle Center!!!! We got the interview notice with in 1 week after the biometrics. Made me wonder if that wasn't the goal....

Praying, hoping that all goes well. He's certainly studied the 100 questions enough. He knows them better than I do!

  8. My husband has a good grasp of the English language, but there are some terms used in the N-400 application (a lot of them, actually) that are frankly *not* heard on an everday basis and despite having gone through the application many times together in mock interviews, there are times when he's forget some of the language & meaning.

I've told him if he feels like this during the interview itself to be honest, say he didn't understand & ask the IO to repeat the question another way.

I'm hopeful that most IO's take into account and surmise the applicant's English language level, but I'm wondering...to what degree?

Can anyone here share their experience with me? He's feeling very confident, but is naturally also nervous because it's such an important day....also, it'll be different since I can't be in the room with him for moral support.

Any tips, reassurances, experiences would be most appreciated!

    Thanks!

  9. My husband and I sent his Naturalization Application on March 21. Last Tuesday, on May 8th, he went for Biometrics. Yesterday we got the Interview Notice in the mail...he's scheduled exactly one month from yesterday. Isn't that pretty speedy?? From everything I've read from my NoLo book and the Seattle Field office processing times also indicated that post biometrics, the interview notice comes w/in 1-2 months and within 2 weeks prior to the interview date.

So, wow. We're surprised. Shocked. :wow:

He's been studying the Civics Questions for months now. Knows them all by heart (better than I do!) That's not an issue. Reading: Fine. Writing: should be okay, although there may be some difficulty with some synonyms. He's got the study guide for the words and is likewise studying those diligently.

What else should we be doing to prepare? How to study the application itself in preparation for the interview?

What to bring? Should he bring my original birth certificate? or is a copy ok? his birth certificate? IRS tax transcripts? The whole copy of the file we sent to USCIS? Passport photos?

    Please advise.

We knoweth not what to do.

  10. Perhaps because my spouse and I don't have alot of 'stuff' to show - we don't own a home, property, and have few bills in general - it worked out to our benefit to oversupply the documentation we could provide to show co-mingling. And, imo, supplying the most recent bills don't really prove much. If I were reviewing such a file, I'd be incline to send out an RFE in such a situation. Why? Someone could easily just 'add' someone to an account for show for it. So, with that in mind, we wanted to show that from the date of the Conditional Residency being granted, every aspect of our lives has been intertwined.

In any event, the excessive paperwork didn't hurt us at all, was easy enough to assemble and certainly didn't slow USCIS down any!

I'm not saying it's the best way, I'm no expert, but just looking at our particular situation, I'm happy with the outcome and wouldn't hesitate to suggest others applying for ROC send in as much 2-year history as possible.

  11. We included all the pages, going back 2 years, of everything that we had. Everything. If it was something, like a new credit card that we had for less than the 2 years, we included every statement that we had accrued until our application date.

We put it all (4+ lbs worth) in a three-ring binder with plastic sleeves and dividers - don't stress about changing to the ACCO thing. I stressed about that too, but ultimately decided to just file it as I had already arranged it, and it worked out just fine!!

I'm all for the more evidence the better. We over prepared both times (for the AOS and the ROC) and both times, it paid off quite well.

  12. Oh, forgot to note the status with the email we got today:

    Current Status: Approval notice sent.

On November 24, 2009, we mailed you a notice that we have approved this CRI89 PETITION TO REMOVE CONDITIONS OF PERMANENT RESIDENT STATUS RECEIVED.

What is confusing is that we were already informed that we were approved back on the 19th and when we looked online that day, our case was in the final step - card production. Now we're a step backward in post-decision activity. ???
