Aww...It's nice too, that they were able to accomodate both you and your wife on the same day, and that they gave your son a cookie too. Lol..funny that they asked those N-445 questions for what you did in the last 2 hours! Hmm..wonder what would have happened if you answered "yes" to any of those...just kidding. Given some upcoming travel in mid-December for business and associated visa processing times, I went to the Philadelphia Passport Agency office this morning with a letter on my company letterhead with travel details and ended up getting my passport issued on the spot. This also was spurred by my own insecurity of waiting for my only and precious naturalization certificate risking first-class mail!! (with previous personal experience of lost/misplaced passport by US Post......). Updated list below.

Hello All,
Had our interview in Mt. Laurel NJ today. Passed the test (Questions: Who is the father of our nation?; Name a war fought in the 1900's by the USA; Which month are federal elections held?; What is the length of term for a US Senator?; the other two I don't remember.....).
When we walked in at 10AM for our 10:20AM (my wife) and 10:40AM (my) interviews, PARKING LOT FOR ABSOLUTELY FULL because there was a morning oath ceremony going on. Everyone there was very very nice right from the beginning (one is not used to the INS/USCIS people being anything other than rude and this was indeed a very pleasant experience).
Also, it substantially appeared that even accompanying family members were allowed into the interview rooms!! (I saw at least 3 groups of 2+ people go into interview rooms for their naturalization interviews!)
I got called in at 10:15 and I figure my wife (who was also accompanied by our 2 year old) was called in immediately thereafter). After I was done with my interview, the IO was kind enough to escort me to the room where my wife was being interviewed where my wife's IO was busy offering my 2 year old a cookie!!
Both the IO's were particularly very nice
. My IO was particularly funny and kept making a whole bunch of jokes. With both my wife and I having name changes to process, had expected to wait for a judicial oath ceremony. Surprise of all.....at Mt. Laurel, NJ, their same day oath includes judicial oaths!! As soon as I was done with my interview, my IO goes "It appears you have basically already sacrificed your day for being part of this country - how about we make the most of it, and you come in and take your oath this afternoon?". I replied something like "but my wife is also being interviewed in some other room...." and he says he will make sure she is also going to get into the same oath ceremony!!!
Went back to the place at 3PM. There were about 40~50 people for the oath ceremony. After checking the minor paperwork (most were there for the same day oath) and the IO who had interviewed my wife was around jokingly asking if anyone had gotten married, got divorced, or had a kid between the time they had their interview and 2~3 hrs later!! He then did ask if anyone had gone out celebrating and gotten arrested, or had gotten a ticket. They let any and all accompanying family members into the ceremony room (standing room only crowd). Whoe ceremony was done by 4PM. Thus got sworn in as a USC this afternoon!!! I am now a US Citizen!

If you donor didn't pay income taxes on that $40K gift, you do, they get you one way or the other. Really don't have to earn any money to file a return, can put in all zeros for income, but show your deductions. Been filing returns for my step daughter, with part time jobs, just so she can get ten bucks back. Required evidence is in the M-476 manual, download and read it.
Per M-476:
"If you have ever failed to file an income tax return since you became a Permanent Resident, send:
All correspondence with the IRS regarding your failure to file.
If you have any federal, state or local taxes that are overdue, send:
A signed agreement from the IRS or state or local tax office showing that you have filed a tax return and arranged to pay the taxes you owe; and
Documentation from the IRS or state or local tax office showing the current status of your repayment program."
As NickD points out, even if your income was 0, the law requires you to file taxes. To that end, you may want to file your returns for the last few years anyway (note that given, based on what you mention, you don't owe any taxes, IRS cannot assess a penalty and you should perhaps be OK (per my non-professional understanding of tax laws) - and thus you will have actually filed your taxes to satisfy USCIS). The taxes on the $40K gift, of course, could be an issue - regardless, strongly suggest you actually talk to a tax professional on this matter.

Long story short. Had business, money, properties... lost everything, ended up homeless. For almost a year. Survived. Sent N-400 and had FP done and received an e-mail notifying me I'd soon have an interview scheduled (e-mail came a few days ago).
What can I tell them? Truth of course. So, here is the truth:
- I made $0.00 in last three years but I received $40,000.00 gift from a friend two years ago and while livign out of that money I have,
- published two tech publications with two different co-authors, both American experts at the very top of their games (Ph.D.s, fantastic references),
- started a serious Hollywood deal (no money yet - its in development phase) with real people at the very top of the holy woods,
- developed a new business and recently even made few bucks and am looking for funding given how big the projects we're working on are.
Bottom line -- I've not been a bum during the last three years; a "bum" in a sense that I have not cried over my sad destiny but have worked very hard, fought like a maniac and now can see the light at the end of the tunnel. But, no tax returns and no money.
What to expect?
Are you applying based on a 5 year permanent residency or using a married-to-USC - 3 yr. residency? If you are applying based on 5 year permanent residency, they don't ask for tax returns, do they?

Is there a list of USCIS locations and if they offer same-day oaths somewhere on VJ? also, would be nice to know how often/the actual schedule of judicial oath's at the various offices.....
I did search (both here as well as USCIS's website)....but couldn't find anything....other than manually looking through posts and putting together a list from people's first hand experiences....but that still doesn't give a list going forward.....

Got the "case transferred to your local office for interview" e-mail early this morning. Typically how long to get the interview letter after that?
Looks like the FBI works really fast (f-prints taken on the 16th and the whole process of data transfer from ASC to FBI to background check to data transfer/approval to USCIS was done in two working days!!

I have had border guards that were in a hurry and others that asked me where I was overseas and even skimmed through my passport, but they have never looked at it close enough to see the stamps or dates for that matter. I entered Europe in Amsterdam and got my entry stamp there but later went from Spain to Switzerland and then to Hong Kong and never received an exit stamp for the e.u. (which I did when I left through amsterdam on another trip). So exit stamps are hit and miss.
If there is an exit passport stamping process (have never been to China but most countries, including Europe, have outgoing passport stamping) typically ask you how you are going to enter the destination country (they ask for your greencard/look for visa stamp on passport etc.)...If not the passport control people, the airline will definitely ask this, since otherwise, they are financially responsible for transporting someone back if they are found to be inadmissible in the USA....

We had our fingerprint appointments at 2PM today at the Philadelphia ASC. We showed up there at 1:35PM with our two kids in tow. There were only about 2 people ahead of us. We were surprised to find that they even have a separate code for people with children (with "with child" written on our forms) such that one could stay at the waiting area while the other could go get fingerprints done first and the second would get fingerprints done immediately thereafter without waiting in line!!
People were nice and things moved pretty fast. We were done and out of there before 2PM!!
The front-desk person at the ASC actually mentioned that it was good that we showed up early for a Friday afternoon appointment, since the Friday afternoon and Saturday appointments tend to be very very crowded and typically lead to long wait times if you don't show up early.
...now the wait for the interview letter.....

One can routinely get multiple copies of birth certificates (easily as well, especially if you are still in the same town; at least thats true for Pennsylvania and NJ). Similarly, is it possible to have multiple naturalization cert's issued as well?
It didn't bother me to send the original birth certificates of my kids for their passports since I have multiple official ones, but potentially sending my "hard to replace" and "only" cert of naturalization to obtain my passport is rather daunting!

Interestingly, got only one fingerprint notification (both my wife and I applied together) - probably will get the other one in the mail tomorrow.....online status for both shows as RFE's having been sent out on September 24th.

Snj_immigrant-For me, I checked it right away, as soon as I got the NOA (dated 09/15/09, I got it on 09/19/09)...
No problems there (lol..though it was slow to load on my dial-up internet computer).
Perhaps they are doing an upgrade on their system now, so if it doesn't work now, keep on trying again later on....
Oh and when you enter your case..Do this: NBC*(followed by the rest of the nine numbers of your case)...

Thanks. It is probably that their system is still being updated etc. (they do say that they are going to come out with a brand new website in a few days/weeks......will keep trying....
snj inmigrant:Are you using your NBC*numbers, you have to used even the symbol*. I hope that it is the problem. In my case I could see it rigth away.
maryces21, yes I am using the NBC* number (with the *).
Maryces21-Sorry that the formating looked odd for you. Likewise, it looked odd for me before I 'fixed' it, as everything gets out of the lines that way too. And hence, I wondered if it was a screen size and/or computer issue...So I tried fixing it again...And am wondering what works now, since it doesn't work for you again...
So, what exactly is the problem on your end, in terms of the lines? Are the lines too long, too short, or something else?
I can try 'fixing' it again...As soon as I figure out what the problem is...
Anyone else experiencing screen problems with the list too?
Don't worry, we'll find a 'happy medium' somewhere...

Ant+D+A:When you fixed the format, the list in my screen looks weird, are we using the same format. Or maybe it is my screen? but it is the same thing at both computers home and work. I already talked to wannabe and he was the one that fixed for me, so I could see it in my screen. When you change the format everything gets out of the lines. It is anyway we can agree in a format that works for everyone?
On all my 3 screens I see Ant's "corrected" version correctly while maryces21's version looks slightly mixed up. Probably has to do with screen resolution settings......

How long does it usually take for the case to show up online? I cannot add my case number to my "online" portfolio on USCIS' website since it says case cannot be found - I figure it is because their system will probably be updated in a few days (doing "case status" online also says case cannot be found) - but what have your experiences been on this?

Got the NOA's in the mail today! I am assuming the date for the NOA1 column is the "priority date" (in which case they issued me a priority date before they cashed my check!!).....

Should I expect to get an e-mail notification from USCIS when they send me the NOA, or is the mail the only source? From what I read (about camping out on the mailbox) I figure snail-mail is the only route - but just making sure.....

They just cashed our checks (both my wife and I have applied). On one, I can clearly read every number they have written on the back. Is the case number (which allows me to track progress online) one of them? If so, what is the format that I should look for?

Sent ours in two envelopes within a single larger mailing envelope and it worked out well....
