SSN K-1 Authorization: This file is an notice to all SSA offices that authorizes any valid K-1 holder to be issued a SSN. You do NOT need a EAD to get a SSN while you have a vaild K-1. Bring this memo with you! Not all offices are aware that you can be issued a SSN and they may tell you that you need an EAD!

After the K1 is issued and I travel to the US (from Canada) to get married to my fiancee - do I then have to stay in the US until the other paperwork (I believe its the change of status paperwork, possibly CR1?) is complete or do I have to come back to Canada to await that paper work to be done?

I'm in the same boat as you - but moving to Fl instead. Nights like tonight when we're expecting BUCKETS of snow/ice I really wish I was there YESTERDAY!

I don't know if we're going to file ourselves or use an attorney yet either.. but I do know that the state of Fl will not issue a marriage license to non US citizens without proper immigration documentation. So that means K1 path for us

Who knows - maybe we'll end up filing around the same time and wave at each other while waiting for the interview to be over with

My fiancee and I have located an attorney however we cannot find much information on how the office operates/works.

Has anyone used the offices of Joel J. Turney for their immigration filing?

They have good advertizing however I don't require lots of money spent on attracting couples in. I would like to see happy satisfied couples and if there are any complaints what are they for.

It's so hard to be trusting of a stranger who holds our future in their hands with no guarantee of not being scammed.

Any suggestion guys/gals?

I am not sure what way to go with my studies. My credits will transfer over however my biggest fear is that the education I've already paid for will become stale if I wait the year.

What I was thinking was (from what I have been told which could be very wrong) I will be allowed into the country on my K1 visa to get married but then i have to come back until the rest of the immigration completes. If I apply for my FL drivers license and SS cards will that not establish my residency? If one cannot do that.. do you not establish residency when you immigrate to a particular state by default? If so why then do i have to be in FL for a year before paying instate fees (vs out of state fees).

Someone asked where I'll end up - it will be St. Petersburg, Fl.

The whole immigration thing, I find, so confusing. Add that on top of nursing studies and one can go mad :S

My fiancee lives in Florida and we will be starting the filing process in the near future for me to immigrate over to him. I have also started my nursing degree and wish to transfer whatever credits I have gained to the post secondary systems over there. I have interviewed the universities and found one that I like and have all the paperwork so that when I am ready to go I know what to do.

Thing is - in order to be "considered" a resident of Florida i have to have been there for a year or I pay out of state/country student fees; which are much like our out of country student fees - triple the cost! I know that I would have to have a Florida drivers license and a Social Security card however if I get a social security card am I not considered a foreigner for the school I am presently in?

Is there any way that I can do this without taking a year off of my studies (besides finishing out a 4 year degree here)? We have been apart so long - I'd really rather not be apart for another 4 years!

I really don't know which way to go with this and would truly appreciate any direction for researching it.

This being detained for strange things is the MAIN reason i got my Nexus pass. After i had mine (took about 8 months) i got one for my daughter.

Now I never get stopped.

If i cross with someone else in the car and go through customs they ask me the most BIZARRE questions. One guy even asked me if i was from the Bahamas. I looked up to him and said the Bahamas?! He said oh ya your white.. i guess not and let me go. Rude - i imagine there are white people in the Bahamas.. but still.

I did notice that it says to send the fees but it does not say what the fees are. How bizarre is that.

I hope to start this journey this winter. I think it would be awesome to start it on Halloween!

I am the Canadian who is going over to the US. We are happy but cannot get engaged yet due to divorce paperwork. I am doing a bit of advance research as I have no idea where to even start this process. I just want to be sure we can do this right so i can be allowed to go back and forth without hassle. (i have my last remaining parent in nursing care and have to come back and forth frequently)

I already have my Nexus pass however that does not give me permission to stay there any longer then 60/90 days without return. Without work for that period of time i cannot have my household here kept up. Sorta hard to pay rent when your not working. So I'm at a loss.

We have been told just get married and i will automatically be given my green card the day after (which i think is fairy tale stories) I have been told get married and i can file and i will get automatic green card status but it can take 8 months. In which time i CANT cross the border (which is not an option with a sick parent) We also have been told this entire process can take YEARS to complete.

My other concern is my 16 year old daughter. Will she be allowed in with me? I won't leave her behind with her father. If it takes years to complete will she then become too old to piggy back of mum sorta thing?

Lost lost lost..... any suggestions? I've looked at the boards with all the forms and that is just SO confusing!!

I'm willing to answer questions if its needed for a good answer....
