Yes, technically he is my husband as of a couple of weeks, still getting used to calling him that
On the marriage certificate I stated that my last name will change and I was told I should change it within 30 days. I was just wondering if I put Elisa "Baral" as stated on the marriage certificate instead of Elisa "Dahlgren-Castilla" (which is stated on my social security card) if that would cause an issue. That is a great suggestion, to put proof of my name change with the application so there are no issues with that. Thanks again!
She shouldn't be your fiancée but your wife if you are completing this form.. Assuming you got married and processing your AOS..
If you are sending this application we are assuming you got married, and you have all the documentation required. If you named was not changed during the marriage ceremony and you are planning to change it soon, suggestion will be to process the name change, provide proof and then sent the package..
i think a week waiting is best than a few possible additional months of process and possible money spend..
change your profile from K-1 to AOS

Thanks all for the advice! I figured he was incorrectly turned away. However, he called me after the first time he was turned away and I told him to go back and show them that document (which I had the parts highlighted) and they still turned him away. My brother and grandmother were both with him and my grandma told me that its changed since we are legally married now ... I haven't heard of that after doing reserach on it so I thought I would check VJ first before taking time off work to go back with him and apply. I will insist on speaking with a supervisor. Thanks again!

Under Part 1 B of the I-485 form, it asks to list the name of your spouse. I am filling this our for my fiance, so I am the spouse. I have not yet changed my legal name to his last name yet. Should I wait until I change my legal name before sending in the application or should I just list it was my maiden name? (I wont have time to go in to change my name until next week and I want to send out the AOS application asap. I just don't want this to cause any problems in the application. Thanks in advance!

My fiance moved here on May 21st, 2010, so about a month ago. We were legally married on June 4th. He went last week to apply for his social security card (I did not go with him), and they asked him if he was married and told him that he needs to go to USCIS to apply for employment authorization and green card. We are in the process of the paperwork for AOS, however, I was under the impression that he can still apply for his social security card and that it would just state that he is eligible to work only with a seperate EAD card. Under the social security card guide in visa journey, it states that some staff are not aware that a K-1 Visa Holder is eligible to file for a SSN and to also bring a copy of the RM00203.500 paying attention to section C (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203500)as a friendly reminder so we are not turned away incorrectly. He brought that with him and he was still turned away. Is it possible that because we are married, he is unable to obtain a social security card until after we apply for AOS or was he incorrectly turned away? He went back a second time after I explained to him to show them that RM00203.500 and they gave him the phone number for USCIS and the address to the local office. I tried calling the number, am unable to speak to someone and cannot make an appointment. Basically I just want to know if we are able to apply still for the social security card now that we are married and if he was incorrectly turned away, or if getting married changed that. Any advice on this issue is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me with a question I have. My fiance just received his visa in Turkey on Monday and he is moving here on Friday. I am wondering what is the best way to bring his money into the US without having to pay fees. I know everytime I fill out a customs form it asks if I am carrying monetary instruments of over $10,000. He would be bringing more than that. I don't know if travelers checks would be the easiest way or what. His bank account is already in US currency. Any quick help is appreciated. Banks in Turkey are closed today and tomorrow is his last day to do it before he moves here. Thanks in advance!

I included the same information you listed, however I also recommend getting a copy of tax transcripts for the last 3 years. They are free, and you can also get them faxed to you if you ask. http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq/0,,id=199557,00.html

Thank you so much! We are going to UPS to mail it right now!
We are hoping someone who has been through the K1 visa process for a Turkish fiance can help us. We had our interview yesterday and everything went well, the man told us we were very thorough and that we were just missing one document, but that it is not a big deal. He said it is easy to get. He gave us a form to mail along with the requested document and Turkish passport, and told us after we mail it via UPS that we would receive the visa within 5 days.
The document we originally sent was the current record of the police certificate, or in Turkey is known as the “Adli Sicil Kaydı”. We need to send the embassy the ARCHIVE RECORD. We went to the public prosecutors office or the “Cumhuriyet Savcılığı” to request this document and they could not understand what archive meant. We even looked it up in Turkish, arşiv, and after going back and forth with them we decided to get the document.
The document Hüseyin originally sent looks like this http://dosyalar.hurriyet.com.tr/sicil_erbakan1.jpg.
However, the new document we requested, below the words “yukarıda kimlik bilgileri bulunan kişinin adli sicil kaydı yoktur” says “yukarıda kimlik bilgileri bulunan kişinin adli sicil arşiv kaydı yoktur”.
We beleive this is exactly what we need based on the description in packet 3 from the Turkey conculate website- Police certificates are required from Turkey. Turkish nationals should contact the closest “Cumhuriyet Savcılığı” (Public Prosecutors Office) to obtain Turkish police certificates. Police Certificates from Turkey are known as “Adli Sicil Kaydı”. IMPORTANT: When requesting the police certificate (adli sicil kaydi), applicants must specifically request that both the current and archived records be shown on the document.
However, Hüseyin thinks that since the man did not even know what the word meant or what we were talking about, that maybe he just added another sentence and wrote the word arşiv in there. We just want to make sure we are sending the correct document because after asking around to other police and government officials, it let us to beleive that we may need something different that does not even match the description on the consulate website.
Can someone who has already been through this process and maybe has a copy of their police report look to see if this is the correct document? We just dont want to delay this process any longer. We would like to overnight thıs to UPS today- the close in 4 hours. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello September K1 Visa Filers! I know I don't post much on here, only recently subscribed to the forum, but I read it every now and then and I am so happy for everyone that is being approved. Even just reading other people's questions, answers and experiences has been so helpful to us. Our interview is Monday so we are hoping for good news, cross your fingers for us
PS- Jenn, good luck with your surgery today, you are in our thoughts and prayers. And good luck to Fuatt for meeting your father

Hi everyone! So we are just trying to prepare the best we can as it gets closer to our interview date on May 3rd, 2010. I have seen multiple reviews/posts recommending that we e-mail the Ankara consulate for permission that the American Citizen be able to attend the interview. Should this e-mail be more along the lines of requesting a dual interview- or just permission to enter the embassy with the foreign fiance? And should I e-mail the same e-mail address that sent me a message regarding packet 3, etc, or is there some other special one I should use? Thanks and any advice is greatly appreciated!

I know that once granted the K1 visa, one cannot leave the country before adjustment of status or will not be able to re enter the US. I am curious, for purposes of planning our honeymoon, how easy it is (and if possible) to travel from state to state after entry? Is it only the continental US? For example lets say we wanted to travel to the virgin islands or Hawaii. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

He is here and sleeping. Of course we didn't go right to sleep. Can't believe he is finally here.
Good night everyone
Congratulations again Jenn! So happy for you both! Just noticed he arrived 2 days ago- bummer Huseyin didn't get to meet him before he left Turkey!

I was just wondering if anyone knows what the estimated time frame is for waiting in AP after the interview in Ankara? I am still waiting to receive packet 4 (which I should be getting any day now) with our interview date. We are making plans for our wedding ceremony and reception to be in August- and assuming everything goes smoothly with our interview, we are estimating our interview will be in April and he will move here in May. It is somewhat difficult to switch around my vacation time at work, and I wanted to be able to take a week or 2 off when Huseyin moves to the US- and I don't want to schedule my vacation, thinking he will move here shortly after the interview and to later find out we are in AP (and then losing my vacation)- I read a review that someone went to the interview, was told they were approved and would receive visa by mail, only to get something in the mail saying they are in AP. For planning purposes, I would just like to know how long I can expect this to take if it does come down to this. Does anybody have any experience with this? Thank you!

They can tell when you are about to get out of AP... if you call, ask them "when should I call back.. what day?" if they say a wek or two... you will be in AP for a while longer.. if they say call back on Friday.. good news you are likely on your way to the consulate soon...
Thanks everyone for your input- I called yesterday and they said they will be sending it to the consulate "this week". Hopefully when I call on Monday it will be a done deal!

I am convinced that the majority of the AP's in Auguhst and Sept. were a muscle flexing to look good on paper for the end of fiscal report... glad to see fewer people having to endure what others went through
I hope so! I just found out today I am in AP at NVC since the 22 of Dec . . .

I just found out today that my case is in AP at NVC as of December 22nd. I am a little unfamiliar with this. I know it means administrative processing. The customer service representative could not give me a timeframe for how long this will take. Does anyone have any ideas? I am a little nervous here, I was getting packet 3 all ready thinking I should receive it any day now, only to find out my case is in AP. I thought I read somewhere (on some other website) that they could be in AP at the NVC for up to 6 months?? I hope that's not true!
K1 and Social Security Card
in Moving to the US and Your New Life In America
Posted · Edited by Elisa&Huseyin
I need some advice! Very frustrated because I went to the social security office with my fiance and insisted on speaking with a supervisor. She said to me that they get K1's all the time, and that once you are married, you are no longer eligible to apply for a social secuirity card and that I needed to apply for a green card. She said if we would have come before we got married, he could have obtained it, but now he has to wait because now he is not my fiance.
I explained to her that it should not matter that we are married, the document "RM 00203.500C.1" states that based on his class of admission into the US, he does not require DHS authorization and is eligible to obtain a social security card. She said they have received clarification from the regional office and they were told once you get married, the K-1 is no longer valid. I explained to her that for his status to remain legal, and for us to apply for EAD and green card we are required to get married right away and told her we already applied for EAD and green card. I told her we will get the EAD in a couple months but it could way longer for the green card. I then asked her what we needed to come back and apply.
She then said once we get the EAD, we can come back. I said so okay what is it that is required? She said proof of identity which is passport, and if you are not a US citizen then proof that you are here legally. I said so okay, thats what the K1 says, he is here legally based on class of admission and it is not expired yet so it makes no sense for you to tell me we can come back and apply with K1 and EAD because this RM document right here states we do NOT need EAD to apply with K1. It would have made sense if she told me that we can come back with the green card because she had just told me the K1 doesnt work now that we are married- but here she is contradicting herself. But also, no where in this RM document does it state that once we are married things change. Obviously if we are married he is no longer my fiance, but he still arrived here legally with k1 class of admission. I said to look and he should be in the SAVE database and she said probably, but this is what our regional office has clarified to us and we cannot issue you a social security card.
What can I do? I want to contact the Chicago regional office- she gave me a name, but there is only a 1-800# and cant speak to anyone. I suposed we could just wait for EAD, but if she is wrong, other people should not be incorrectly turned away and it should be clarified! Anything I can do?
Thanks and sorry for the rant.
