Updated my interview date. It was originally May 15, but had to reschedule due to family issues. Thankfully, it went fairly smoothly. Was put back in line and I was prepared to wait another 2 months or so for an interview date, but received a new date only a week after being put back in line!

Hopefully I get the Interview Notice that tells me the date, time and location today!! .. They already send out the Interview Notice on 04/08/13. *fingers_crossed* .. It was a month of since InLineInt.

I really really appreciate you posting this and taking a HUGE weight off my mind! I pictured us being turned away at gunpoint as soon as our plane landed HAHAHAHAHAHA

A relative did that layover too. I had confirmed it with the consulate of Spain. They said as long as we weren't leaving the terminal, no need. I double checked with the airline and our bags were transferred safely, no need to go to baggage claim, etc, even with that long layover. PS Seriously, stake out the electrical outlets. I only saw one and we got a good amount of dirty looks from people desperately looking for a place to park the night

We did the Madrid 18 hour layover. You don't need a visa because you don't have to leave the terminal. Just find yourself a comfy spot to park yourselves (preferable near an outlet so you can plug in your phones/laptop, etc) and be prepared to listen to the automated airport announcements all.night.long

Never mind, I figured it out!

I'm sorta Class of 08. We actually applied in April 2008. But this is a new screen name, my old one is inactive but I'm sure many of you would remember me
So really? You can change your name during Naturalization? Do you have to pay extra? I know it costs a lot to even change your name in this country (well, according to my knowledge about it from reading "The Namesake"
) -
We just applied last August and were approved in January.
We sent:
- pictures of us from recent trips and of our baby
- our baby's birth certificate
- copies of insurance policies with both our names (health, auto)
- copies of mailings in both our names, including utility bills
- copies of bank statements (that has both our names)
- copies of our retirement accounts and life insurance showing the other as beneficiaries
- 1040's from the past couple of years
We didn't have an interview, were just approved. (same with AOS, no interview). It was pretty painless. But took longer than AOS.

The only time we needed to do a picture for them was the when "Mobile Consulate" came to town and they had set it up with the local CVS or Walgreens to have the correct specifications and background. If Walgreens won't do it try CVS. Costco does passport photos too. This can't be a foreign concept to these places, people need various-sized passport photos all the time for various reasons (students, visas).
I thought you had to come in person, too, to be fingerprinted, which is why they're sending out those "Mobile consulates" (the next one is in Orlando in April).
Also, you should have your husband call them and keep calling until he talks to a live person. Leaving messages has never seemed to help.

FYI, an International Drivers License isn't valid in Illinois. An out of country one is valid for 3 months,(if he has one from Egypt) but the standard "International" one that some states accept isn't accepted here.

I was also going to mention ESL classes, almost all of the Community Colleges offer them and they're often hosted at off campus locations such as libraries, high schools.
Does he go to a local mosque? That might be a good way to meet others. Maybe once he's driving, he can take you to and from work so he has a car during the day,go grocery shopping, etc.

In my experience, it depends on the person. Often times MENA men do things that make people wonder if it's characteristic of them to do, but often, they're no different than other men (American, etc). Some men like to go out nightly, others are homebodies and like to spend time at home. My husband is a MENA man, but he doesn't go out too much. He has tons of friends, and on occasion will hang out with them or his American friends too. I have cousins however, American, married with kids who go out nightly. Would it bother me, yes. But that's me. If you're saying it wouldn't bother you, then don't worry about what other people (your sister, cousin) think.
Something I have learned with MENA men (or any, I shouldn't just say MENA), sometimes habits are hard to break. So if there's a sliver of this being something that bothers you, you might want to say something now. I never liked the excuse "Well he's new here, so I want to make his adjustment easier for him by letting him do ________" when it's something that you don't agree with or like. If/when you have children, you may have expectations that he can say "well it never bothered you before when I went out with my friends".

As a first time mom who did this earlier this year (had in-laws over soon after birth of baby). It was probably the darkest time of my life. My in-laws are great, don't get me wrong. But when you're postpartum and hormonal and as you said, you'll be feeling inexperienced, awkward and like everything you do will be scrutinized - it's just not an ideal situation so soon after the baby. Is there any way to delay them coming until after your maternity leave is done? Then they can spend time with their grandbaby and that's 2 less weeks of childcare you have to worry about.

Girl these people are crazy. Having these "engagement" parties is common for K1 couples in Morocco. Indeed I know of no one who has NOT had one. Casablanca knows this, and they're also aware of how difficult it is to marry in Morocco. I sent these pictures with henna, hugemongous caftan, crown on head, etc. NO PROBLEMS- they had NOTHING to ask about them. They know the deal. Every country is different about this kind of thing. It's a bad idea for people to generalize when giving country specific advice.

True dat. Engagement parties are common. Just label the pictures as such. Heck I even knew of a couple who was questioned by the CO as to why they DIDN'T have an engagement party and the girl had to fly back to Morocco just to have it and produce pics after the interview. (Not saying it's required either, it was probably a fluke in that couple's case). Most people have them tho, because who doesn't like a party with henna and a caftan!

No, you don't have to leave the secure area. There's really nowhere else to go. A lot of travelers were there just waiting overnight for their morning flights. It's the international terminal, so since you're coming from the US you'll just end up meeting in the same terminal.

We did this flight 2 years ago, (Marrakech-Madrid, then on to the US the next day) and both flights were in the same terminal, so no need to even leave the terminal.
I had contacted the Spanish consulate here (in the US) and they told me it was fine, no transit visa needed, esp since both flights were Iberia. If you were transferring from different airlines (i.e Jet Blue to Iberia, etc), then there's a chance the terminal would be different.
So yeah, it was a long #### 18 hours in the terminal, but we found a nice spot near an outlet and watched movies on our laptop.

Did you send it Priority Mail or just first class? I always send Priority and have never had a problem. You can also track the package with the Customs form number when you send Priority.
