Thanks, nycnycnyc, alix, JimmyHou. You are correct - CA apparently has a law that exempts new citizens from the voter registration deadline. I registered to vote after the ceremony, and was told that on election day I can't go to the local polls, but can vote at their central office with the stamped receipt they gave me.

nycnycnyc - I did not apply for a passport just yet, I will wait until after we get back from a vacation.

My 19-year tenure as a UFO (a/k/a "alien") has come to an end There were 903 people sworn in at my ceremony in San Diego. The roll call of countries felt like watching the Olympics Opening Ceremony. The whole process from arriving and getting in line to leaving was about 4 hours (most of it waiting in line). The ceremony itself was concise and moving. Notably, most of the speakers (from the Dep't of State, Social Security, Election Registrar, USCIS) were themselves immigrants.

I kept thinking we are just as deserving, if not more, to call ourselves citizens than some of the people who were born here. We should all be very proud of our achievement!

Congrats to my fellow new citizens and good luck to the rest of you soon-to-be ones!!

For the 4 of us that are scheduled to take the oath on the 10/22 - that's 2 days after the voter registration deadline (today). Does anyone know whether we'll still be able to vote? I saw an online blog from a few years ago that suggested they might make some exceptions for new citizens?

I finally got my oath letter - it will be on October 22 (almost 2 months after I had my interview!).

Congrats to all who recently got their interviews scheduled or were approved!!

I am still awaiting my oath letter (my interview was back on 9/3). They finally updated my online status from "an interview has been scheduled" to "we placed you in oath scheduling que" (ironically, they misspelled the word "queue"!). In SD the ceremony is on the last Wednesday of each month, so I am not very hopeful they'll fit me in the September ceremony next week. More likely the one at the end of October...

Thanks, Chris & Cat! Congrats to you too, as well as to those lucky folks who got a same day oath. Here in San Diego there are many thousands of people per each oath ceremony, so I'm mentally preparing for waiting in a very long line to turn in my green card and then again to pick up my certificate... Almost there!

Just got back from the interview. It went very smoothly. Hardly any wait. Officer very professional and courteous. Great customer service! Asked me for my GC and DL. Then repeated many of the questions from my application. I signed a few pieces of paper, then he administered the test. I must say the last test I had taken was the California Bar Exam 10 years ago. Suffice it to say, the naturalization test did not quite rise to the same level of difficulty. Then congratulations and wait for the oath appointment letter in the mail. Exciting times!

Wow, in line for 2 months - LA is moving at a snail's pace. On their processing times webpage though, it says the LA office is completing all applications within the normal time frame (5 mos). So hopefully you will get your interview notice very shortly! Good luck!

Almost a full month after I was placed in line (the San Diego office must be totally swamped!), when I logged into the USCIS website, I saw this update: "On August 20, 2014, your N400, APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION was scheduled for interview. " Will update the timeline when I get the actual letter.

So I was starting to get worried why I didn't get the "inline" email/text when my 30 days prior to GC anniversary date came and went 5 days ago. Finally today it occurred to me to check my status on the USCIS website - and voila! - apparently I was placed inline back on 7/24. So much for signing up for SMS alerts

I also got the yellow letter a few days ago...

Question for those of you who applied within 90 days prior to your GC anniversary date and who have gotten the inline notice -- did you get the inline notice exactly 30 days prior to your anniversary date?

Hi All - was hoping someone might be able to offer some advice. I missed my fingerprint appointment on June 17th as I was out of the country. I sent the letter back requesting a new appointment time but then managed to get a walk-in on June 20th at my local office (Chicago). I haven't had any updates since then and based on the timelines it looks as though it only usually takes a few days after f'prints to receive the yellow letter.

Anyone else heard of people having a similar experience and how long it took if you do a walk-in after your original appointment and after you have sent the letter back requesting the date change?

I can't offer you any advice on your situation, but I will note that I did my biometrics a week early as a walk-in last Monday, 6/23, and I have not received any sort of notification or correspondence since then.

We did the early day filing, but just barely. His GC anniversary is early July. We completely forgot about the trip when we filed, we should have waited just a little bit longer.

His biometrics appointment is 7/2, so I assume it will still take some time to schedule an interview, attend and pass the interview, schedule an oath, etc...before he actually takes the oath. I'm just hoping we won't be in a situation where we have to try to get his passport in 24 hours.

It's anyone's guess how this will play out. For what it's worth though, when I was researching the timelines for my location, it appeared to me that the interview is generally almost exactly 3 months after the filing date. The oath could be same day or up to 2 months later.

Does anyone have any thoughts on my earlier post, by chance? We have a trip to Canada at the end of Aug. He hasn't even had his biometrics yet, so I'm almost positive he won't have his oath ceremony before the trip. I think we'll be fine, right? Based on other timelines it looks like the process takes about 3 months.

Did he do the early 90-day filing? If so, when was the anniversary date of his green card? I believe they would not allow him to become a citizen prior to that date.

I received the email and text notice that my application was received on June 3. (I'm not going to attempt to update the timeline, seeing that the most recent version of it has messed up formatting.)

Greetings folks! Just dropped my N-400 in the mail today! Filing based on 5-year residency minus 90 days.

Thank you all for the kind words! I just received my card in the mail today - for me too it is exactly 3 months to the day since I mailed my packet!

By the way, it looks a bit different from the card from 2 years ago - looks like they've changed the design and now it's actually green, not pink A nice shot of the Statue of Liberty there too.

Amidst the complete Southern California power outage last night, I got the approval email - card production ordered! YAY!!!

Power was out both in Laguna Niguel, where CSC is, and San Diego, where my local center is, so they must have put on an emergency generator to send me the good news

As an aside - I just marked the 16th anniversary of my arrival in the US! I have lived longer in the US than in my home country! It's crazy that I am still considered an "alien"... So much for the logic of immigration laws.

Yes, I understood why you were...just wondering why on the list I see this and wondering if there is a general reason for it.

I see. I recall there was a lot of forum discussion about this back when we were applying for the original green card, and people were wondering whether it would speed up the application by a couple of days to do an early bio. I think at that time the general consensus was that it does nothing to speed your application up (of course, that is unconfirmed info). So I just did for convenience purposes, but others may do so hoping to speed up their applications.
