Hi! Welcome!
-
Congratulations!
-
Hey everyone!!
My husband is on a student visa and is about to graduate (YAY!!), so unless we start our green card application he will be forced to leave the country Yesterday we went to see an immigration lawyer to talk about the green card AOS process, and she told us it would cost us just under $6000 to file everything through the law firm ($4200) and to pay the immigration fees ($1600).
SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS?!?! We don't have that kind of money!! Is a lawyer absolutely necessary to start the process or can we do it on our own? We've been doing research on what forms to file and what to send in, but we're afraid immigration won't accept the application because we didn't use a lawyer...
I don't want my husband to go back to Europe!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Also, how long does it take to get him a work permit? He's been getting employment offers but he can't accept them because he's not allowed to work... it's frustrating!!!
Thank you so much
Hi,
I'm not a specialist, but I have my personal experience and I just want let you to know that you don't need a lawyer to prepare your paperwork. It can take a while, but if you pay attention to all the steps, you can be successful. I prepared all my forms with a lot of reading and help from this forum (check my timeline out). There are a lot of important information here. You only need to 'understand' all the process. I received my work permit two weeks before my green card interview, that happened 3 months after sending the I-485. They will not deny your application because you don't have a lawyer. From my understanding, what lawyers do is to fill out all the paperwork. You can do it yourself.
Good luck!

I thank everybody that so far have answered this post with so many good advice. My resume has been touched by a professional and has all the essential information like previous experience, education, and skills (I speak spanish, french, and portuguese). I guess is the bad economy to blame for. I have been networking and I'm sure I'll find something soon. I was just wondering if the experiences out there were similar.
For those with bad comments: please, be aware that not everybody is into whatever you are.
Thanks everybody for the nice words.

I received my green card last month and since then I've been looking for a job. So far, I had only one interview. I don't know why, but it looks like my resume with more that 10 years of administrative experience, has not let any headhunter impressed. I've been looking for anything, even in stores like macy's, even if I have a degree in Business. I was wondering about other immigrants experiences looking for their first job in the US. I don't know if it is the economy or if it is really that hard to get started. I spend hours every day posting my resume on the internet or sending them out, answering ads from websites like monster or craigslist. Please, if you have been there, would you give me some hints about how to find my first job in this country. I appreciate any help.

My best wishes for you guys. I remember going to our interview thinking how hard it is to have my life on someone else hands. I kept thinking "i wish the interviewer is in a good mood, had a good night of sleep." I mean, even though we'd provided all kind of documents and proof of a real marriage we still had to go through an interview. We were lucky that our experience was very good, but I've read other people's cases and sometimes is hard to understand how subjective it is. I'm sure soon your journey will be successfully complete!

I've received my green card! It is such a great feeling. I would like to thank all members that have been posting advice and being so hepful. I'm a new member in this website, but I've been reading all the information for months. That helped me a lot. We did not need a lawyer and everything went through. Thanks everybody! Thanks Visa Journey!

I've got my card on the mail today!!!!! I'm soooooo happy!
-
My interview was on 06/04, they ordered my card that same day (online update). Then, on 06/16 I received another email saying my card had been ordered and I'm still waiting. I've been checking on the mail every single day. The interviewer took my work permit away and now I can't even look for a job because I can't prove my permanent resident status. I'm sure it will come this week!!!!

it looks like another case of someone trying to use the "race card".

Have you applied for adjustment of status yet?

I've just adjusted from a tourist visa without problems. I think that the intention is what matters. When I came to the US to visit for the second time, I had no intention in marrying. However, we decided to do so and I don't regret that. At that point, I had ties in my country (job, lease, bank account) but during my interview last week, the uscis officer did not ask anything about that. Our interview was 10 minutes long and she only asked me how we had met, when we had got married, our address, she looked at our bills, bank statements, insurance (that we had sent previously), looked at our albums, took some pictures, and said that I had been approved. Simple as that. Now I'm waiting for the green card. It took us a while to adjust because my husband had some taxes issues, but the whole process was very smooth.
Just make sure you have enough evidence of your relationship.

Sorry for everything you have been through. I think that you'll be happier going back to your family.

We had our interview last Thursday in San Francisco. I took less than 10 minutes. Approved! I wish you guys good luck!
