  1. I'm aware that you can't claim a spouse. She was asking if she could claim her fiance before they got married at the end of the year. I was just trying to state that you can technically claim anyone living with you if they meet those requirements but it won't work in her time frame since her fiance not have lived with her enough in 2013 to be claimed.

To be honest, I wasn't thinking about this and how it would relate to immigration...how her fiancé wouldn't be a fiancé for more than 90 days here etc..

I was just responding as a normal tax question.sorry :-P

  2. Technically you can claim anyone in your household that has lived with you the entire year as long as they made under the $3,400 for the year and you provided more than 50% of their support.

Take a look on the tax sites and it'll give you more info. Here's a quick one that I pulled up. https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/tax-tips/Family/Can-I-Claim-a-Boyfriend-Girlfriend-As-a-Dependent-on-Income-Taxes--/INF14242.html

I'm not sure if in your case that he'll have been living with you long enough by the time you file to claim. I know in the case of children they just have to live with you more than 6 months of the year to claim them. Ask a tax professional or just check out H&R block type websites.

  3. I read an article recently from a Boston immigration advocate firm which stated that you can get masshealth limited which is emergency medicaid to cover hospital visits and combine it with Health Safety Network, which covers regular doctors appointments and lab work.

The emergency medicaid isn't supposed to count against you for immigration purposes and as far as HSN they don't require a SSN , have no time limit on residency requirement and aren't supposed to report to immigration.

I'll try to find the article when I have more time.

  4. Hey all:)

I've spent the past few months reading up on all kinds of K1 things and we've finally stopped procrastinating and got everything together to send the package in.

He's been sick for the past month or so, and we just got the results back this morning. He was just diagnosed with Leukemia :crying: I'm going to be flying over there to go through all the treatments with him for as long as I can...which will be hard considering I have 2 small children. I'm hoping to get him over here for treatment ASAP but that raises issues about medical insurance:/ Anyways I guess I'm rambling:S

My question is.. he seems to think that even if he is in remission that this will be enough to keep the US from allowing him residency. I tried to research this and didnt see anything regarding cancer. I was just wondering if anyone has any idea if they would really deny his medical for cancer. From what I read, it just seemed to be communicable diseases. Any info anyone has would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Kerri
