wow i'm surprised your application didn't get rejected because you didn't send in your tax return forms... I've also had my GC since 2004 and I was out of the US for 8 months last year. So I send in all of my tax return forms for the past 5 years, along with all of my pay stubs with my application. So definitely bring those with you at the interview!! Bank statements like I said, and proof that you retained your apartment (bills...). The reason behind me being away for so long was partly because of school, so i'm going to bring a letter from my university at the interview. I just received my NOA, so no interview date yet, I'm hoping for it to be in July/August!

Can you tell me more info, because your situation sounds like mine. I have my US green card but would like to return to Canada to finish university. My US husband is also going to school there (so we really aren't maintaining a US address). Did you get an application for travel document before you left the US for school? I am panicking because I don't want to loose my permanent resident status that I worked so hard for, yet we also want to finish our education.
I am worried I will have problems getting back in to the US after I complete University.....
(I am not so worried at this point about getting citizenship, I can wait patiently for that. I am more worried about impacting my perm resident status altogether)

No I didn't get any travel documents or re-entry permit while I was abroad for 8 months. How long will you be in Canada for? Getting back in should not be a problem if it's under 1 year. You can always go there for a few months for school, then come back to the US during the summer.... that way, you're not breaking your residence and you have somewhat of a US address. I live at home, so my permanent address while I was in France still remained here in the US. File your US tax forms as well, even if you end up not working at all in the US. I'm more worried about getting citizenship haha

I am in the same situation as you and we should both be fine as long as we can prove that we did not abandon our residence. When you filed for N400, did you send in your tax return forms for the last 3/5 years? Along with pay stubs? If not, bring those to the interview! (it's proof that you did not abandon). Bring along bank statements as well and any other documents you think might help.
How long exactly have you had your Green Card for?
My local office is also in Chicago! So I would love to know how your interview goes when you're done!

hi, i had my green card since 2004. How long were u outside US? I didnt include my tax return forms in the application that i sent uscis. Im planning to bring it on my interview. what else do u think i should bring to prove that i didnt break continous residence? goo dluck to us! i'll keep you posted. when is your interview? mine is on MAY.

The US allows you to have dual citizenship, so it all depends on the other country you're already a citizen of. For ex, I know France allows you to have dual citizenship, but I know some countries will not allow it and make you choose between their own citizenship or the American one.

This may be a silly question, but are the 2 passport photos that you have to submit with the N400 used for your actual American passport later on? Or are they simply kept by the immigration office/government?

Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding my time spent outside the US. I'll be eligible to file the N400 at the end of this month, it's now been 5 years since I've received my green card (june 2004). However, last year, I studied abroad to France with my university program, and the trip lasted 8 months total! I really really want to apply for citizenship now, but i'm worried that my application might get rejected because I was out of the US for longer than 6 months. The guide states that I can still be eligible if I can provide enough documents proving that I did not abandon my residency such as tax transcript for the last 5 years and pay stubs.... Are tax return forms allright as well?
Also, do you think those documents would be enough to prove that I did not abandon my residency while abroad? Should I send in more proof? Like a letter stating why I was out of the US for so long? Or should I keep that for the day of the interview?

i'm not yet in your stage but i happened to read about that in the "welcome" document...says there that if your 5-yr stay is not continuous (broken because of your 6-month stay abroad) that you should have at least been in the US for 30 months total within the last 5 yrs prior to application...so add all the days/months you were in the US and subtract all the days/months you were out. good luck!
