    hey everyone,

    I owe the state some taxes and called the IRS according to the interview checklist ( it says that if you owe any taxes bring a documentation of the current status of a repayment program ) so, the IRS told me that they dont have or give any document like that. they also said I can make payments little by little...

    and on the tax forms there is a web site name called www.officialpayments.com/state if i make payments from there and print the confirmation page would that be fine with IO...?

    and did you guys have any problem because of the taxes...?

    have you guys been asked to show the tax forms especially in Atlanta GA...?

    other than that Atlanta does the oath on the same day...if everything goes smooth i will hopefully be a citizens on july 1st...

    I don't know about Georgia, but in Massachusetts you can get a "certificate of good standing", both online or mailed to your address on file. It's free. Check whether your state offers the same type of certification. Your state's department of revenue probably provides such certificates routinely for college loan applications and the like. Even if the certificate does not show you in "good standing", at least you'll have an offical record of the status quo. And if you can somehow prove that you paid up and corrected the problem, or you have a payment plan and evidence that you stick to it, I expect that you should be OK. The key is to go to your state DOR, not the IRS.

    The IRS provides tax transcripts and tax records for your federal taxes only. Call 1-800-829-1040 and follow the menus to order the transcripts and records. More info here: http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=110571,00.html. If you have the federal transcripts, at least you can show that your tax problem is limited to the state taxes. Also, if you paid local taxes (property, excise, etc.), it may be helpful to show that you always paid in full, again, to show that the problem is limited to the state tax.

    I suppose that owing taxes for a viable reason and being in the process of paying them in full is much better than having failed to file a return, ever. Also, presumably you checked off the "no" box for question 5 and attached an explanation, so hopefully the IO is prepared to accept whatever evidence you can provide.

    All done. Had the oath today, then went to the Social Security office to update my record, registered to vote at City Hall, and applied for a passport.

    At the oath ceremony, there were 101 people from 40 countries. The invitation said that it would start at 12:30pm and take two hours. They started signing people in at noon, but the actual ceremony didn't start until 1:20pm or so. But by 1:50pm we were all done.

    Visitors at Oath Ceremony - Boston

    I'd like to take my daughters (15 / 12 / 6) with me to the oath ceremony but I'm not sure whether that's such a smart idea. Because my wife cannot go, if visitors get separated and they don't allow children to be without adult supervision, I end up with a problem.

    Does anyone have experience with oath ceremonies at the John Joseph Moakley court house in Boston? Only interested in that one location, not Faneuil Hall, Fenway Park or the Haynes Convention Center. Every venue appears to have different rules. At the Moakley court house, no phones, cameras or other electronic devices are allowed (at the other locations they are OK) and everyone must have photo ID (no problem there, the kids all have a couple passports, but no such restriction at other locations).

    So the question is: Can I bring children as visitors to the oath ceremony at the John Joseph Moakley court house?

    I chose not to bring it with me because I didn't want the hassle if they wouldn't let me, and since I took the train I would have had no practical way to leave it anywhere. Luckily, there are still some good old-fashioned pay phones at the train station.

    I saw others in the waiting room using phones, so I suppose at the JFK building they don't care. The oath letter, however, says in no uncertain terms that noone can bring any electronic devices, cell phones or pagers. Go figure.

    Interview done. Smooth sailing.

    My appointment was for 9:30. I arrived at 9:00 and checked in. A few minutes later, someone called me to ask the civics questions and administer the English test. He had a printed-out list of ten questons, but stopped after I got the six answer correct. The questions were:

    - The House of Representatives has how many members?

    - We elect a US Representative for how many years?

    - In what month do we vote for President?

    - Who is the Chief Justice of the United States now?

    - Name one war fought in the 1900's.

    - ... I forget what the sixth question was.

    Then I had to read "Who lives in the White House" and write "The president lives in the White House". The whole thing took no more than a minute.

    I was sent to another waiting area, where I sat until I was called at 9:55. I estimate that there were maybe 75 people waiting, but not all of them applicants (plenty of attorneys, surprisingly - how hard is this process, please, that you need a lawyer to babysit you?). The interview took about 20 minutes. After putting me under oath, the IO went over all the items in the N-400 form. He asked me about some of the memberships because he didn't know what they were (one religious fraternity and a couple professional societies), which makes sense for him to do, not a problem. All in all, a friendly, professional atmosphere. No idle chit-chat, but still very pleasant.

    Documents: He asked for my green card, my state driver's license, my social security card (if you have it with you) and my passport. Nothing else, but your mileage my vary. I brought a stack of other papers, but I was just as happy to take them all back home unused.

    After I was done with the IO, I was back in the waiting room and had to wait for his supervisor to check through the file (so I guess half the people you see when you get there are done with their interviews already). At about 10:55, I was called to sign my pictures and received to the notice for the oath ceremony. That's it.

    My recommendation: Expect that this takes some time, respect the IO's professionality by treating him (or her) with respect, don't get frustrated if he asks the same question a couple times.

    Does anyone know whether they allow people to bring cell phones into the JFK Federal Building in Boston? It said "no cell phones" on the fingerprint notice, but not on the interview letter.

    I'll just keep my cell phone in my car. Good Luck Guys!!!!

    Thanks, but wasn't the question. I'm planning to take the train to avoid rush hour traffic and would like to have the phone with me so I can call someone to pick me up from the train home, not knowing beforehand which train I'll be on. So the question is whether they allow people to bring cell phones into the JFK Federal Building in Boston, otherwise I'll have to leave it at home.

    Oh, and in case anyone is interested in my calculation for predicting the dates based on 27 posts across 18 DO's this year:

    Sent date + 11 days = NOA received

    Sent date + 18 days = Fingerprint notice received

    Sent date + 29 days = Fingerprint appointment

    Sent date + 42 days = Interview letter received

    Sent date + 90 days = Interview date

    My own experience is within +/- one day of these dates. My NOA and FP notice were "late" because they arrived on Mondays.

    I went for the fingerprints five days early because I was in Boston anyway that Saturday (got a free parking space right outside the office, too, there was even time left on the meter). No lines, no waiting, it was great! Kudos to all the people working there, nice, friendly, quick, and professional. Within ten or fifteen minutes I was done. Saved me from having to take a whole morning off during the week to get in and out of the city. However, getting the fingerprints done early does not seem to have any impact at all on speeding up the interview letter and date.

    Interview letter arrived today (3/24/09). Just for fun, I had tried to predict the letter and interview dates based on dates posted here and take some satisfaction in the fact that I calculated the interview dead-on for May 11th and the letter date off by one. B)

    Time to hit the books now. :jest: How many states? On what day do we celebrate the 4th of July? Why did we throw tea into Boston harbor? (oops, that's not one of the questions).

    First question he asked me (which surprised me), was, if I had my German "Beibehaltungsgenehmigung" (it's a permission to acquire another citizenship without losing the German citizenship) and if it was still valid.

    First of all, congratulations on the interview! I filed my N400 last month (after receiving the BBG) and am waiting for the IL right now.

    Do you know what prompted the question about the Beibehaltungsgenehmigung? What was his reaction? I thought they normally would not ask, and we don't volunteer that we have it. Were there any follow-up questions regarding reasons for the BBG or how serious you are about the citizenship oath's requirement to renounce allegiance to other countries?
