  1. My wife is 23 and I am 22. My wife already graduated college and I am currently a student and we are living with my parents and don't pay rent or have a lease. We got approved in 5 minutes at the Newark, NJ office.

    We brought:

    joint credit card

    joint bank account

    2008 joint tax return

    proof we are each others life insurance beneficiaries

    proof she is on my horizon health insurance

    joint cell phone bill

    wedding pictures

    wedding books (little books we left on the wedding tables for people to write any advice or to wish us luck)

    receipts for engagement ring, wedding rings

    The officer didn't want any pictures. He asked my wife what her birthday was, asked me how long i lived at my current address and then just asked for any joint bills or proof of marriage. All we had to give him were the items in bold. Like i said, we were approved in 5 minutes and are awaiting the green card in the mail. Good luck!! Don't stress because I did and it was over nothing! lol

  2. Lakontis,

    My wife is from Canada. We filed the initial paperwork in November of 2007. After a ton of more paperwork and money, she was able to enter the U.S. in early October, and we got married November 8, 2008. So ours was basically a year exactly. But since november, we had to go through the process of adjusting her status, ead, things like that. And we just had our interview last month and were approved.

    This is just to give u an idea. and we had no police record or anything like that, we are squeaky clean, lol.

  3. Hey guys, on April 30th my wife and I went to the AOS interview. Took 5 minutes, approved. She got her "Welcome to the United States" letter in the mail. We are just waiting for her Green Card to arrive. When the officer approved us, he said she should get it in 10 days. It's been 20 days and still no green card. Is it normal to take long?

    Also, we want to drive up to Canada to see her family in July. The officer didn't stamp her passport so is she still not able to travel? What if we don't get the green card in time? How would we visit her family? All we need is the GC!! lol

    Thanks in advance.

    I had my interview the same day as urs. recieved my welcome notice on 4th and after that nothing. Then on 12th i called uscis cuz my status on their website never changed, it was still saying that my case is pending so i called to find out why it never changed so they were like yeh its still pending so i told him that i already have my welcom letter. he asked me what it says on welcome letter so i told him whatever it said. So the very next day i recieved a CPO email, first ever email from CRIS. and on 18th i recieved an email saying "approval notice sent"so i m hopin my green card is in that approval letter. So u might wanna call them too.

    Would we be able to schedule and INFOPASS and get it stamped so she can travel?

    It shouldnt take long to make up a little green card, lol

  5. well my wife and I showed up 25 min before out interview time and we were called in at 1:30 on the dot. When we arrived, the lady behind the window was so nasty just snatching the paperwork out of my wife's hand. We stayed calm and let her act like jerk she was.

    We were called in and it lasted maybe 5 minutes. We were sworn in, asked my wifes name, date of marriage, if she had a job, where we lived and all documents with both our names on it. We showed all the paperwork, he kept it all and then told us our case was being approved and we would get the Green Card within the next 10 days.

    He asked her if she we get a job in the next 2 weeks, we told him no, he took her EAD because it will be invalid once we get the green card anyway.

    He didn't stamp her passport or anything but he def told us we were approved!!

    we were so stressed over nothing. Thank you so much for everyone who responded and a special thanks to this website for the guidance. You made the process very simple. There were tons of couples there probably shelling out lots of money for lawyers, and yet we did this all ourselves.

    Thanks again!!

  6. Hey all! My wife and I started this whole process back in November of 2007. Our AOS interview is finally here!! we have the interview in Newark, NJ this Thursday the 30th.

    My wife and I are only 22 and 23 years old and currently live with my parents while we look for apartments. I just wanted to know if things like cell phone bills, bank statement, life insurance, health insurance, joint credit cards, and lots of emails dating back to 2005 are enough? It's just that because we live with my parents, we don't have any utility bills or rent receipts to show the officer.

    We have a HUGE binder nicely organized, every single piece of paperwork filed and received from the government, tons of photographs from our wedding, plane ticket receipts of all the visits I took up to Canada to see her, engagement ring receipt, lots and lots of other info.

    Do you all think we'll be okay? I've heard that Newark officers are easy going. I just keep trying to stay calm knowing that our love is true so we have nothing to worry about but everything about this process is so nerve racking worrying whether or not we'll be approved, lol.

    Thanks so much in advance!

  7. My wife and I have been going through the K1 process, she got her EAD last week and her Social Security Card today and have her AOS interview April 30th. She wants to get a driver's license.

    She is 23 yrs old (24 in october) so is there a way to just tranfer the license over?

    i read somewhere about "obtaining a permit for a non citizen?"

    She has been driving since she was 16 in Canada and has a full Ontario license!! PLEASE tell me she does not have to get a permit?? She needs to be able to drive by herself to and from work. Please help!!

  8. same thing did happen with me. After 90 days, I took a info pass and they emailed to MO service center. Then I received it within 2 weeks. You better to go with Info Pass.

    we had our infopass, got her EAD 3 days later, and just applied and approved for SSN. She will receive it within two weeks. In time to do my taxes the easy way, get her on my bank account, and ready for her AOS interview april 30th!

  9. I am at 130 days and still no EAD. I feel your pain! And, well like others have told me here: you have an interview date, so everything is definitely moving forward so that's good! So, even if you get the EAD, evidently they take it away at the interview... I found that out only a few days ago. Just be patient.

    well she got her EAD on Friday!!! What did you mean that evidentlyt hey take it away at the interview?

    well we had our InfoPass yesterday. in and out in a half hour which was nice. But we found out, my wife was actually granted her EAD on march 5th!!!! Yet, it went back to the service center because USPS marked it UNDELIVERABLE. We checked the address, 100% correct. We live with my parents but the fact of the matter is that she's always received the government letters at our address so that shouldnt even be an issue. They are sending it out again and we should receive it in less than two weeks.

    We called the post office and tore them a new you know what. thanks for the help guys, we've gone through this whole process for a year and a half and I guess if this is our only glitch, it could be worse!

    thanks we just did that yesterday plus the post office is going to make note of it as well. u think it will take two full weeks to get it? i mean i'm in NJ and its only coming from Vermont, lol.

  12. What documents are acceptable as proof of identity and foreign status?

    IRS has streamlined the number of documents the agency will accept as proof of identity to obtain an ITIN. There are now 13 acceptable documents.

    An original, or a certified or notarized copy, of an UNEXPIRED passport is the only document that is accepted for both identity and foreign status. If you do not have a passport, you must provide a combination of current documents that contain expiration dates - we accept documents issued within 12 months of the application if no expiration date is normally available. The documents must also show your name and photograph, and support your claim of foreign status.

    IRS will accept certified or notarized copies of a combination (two or more) of the following documents, in lieu of a passport:

    * National identification card (must show photo, name, current address, date of birth, and expiration date)

    * U.S. driver's license

    * Civil birth certificate (required for dependents under 18 years old)

    * Foreign driver's license

    * U.S. state identification card

    * Foreign voter's registration card

    * U.S. military identification card

    * Foreign military identification card

    * Visa

    * U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) photo identification

    * Medical records (dependents - under 14 years old only)

    * School records (dependents and/or students - under 18 years old - only)

    so which form should we file? 1040 ez jointly? we dont have a house or anything.

    BR - You may want to wait to file your taxes. Go through some of the tax threads on here and you will understand why. I am assuming you married in 2008, as such your wife is entitled to the stimulus rebate most people received last year. However, when congress passed the stimulus bill (last year's), they excluded anyone without a SSN. Those filing with an ITIN will not receive it. So to make sure your wife gets her $600 worth of stimulus:

    A) File now as MFJ with the ITIN then once her GC arrives, get a SSN, then submit an amended return (1040X) to claim the "recovery rebate" of $600.

    B) File for an extension on your taxes (you will receive a six month extension by asking) and file them once you have her SSN.
