Nov. 2010 We filed a 130 petition to bring my permanent resident Chinese wife's 26 year old unmarried son to the US. Our check was cashed and a receipt letter was received.
Have not heard anything since. When I check online
Processing Times
USCIS National Goal - 5.0 Month(s)
USCIS National Average - 8.7 Month(s)
California Service Center - 16.0 Month(s)
Does this mean that "something" will happen in 16 months next March. What is the time and about how long can it take to get him here?
Chinese expect their child to marry at 27 years old and my wife is getting concerned.
Is there any way to speed things up? She can get citizenship in a little over a year if that will help.
I tried to change my email address and it would not let me. My only working email address is xxxxxxxxxxx
This site and the people who help are great.

My wife entered April 30, 2010 in Seattle. After several calls the SS card and green card came the end of July.

My wife has been in the US for 6 months with a CR1 visa. We want her unmarried 24 year son to also become a permanent resident. I see we need to file a just a I-130, birth certificate copy and the fee. I read "when a visa becomes available" and we are wondering about how long that would be. When do we file more forms and documents. Paul and Lili

I-864 Assets. I am not able to finding a trusting co-sponsor. My SS benefits are about 12k per year and the poverty level requirement is 17,500 My Chinese wife has considerable Chinese stock assets but are it is now managed by her brother who has much experience in stocks. I have some assets but I have my sister handling these. When we get to the US will move things into our joint accounts, but can not now because my wife does not have an SS. We tried to set up a joint account in China, but banks seem unfamiliar with this idea and we really want to move forward and close Chinese banking accounts . We can meet the asset requirements in an easy to see and verify way by moving some money around. Does anyone know about time requirements? Do I need to show we have had these assets in place for a long time. Do we need to keep assets in a holding place for years or can we use them for living expenses when we get to the US. WE have easy and quick access to the assets now but were hoping to make better arrangements once we get to the US. I find Chinese banks very frustrating. We are doing a DCF so I believe my wife will take the I-864 and support documents to her interview.
Just checked the I-864P and the 125% poverty level went up in Feb to 18,212 from 17,500.

pgb47 - The I-864 is a 10 year agreement/contract with the US Government, it doesn't last forever. Also, it doesn't cost the co-sponsor anything, unless the immigrant ends up a burden on the State and the US Govt comes to the sponsors for reimbursement of any claims or benefits paid to the immigrant.
It IS a huge commitment, but no greater than that of marriage in the first place
My In-Laws are sponsoring me because I married their son and they believe in our marriage.
Yes, marriage is a big commitment and I have no problems with the I-864 BUT my hopeful co-sponsor has never met my wife and is a very cautious person. I just want to give her all the facts.
The I-864a says
15.
(Print Name)
a. Promise to provide any and all financial support necessary to assist the sponsor in maintaining the sponsored immigrant(s) at or above the minimum income provided for in section 213A(a)(1)(A) of the Act (not less than 125 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines during the period in which the affidavit of support is enforceable;
What kind of contract is this? Can this really be legally binding? Who determines the details when there is an issue. Ask someone to sign a contract with no details. I can not ask anyone to sign such a thing. I will just have to find a different way

I have been working in China for five years and now my wife and I want to move to the US. I get Social Security but not enough to meet the 125% requirement. We have some saving but not enough.
I have been looking at the information I find about co-sponsors and I do not like what I find. It is vague and has NO time limit. I can find no limits as to how much this could cost my co-sponsor. There is no way to end or modify the "contract". If some one were to ask me to be a co-sponsor, I would not even consider it.
I do not feel I can in good conscience ask a relative to make such a commitment. So we will try to save money and maybe in about 5 years we will be ready to make the move.
I could go to the US without my wife and find a job, since a job in China will not help. But at 62 years old and 10% unemployment in the US, we should probably just adjust to staying in China.

Thanks for the info. There is no chance he will stay single for another 7 years. In China you get married at 27-28 years old. If you are still single at 30 you are an outcast. I fear that when he marries and has a child my wife will want to move back to China. Maybe she will become a citizen and then we can live/visit in China for a few years. No good solution
