Hi, I've searched high and lo and can't find much feedback on this particular topic.

Perhaps i'm looking in the wrong thread. If so, could someone please direct me to the right place.

As for our situation, it's pretty straightforward.

My husband is a citizen. I got my Green Card last year in the summer.

Shortly after we left for Japan to teach English.

We knew our contracts in Japan would be short term, at the most 2 years.

So...we applied for a re-entry permit and we got it. However, the document came so quickly!

So in actual fact our Re-entry permit expires 25 days BEFORE our Japanese work contracts do

Anyhow, we could technically cancel our contracts early, but it would look really bad and we would lose our free ticket home and

about $3000 USD (one months pay here). I know that applying for the SB-1 will cost us, but we think it would be worth it.

Our school's really want us to complete our contracts!

If anyone has applied for this visa, or filled out the DS-117, please let us know what happened.

How much did it cost overall? What is the time frame? Were you rejected? What was the airport re-entry like?

How did your interview go?

We would truly appreciate it!

You don't have to apply for AOS. That is if you don't have a green card yet and came here on a visa or adjust status through visitor's status.

Have you already gone to the office to apply for SSN? Because if you just ticked the box on your application that you want an SSN, you'll be waiting a long, long time Most people check that box, I did and I never got my SSN automatically. You still need to actually go to the SSN office and apply in person!

I took my passport down to the SSN office today right after reading your posts, and was processed pretty quickly.

She told me that they hadn't assigned me a number yet, so it was good that I came in.

I should have it in about a week!

Hi,

I landed in the US as an IR1 May 1.

I have not yet received my SSN card in the mail, and some people on the forum suggested I go to the SSN office myself and get it done.

Is there any danger of them giving me two numbers by accident, or can they look me up in their system and see if I have already been issued a number?

Also, I keep hearing of people applying for an AOS which I believe is an adjustment of status. Do I need to do this?

I have been married for over 2 years, so I don't think my Green Card is a conditional one. I believe it will be good for 10 years.

Do I have any other paperwork responsibilities (other than paying my taxes every year) that I should be aware of??

I can't seem to find any documentation stating that it needs to be reason that are 'out of my control'.

Could someone help me out with this or at least tell me which is the correct forum to check this in, cause I can't seem to find anything similar to my situation.

I just immigrated to the USA from Canada. My Greencard will be arriving in the mail shortly (yeah!).

Both my husband and I were hired overseas for English teaching jobs. The contract will be for less than 2 years.

We leave in July.

Here are my issues:

1. If I apply now, will I be able to take my biometrics on time...before I leave?

2. Do I even need to do my biometrics over again, as I did them once at the US Embassy of Montreal for immigration purposes.

3. Has anyone done something similar, I would really love to hear a first hand account of your experience.

Does anyone know what freedom either Americans or Canadians have about attaining the notes made on individual passports? Last time we crossed the border the Canadian official stated she was going to make some 'remarks' on my husbands American passport, but she wouldn't let us know what they were, so we feel left in the dark about the whole thing. Just curious to know what rights and freedoms we have when it comes to passport information.

My birth certificate is also from Quebec and is also in English. I just noticed that on the reverse it has a short paragraph in French about the security features. I used this birth certificate for my K-1 with no problems and I did not have a translation of the reverse. I think the information they are concerned with it the actual birth identification information on the front so as long as that is in English I wouldn't worry about translating the French paragraph on the back. I had absolutely no problems - and no translation.

(I also notice that on the front of mine it says "To ensure that this document is authentic, please check the security features on the back. An English version is provided on our Web site: www.statcivil.gouv.gc.ca ." So, if you wanted to get a translation you could just print off that page and include it with the Birth Certificate .)

His birth certificate was in French. I think the way you can tell if it needs to be translated or not depends on what language it was registered in. His was registered in French, so the birth certificate he has was in French. If you need to find a place to have it translated, let me know and I will see if my husband still has the place he went to. He made an appointment with them and brought the translated certificate home with him and mailed it off that day. It cost him like 70$. I don't think there was English on his. I would have to look, but for the thing that says who his parents are and such... that was all in French... does that answer your question?

My Birth Cert is in English, it's just this portion on the back (a description of the security measures on the document, like the ink quality and emblem). It was registered in English as well.

That's exactly what I was thinking, but I'm currently of this mindset to try and cover every single possible base.

It would be great if there was any other applicants who were born in Quebec who may have input into the translation part of it.

I have my IR1 interview next week.

I have a Birth Certificate from Quebec.

I sent the NVC a recent copy of my BC.

The front is in English (with all of my information and parents info).

However, I read Shiri's account of her interview then looked at my BC again, only to find that the BACK of it contains a paragraph in French that describes the security features of the document.

Does this need to be translated? It has nothing to do with me, only with the printing quality of my BC.

Also, I have another separate version of my BC, an older one that has no french on either side, but it looks slightly different than what I sent in to the NVC. I sent them the newer, snazzier version.

Can I bring the old one in, in lieu of a translation, or do they want an original that is identical to what I sent the NVC?

1. My police check original was sent to the NVC. I have copies of it. Is this going to be enough? I only had 1 original.

Anyone ever go with copies?

2. I have an original long form Birth Certificate from Quebec, but not a Record of an Act. I was under the impression that you could submit either, and on my interview letter, it doesn't say anything about attaining a Record of an Act.

Anyone ever go with just a Birth Cert original? It doesn't need translating either, it's in English.

3. If my interview is for 9am, what time do people suggest I show up? 6:30am seems a bit too early....thoughts?

4. What does the visa that they put in your passport look like? Is it a stamp or sticker? Does it take up a whole page? I'm running out of space in my passport but it's good until 2012. Wondering if I should get a new one before I leave for the US or while i'm in the US. Is the visa still active if you get a new passport before immigrating?

Hi,

You haven't filled out your timeline or told us which visa you have applied for, but I will assume IR1/CR1.

You don't need a copy of the police cert - they will already have it.

The doors open at Montreal at 7:30.

The visa covers 1 page. If I were you I would just keep the passport you have an not hassle with a new one. I suppose (but I don't know) that the visa would still be valid if you get a new passport before you leave - but I don't know why you would unless you do not have 1 page available.

i think it would help us answer your question if you let us know what visa you came on.

If you are going to your green card interview, why do you need a page for a visa? You won't be getting another visa put in your passport at the interview.

I don't think it's necessary to have your old passport, though.

Good luck getting a new one before the 20th though. Since I'm sure the office is closed Monday, you only have about 3 or 4 days for them to process it before your interview.

I'm a Canadian, doing the IR1 application. My interview is in Montreal on April 20.

I was under the impression that they stick an entry visa into your passport at the US Embassy, then you immigrate into the US with that entry visa (perhaps it's in the form of a stamp or sticker).

You can do a 24 hour rush process for a new passport. It costs $70 on top of the regular fee. Just wondering if I show up with a new passport other than the one that is photocopied and documented on the DS230 form if it will be an issue.

My Green Card interview is scheduled for April 20. I have enough pages in my passport for my Visa, but I just realized that I may not have enough pages in my Passport for a trip I will be taking afterwards.

Here is my question:

If I get a new passport done before my interview, will this be an issue? I've sent in photocopies of my current passport and I guess that it might screw everything up if I show up with a brand new passport. Or does it?

Has anyone ever submitted all their paperwork to the NVC, then applied for a new passport before the interview?

Is it computer generated? I was told it has to be computer generated not handwritten.

Mine is computer generated, but that's because I have recent ones that I recenly requested from the Government. I'm not sure how it works with original handwritten ones. Hopefully someone else does.

Yes, one of the members here (Shiri). Her Husband got to the interview they did not have the translation of the birth certificate and a few other things. NVC had told them they would not need the translation. Anyway, they were sent away without the visa and asked to have the BC translated. So just be sure to get the translation.

The birth certificate is in English, so there is no problem there.

I just want to make sure I can do this with just a Birth Cert. because my meeting is in less than 2 weeks.
