  1. So I have my oath ceremony tomorrow. Today in the mail I get a voter registration form from the department of transitional services.

It says I applied or receive public assistance and because of state law they have to help me register to vote if I want to.

Here's the thing though I never applied for public assistance since I know you can't until you achieve citizenship and I am not a citizen until hopefully tomorrow after my oath.

I did apply for SSI for my daughter back at the end of May. She is 2 and is a US citizen. I just found out her application has been approved and so she has been receiving SSI payment from June 1 onwards. This is the only reason why I can think of that the department of transitional services would have my name, however the SSI is in my daughter's name and I only did the application because she is a minor. I assumed since she is a US citizen and disabled then my citizenship at the time shouldn't matter. My daughter and husband are also on state medicare and have been for the past year. This is the only state assistance we currently receive since even though our income is low enough to qualify for $250 in food stamps since I am not counted as a person we don't qualify.

I am just hoping that this letter won't affect my citizenship application. I never claimed to be a US citizen and never applied for public assistance for myself.

  2. I sent my n-400 application March 30. The other day I received a letter to do biometrics May 7.

I thought if you had fingerprints done recently they didn't have to be redone. I had biometrics done last year in March and then again in August (it took them 5 months to tell me that the first set were no good).

Why are they making me redo my fingerprints when it hasn't even been 8 months yet?

I was really hoping to avoid the biometrics because of the 5 month delay that happened last year when I filed for remove conditions.

  3. I am about to send off my application for citizenship. I heard if you had biometrics recently you don't have to do it again. I did biometrics twice last year - March when I originally sent my application to remove conditions and then again in August because it took uscis 5 months to let me know the fingerprints didn't work and had to be redone.

Am I correct that since my last fingerprints were done 7 months ago I don't have to redo them. Also if I don't does this mean that I can save myself the biometrics fee.

Also I was wondering what the general timeline was from submitting application until when you are granted citizenship. I live in MA and my application is usually sent to the box in Vermont. Also when are you considered a US citizenship - after passing the interview and tests, or do you have to wait until after the oath cermonary? I need to know this in order to apply for government programs.

  4. Just wanted to update what happened.

I went to the social security office today and they updated my card. I then went to the bank. The customer service lady phoned the credit card person and was told that it was because of the "work only" words on the ssn. I told her I went to the office today and got it taken off so when I get my new ssn card in a week or two I need to go back to the bank and they will fax the card over to the credit card people. Man, this has been a real big mess - going to take me 2 months to get this credit card, but at least it is going to be fixed. I don't know why this bank has such a hassle with that line on the ssn card, I never had trouble getting a card at my other bank where me and dh have a joint account. Luckily I have a green card now, and not on a TN anymore or else I would be up ship's creek.

  5. I have a green card through marriage, before that was here on a TN. I have lived in the US for 3 years and have 2 personal credit cards.

I have decided to start my own business. I went to the bank and set up a business account, deposited 10 thousand into the account and applied for a business credit card through them. Two weeks late I get a reject letter saying that they couldn't verify references. I phoned them to see what it was about and was told to fax a copy of my ssn to them which I did. Another week goes by and I get another rejection letter with the same thing. So I phone again and am told I can't get a credit card because my ssn says "for work purposes only" and that they only give credit cards to US citizens. I am livid! Is this normal. When I told them that my other bank which I share with my husband issued me a personal credit card no problem, they couldn't answer and just said this was there policy. Has anyone heard about this? At this point I feel like I should just take my business elsewhere, but I just paid for them to order me checks and don't want to lose even more money closing my accounts. Is there anything I can do about this? I am planning on going to see the bank manager tomorrow who I openned the account with last month.

And for those that are wondering what bank it was - it is Citizen's Bank. I have had a personal account with them since the day I step first in the US over 3 years ago.

  6. I have our interview in a couple of weeks and worrid about one thing. I'm Canadian and here on a TN visa. I got my first visa June 2006 and met my husband October 2006. In May 2007 we moved in together and I renewed my visa at the border. A few months later I changed jobs and went back to the border for another TN. That job lasted 6 months, I was laid off last March and applied for another TN this past April. For the 3 past TNs I got at the border my husband (then boyfriend) was with me, when the NAFTA officier asked what his relationship was with me I told him he was my boyfriend. He had no problem with this information and I got my TN each time no problem.

We got married this past September, but have been engaged for a year before that so when I went for my last TN last April we were engaged. My question is what should I tell them at my interview if they ask when we got engaged? If I say we got engaged September 2007 and they see the last time I applied for a TN was April 2008 that would show I had immigration intent and I'm worried they will deny my AOS. Would it be better to say instead that we got engaged after April for our wedding in September - would they believe that?

  7. After driving 40 minutes in freezing rain where I couldn't see outside my windows I got to the office today and was told no we won't take you until noon on Friday. So to all those that think you can go early, you can't. I arrived at the office at 10:30 and was told to come back in an hour because my letter had 12:00 as the timeslot. I then asked if it was okay to do it today 2 days before the scheduled date. Then the guy said "Oh I didn't even notice the date, no, you have to do it on the date scheduled, come back on Friday at 11:30". They said that they could reschedule it for a Wednesday but it will be a while before I could get in. I told them that I didn't receive my first letter until 1 week after the scheduled time because the post office took 4 weeks to give me the letter. I was originally scheduled for December 26, but didn't get the letter until January 2 and luckily after trying to get a hold of a customer service person at USCIS (I had to go through an option to change mailing address because I found no other way to reach a live person on the phone) I found out that they rescheduled it to Jan 9 because the offices were closed on December 26 - (I had already got a letter for Jan9 about 2 weeks before this). When I told them this that if they reschedule that I may not get the letter until a week after their response was "well we can't help the post office". So I have no choice but to keep the original date and now I will have to miss a whole day of work because they schedule me right in the middle of the day.

So for anyone who is thinking about going to their appointment early, save yourself the trouble and don't do it. It may just be at the office I am at. I was at the office in Cranston, RI. The staff there is really rude and they will not see you even an hour before the scheduled date and time.

  8. I received my letter for the biometrics appointment a few days ago. My appointment is on January 9 at noon. This is a Friday and unfortunately I work from 9-4 on Fridays. Can I go to the place a few days earlier on my day off, or does it have to be on the date listed? Also does it have to be at time listed too? I would rather get it done early then waiting for the place to fill up at noon.

  9. I am about to send in my papers for AOS. Everything is done except I don't have a letter from my employer saying my income will continue from my job.

My boss is in the hospital and I don't know when he will get out so that is why it hasn't been done.

My husband who is the sponsor has made more than 125% of the poverty line for the last 2 years(he started that job mid of 2005 so he made less in 2005). I was wondering if I really need the letter from my employer or if my paper work is okay as it is right now.

I really don't want to wait any longer to send it off.

Do you think that they will reject it if I don't include a letter saying my income will continue even though my husband is making more than the cutoff?

  10. My husband doesn't have his tax records from 2006 and 2005 so I filed the form 4506-T to get a transcript of his records weeks ago. It says on the form that it takes 10 days, well it has been at least 3-4 weeks and I still have not received them. Does anybody know how long it will be to arrive? I can't send in my paperwork for adjustment of status without it and it is really pissing me off. If I would have known about this I would have ordered it months ago. And to think I ordered my long form birth certificate back in the winter so I wouldn't have to wait and that only took 1 week to arrive.

  11. Thanks for the replies. I did print out all the forms blank, so I guess I'll go back and fill out G325A on the computer instead.

Also I read that my husband who is the sponsor has to fill out all 4 pages, I don't understand how since all the questions ask about the applicant only.

I don't have an alien registration #, do I just leave that blank?

Also I don't have any red ink on my TN card. On the bottom it has 8 numbers then US-VISIT this is all in black ink. Is the 8 digit number the visa number?

  12. Sorry I posted this on the other forum before I saw this one.

I have been in the US since June 06 with a TN visa. The last time I renewed my visa was April 29. On September 13, I married my boyfriend (a US citizen) and I am trying to file all the paperwork for adjustment of status and have some questions I was wondering if someone who went through it before can answer.

    1) On form I-130 #22 what office do I put? Do I put in the local office for my area which would be Boston or do I put where the papers are being sent which is Chicago?

    2) I take it only I fill out form G-325A? There was 4 copies when I printed it out. Do I just fill out one page or all 4?

3)On form I-485 it asks for nonimmigrant visa number. What is this?

    4) On part C it asks to list organizations you have been a member of. I have been a member of a professional organization a few years ago - do they want me to put this? I can't see why they would need this.

    5) I filed out the advance parol form just in case I need to go to Canada. It asked for a travel date and length of time, what do I put here? I don't have a travel date, just would like the paper work incase I need to travel.

Also how long does this take?
