  1. Not sure why you want to get US citizenship and then move to Canada. The tax thing is a lot more hassle than you might think. Unless of course you don't need to work in Canada. Canadian income taxes are proportionally more than double what they are in the US. I know as I work in Canada and live in the US ( border town). Any RRSP's or other investments over $10000 have to be disclosed to the US. Canadian mutual funds have horrendous management fees, I know. I finally scuttled all my RRSP's and bit the bullet and transferred them into Roth IRA's. Got lucky with a 2% exchange rate.

People talk about the cheap health care in Canada, well I have news for you, what do you think the high income taxes are for? Fraser Institute says Canada health care for a family of 4 is over $1000 per month. And its about 20th spot in the G40 for quaity/value. Just my 2 cents worth.

  2. I couldn't find much on this question when I searched it.

Question 25 on DS-230 part 1 asks for dates of all previous visits to the US. So do I or can I attach a list as it is going to be a long one, like just about every weekend for the last 2 years and every 2nd or 3rd weekend for 2 years before that. Or could I say "numerous overnite visits to see my fiance and now wife in Bellingham WA since we met in 2004 and periodic one day shopping trips before that". I live in a border town situation. What is it that they are looking for exactly?

    Thanks VJers

  3. So, I get the impression that IR-1/CR-1 interviews are only done in Montreal, Is that correct? If so, it's too bad, as I live one hour from Vancouver consulate. Since both 130 and 129 are approved, I now face the choice of IR1/CR1 verses K3, as It appears that neither of my daughters (17 and 20) want to move down with me to US. The GC and SSN immediately are certainly appealing, but not necessary, as I will continue to work in Canada (bordertown). So I save approx. 670 dollars in costs to US govt and spend it on airfare and hotel to Mntrl, plus I miss 2 days pay, another $350. Is that a fair comparison?

The bottom line, if I DON'T need the GC right away, I am probably $$ ahead to go with the K3, Right?

What are your thoughts fellow VJers?

    Thanks again.

  5. We are at the point of sending in my I-129F for myself. In the cover letter, do I have to specifically request derivitive K4 visas for my 2 children, in addition to the K3 for myself, or does it go with out saying, since they are both teens? If I don't ask, will they assume that I don't want K4 visas for them? Their specifics have been listed on all forms where applicable. Thanking you in advance.

Perhaps I should qualify this a bit. My wife(usc) has sent in the I130, we have received our NOA1, and now are going to send in the I129F for K3 & K4 visas. We want to send the I129F in today, so the cover letter will read "K3 visa for (beneficiary) and derivitive K4 visas his children (name) and (name)"

They are both teenagers. In reality, the older one will probably not want to move to US, but the younger one will. I just want to keep the process open for both as long as possible. Thanks in advance.

  7. My usc wife tells me that we got our I130 NOA1 in the mail today. And it lists an address in CA, so I guess that is where our file is to be processed? Yahoo!!!!! I am going to see her tomorrow, as she lives just across the border from me about 50 minute drive. So far the customs officers haven't given me any hassle when I tell them I am going to see my wife in Bellingham for the weekend. I mention my ring binder evidence of ties and equities, and that seems satisfactory to them that I am returning to Canada.

What I would like to know is on the cover letter for I129F, where it says "Enclosed please find....K3 Visa for (beneficiary name)", would I then put "and derivative K4 Visas for his children (name) and (name)? Or something to that effect? Or does that go without saying as the childrens names are listed on all the other forms where ever it is called for. Thank you so much for this fabulous resource, VJers.

  8. Hi Y'all

If I apply for CR1 for myself and 17yo, as opposed to K3/K4, and the interviews will be in Montreal, what are the odds of both of us being interviewed at the same time, or same day?

As opposed to having to travel from west coast to MTL twice, once for me and again for my childs interview.

Also, is there a significant wait for interviews in MTL?

    Thanks VJers

  9. If going CR-1 you file 2 I-130s one for parent, one for child. If going K-Visa you can defer filing the I-130 for child until AOS.

Note CR-Visas have the advantage of Green-cards on entry NO waiting for EAD or AOS, also CR-Visas cost less.

Yes, I understand that. At some point I130's need to be filed for both, whether CR1 or K3/K4. The green card and no AOS is really appealing to me.

Sounds like the AOS is a more trying process than the CR1 or K3.

The AOS fees for both of us are twice as much then obviously?

My biggest concern is having to go to Montreal twice, that would really bite. Any thoughts on that, from any other VJ members?

  10. I live on the west coast. I understand that CR1 interviews are only done in Montreal. Would it be reasonable to expect that my 17 yo child would be interviewed with me or would I quite possibly have to go to Montreal twice? :crying:

Secondly, the costs have been compared between K3 vs CR1 but how do they compare for 2 people, myself and my 17 yo?

I don't find a lot of information regarding older teenage children and all the hoops that need to be jumped through.

I am assuming that I have to file an I130 for 17 yo along with AOS if I go K4?

Thanks in advance. VJ rocks.
